  • The experiments were undertaken to investigate the dynamics of $NO_3\;^-$ uptake at low temperature with forage rape(Bmssica napus), barle(Hordeum vulgare) and winter rye (Scale cereale). A net $NO_3\;^-$uptake and the contents of nitrogenous compound in tissues at low temperature ($5^{\circ}C$) were compared with normal temperature ($25^{\circ}C$).The net uptake of $NO_3\;^-$ by Brass ica nqus was the highest among three species at both temperature applied. During 9 hours after temperature treatment, $NO_3\;^-$ uptake of Brassica napus, Hordeum vulgm and Scale c e d e grown at $5^{\circ}C$ decreased to about 31, 50 and 27% compared with those grown at $25^{\circ}C$. $NO_3\;^-$ contents in roots were much sensitively affected by low temperature than those of leaves. Comparing with the plants grown at $25^{\circ}C$, $NO_3\;^-$ contents in roots of increased to 48.3, 38.7 and 53.5% repectively, for Brassica napus, Hordeum vulgare and Scale cereale during 9 days. A relatively less changes in the content of $NH_4\;^+$-N were observed according to the temperature treatment. The ontents of amino acids-N in leaves at $5^{\circ}C$ slightly decreased while that of roods remarkably increased compared with $25^{\circ}C$. Protein-N was the largest pool of nitrogen and its contents in leaves and roots showed a similar response on the temperature treatment. These results suggested that $NO_3\;^-$uptake was inhibited at low temperature. The dynamics of $NO_3\;^-$ uptake could be closely related to the increased concentration of $NO_3\;^-$ and amino acids in roots.

  • This experiment was conducted to breed a very early maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan 2015-2017. The new variety of Italian ryegrass, 'Green call 2ho' is a diploid variety with green in leaf color and has semi-erect growth habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring, 'Green call 2ho' was in heading date as a early-maturing variety April 24. Also 'Green call 2ho' was narrower by 2 mm in flag leaf width, longer by 2.5 cm in flag leaf length and shorter by 3 cm in plant height than those of the control variety, 'Florida 80', respectively. 'Green call 2ho' was also thicker by 0.33 mm in stem thickness and strong in winter hardness. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,688 kg/ha) of 'Green call 2ho' was 7% higher than that of 'Florida 80'. Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of 'Green call 2ho' were 61.3 %, 9.8 % and 98.2, respectively which are 2.6, 0.6, and 8.4 % higher, respectively than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green call 2ho' were 34.9 and 58.5 % which are 3.3 and 2.7 % lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.

  • This study was to assess the effect of sowing mixed legume forage and applying cattle manure on the productivity and feed value of whole-crop barley (WCB) as a representative of winter crops and to estimate feeding capacity of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) per unit area by defining optimal application level of cattle manure for more fertile soil and manure recycling for the purpose of reduced environmental pollution and efficient production of organic forage contributable to production of organic animal products. Sowing mixed legume forage significantly (p<0.05) increased yields of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) for WCB compared to WCB alone sowing, but there was no difference between mixed sowing treatments. The yields of DM, CP and TDN were significantly (p<0.05) highest in 100~150 kg N/hg. The CP and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were highest in mixed sowing with hairy vetch, followed by sowing mixed forage pea and WCB alone (p<0.05). There were no differences in CP and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents among cattle manure application levels. As nitrogen application level increased, ADF content increased (p<0.05), but TDN content decreased (p<0.05). Feeding capacity of organic Hanwoo (head/ha) weighing 450 kg of body weight with 400 g of daily gain significantly (p<0.05) increased due to mixed sowing with legume forage, and with increasing application levels of fermented cattle manure, feeding capacity significantly (p<0.05) increased. The results indicate that mixed-sowing of WCB and legume forage not only cut nitrogen application level of fermented cattle manure by over 50 kg per ha but also increased their feed value and productivity, and feeding capacity. This would be contributable to diversity of forage resources as well as production of organic animal product by creating low cost and high quality of forage.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid manure source, application rate and time on the agronomic characteristics and forage yield of winter rye. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design. The treatments were : CFB150=chemical fertilizer(CF) 150 N as basal, CFS150=CF 150 N as split application (75+75), SLB150=swine liquid (SL) 150 N as basal, SLS150=SL 150 N as split application (75+75), SLB300=SL 300 N as basal, SLS150=SL 300 N as split application(150+150), CLB150=cattle liquid (CL) 150 N as basal, CLS150=CL 150 N as split awlication(75+75), CLB300=CL 300 N as basal, CLS150=CL 300 N as split application(150+150). Heading date of the plant was observed on the 17th of April fur both chemical fertilizer and swine liquid, and on the 16th of April for cattle liquid. Stay green of chemical fertilizer was higher than others because of high crude protein content. Leaf was darker in high nitrogen fertilizer treatments than low N treatments. However lodging resistance was poor as nitrogen fertilizer was increased. Dry matter (DM) content of rye at chemical fertilizer was lower than liquid manure. DM yield of chemical fertilizer treatments were highest among the fertilizer source. However, DM yield of rye with application was all most same at different N application methods. The crude protein (CP) content and yield for chemical fertilizer was significantly higher than liquid manure. CP yield using split application was higher by 16% and 28%, compared to basal application. Based on the results of this study, forage production of liquid manure was lower, compared to chemical fertilizer. And split application was superior to basal application forage and protein yields, and high protein.

  • This study was conducted to establish spring sowing techniques in preparation for the impacts of climate change on sowing time and wintering rates of winter forage crops such as barley, oat and IRG. Oat showed the highest yield in 2017 which had relatively dry climate condition. And when sowing in late Febrnary 2017 yielding 9,408kg/ha were obtained, yielding 4,011kg/ha more than IRG's sown in the same period. In 2018 which had relatively wet climate condition, four barley species decreased in the production from the previous year. Oat also had decreased by 70% from 9,408kg/ha to 2,851kg/ha. On the other hand, IRG maintained the production in the mid-5,000kg/ha range. It was also found that IRG had the least variability due to external influences regardless of seeding period for 2 years. Mixed sowing with IRG and oat in 50:50 ratio was the highest dry matter, 6,584kg/ha, and IRG was 18.5% and Oat was 2.3 times higher than single planting.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding date and fall harvest method on the growth characteristics, forage yield and quality of winter rye(Seca1e cereale L.) at the forage experimental field, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, SNU, Suweon from 5 September 1992 to 21 May 1993. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Main plots consisted of three harvests, no defoliation, cutting and grazing. Sub-plots consisted of seeding dates, early(5 September), mid(25 September) and late(l0 October). The results obtained are summari7d as follows; I . A 3-day difference in the first heading of rye was observed between no defoliation and fall grazing, while there was a 6day difference between early and late seeding dates. Therefore, the effect of seeding dates on the fist heading date of rye was larger than that of fall harvest methods. 2. CP content of rye with fall grazing was slightly higher averaged 16.5% compared with both fall cutting and no defoliated 1ye(15.6%). Mean CP content of rye at the early, mid and late seeding dates was 14.2, 14.5 and 19.1 %, respectively. 3. ADF content of rye was slightly higher with both fall cutting(29.99) and no defoliation(29.5%) than that of fall grazing(28.0%). ADF content of rye at the early, mid and late seeding dates was 30.7, 29.1 and 27.7%, respectively. Effect of fall harvest methods and seeding dates on NDF content of rye were similar to the observations made on ADF. 4. RFV and IVDMD of rye were lower with both no defoliation and fall cutting than fall grazing. but those of rye slightly increased with seeding dates progressed. 5. Dry matter yield of rye was the highest of 6,779 kg/ha with fall cutting, while the lowest yield of 6,240 kg/ha was obtained from no defoliation But no significant difference was found among the harvest methods. Dry matter yield of rye was significantly declined with later seedings. It is concluded that the highest forage yield of rye be possible from two harvest systems of fall and spring with earlier seeding rather than from one harvest system of spring.

  • Whole Crop Barley (WCB) is a representative self-sufficient winter annual forage crop, along with Italian Ryegrass (IRG), in Korea. In this study, we examined the path relationship between WCB yield and climate factors such as temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration using a structural equation model. A Bayesian approach was considered to overcome the limitations of the small WCB sample size. As prior distribution of parameters in Bayesian method, standard normal distribution, the posterior result of structural equation model for WCB, and the posterior result of structural equation model for IRG (which is the most popular winter crop) were used. Also, Heywood case correction in prior distribution was considered to obtain the posterior distribution of parameters; in addition, the best prior to fit the characteristics of winter crops was identified. In our analysis, we found that the best prior was set by using the results of a structural equation model to IRG with Heywood case correction. This result can provide an alternative for research on forage crops that have hard to collect sample data.

  • A field experiment was conducted to evaluate agronomic characteristics, forage quality and dry matter yield of Korean native wild hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth) and introduced vetch(Vicia) cultivars from Australia. Seeds were sown on 29 August 1998 and 29 September 1999 at the Livestock Experiment Farm, Keimyung College, Kyeongsan, Kyeongbuk. Vetch plants were harvested on 14 November 1998 and 5 May 1999 and 29 April 2000. 'Haymaker plus' and 'Cappelo woolly pod' (Vicia villosa ssp. dasycarpa(Ten.) Eav.) were higher than 'Namoi' (Vicia villosa ssp. dasycarpa(Ten.) Eav.) in winter survival and 'Popany' (Vicia benghalensis L.) and 'Victa' (Vicia sativa L.) did not overwinter from 1998 to 1999. 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo woolly pod', 'Namoi', Korean native wild hairy vetch and Chinese milk vetch were overwintered from 1999 to 2000, except 'Aneto common' (Vicia sativa L.). Fifty percent flowering was observed 23 April for 'Namoi', 24 April for 'Cappelo woolly pod' and 26 April for 'Haymaker plus' from 1998 to 1999. In 1999~2000, fifty percent flowering was observed 12 April for 'Namoi' and 'Cappelo woolly pod', 14 April for 'Haymaker plus', 23 April for Chinese milk, 30 April for 'Aneto common' and Korean native wild hairy vetch. Dry matter yield per hectare was significantly higher(p<0.05) for 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo' and 'Namoi' than 'Popany' and 'Vicata' from 1998 to 1999. In 1999-2000, dry matter yield per hectare was higher(p<0.05) for 'Namoi', 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo woolly pod' and Korean native wild hairy vetch than Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) and 'Aneto common'. CP content was relatively high, but Chinese milk vetch and 'Aneto common' were lower than other cultivars. ADF(acid deterguent fiber) was low in Chinese milk vetch, but between the other cultivars were similar. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that 'Haymaker plus' would be recommendable for fall sown vetch for dry matter production.

  • Annual legume is being used as an important source of protein for farm animals and an ingredient for nitrogen fertilizers. There are, however, difficulties in selecting appropriate cultivar and forage management technique. The objective of this study is to select the best performing cultivars and evaluate a forage value on annual legume at two locations (Suwon and Sunghwan) for 1 year (1999${\sim}$2000). All cultivars shown a seedling vigor and lodging resistance of 8 rating or higher. Crimson and rose clover showed that they are appropriate for overwintering, but ;Laser; (35.9%) and 'Nitro'(9.1%) of persian clover variety did not overwinter well from 1999 to 2000. Flower stage was observed 4th of May for 'Tibbee', 6th of May for 'Contea' crimson clover, and 29th of April for 'Bolta balansa' rose clover. DM yield of a crimson clover 'Contea' (4,218kg/ha) was the highest among the legume forage. A crimson clover 'Tibbee' and rose clover 'Bolta balansa' also had a high production yield (3,874 and 3,828kg/ha). Calculations of relative feed value (RFV) based on the acid and neutral detergent fiber (ADF and NDF) of annual legume were over 125, which means that quality was high. According to the results of this study, crimson and rose clovers are recommended due to their high winter survival rate and high DM yield. Persian clover is not recommended because of a low overwintering rate at the Central region in Korea.

  • In the 20th century, the average temperature of Korea has risen by $1.5^{\circ}C$, whereas it has risen by $0.6^{\circ}C$ globally. Few studies have investigated the effect of seeding date in hilly pastures on their growth characteristics and productivity. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of seeding dates at a hilly pasture establishment on its growth characteristics and productivity caused by increasing temperatures in Korea. The experiments were conducted from 2014 to 2016 at Pyeongchang, South Korea, at an altitude 600-700 m above sea level. The composition of grass mixture was tall fescue, orchard grass, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, timothy, and white clover. Treatments comprised four seeding dates (August 13 and 27, and September 10 and 24). The establishment rate was lowest on September 24, resulting in only 20% establishment over the winter, and the proportion of weeds was highest on September 24 (58%). Early seedling growth before overwintering is a critical approach to ensure successful establishment of grassland. The main components were orchard grass and tall fescue on the early seeding date (August 13), and Kentucky bluegrass on the late seeding date (September 24). Late seeding increased the proportion of bare lands invaded by weed species, especially during second and third cutting periods. Early seeding date resulted in a progressive increase in biomass. Total annual production was significantly affected by the seeding date; lowest dry matter production was on September 24 ($2,441kg\;ha^{-1}$), whereas maximum dry matter yield was on August 27 ($6,608kg\;ha^{-1}$). The results of the study indicate that growth condition and productivity could be increased by early seeding, and seeding of grass in the Pyeongchang area should be completed before August 27. However, further studies are needed to determine the ideal seeding date at the hilly pasture establishment in Pyeongchang.
