  • The 3mm transitions to CO, $^{13}CO,\;CS,\;HCO^+$, and HCN have been observed toward the compact HII regions in W58 using the 14m Daeduk Radio Telescope (DRT). Some of the observed lines show high-velocity wings resulted from outflowing materials of the compact HII regions. We derive the beam averaged column densities of the observed species and compare their relative abundances. The $HCO^+$ abundance appears to be smaller by about an order of magnitude than those of 'typical' quiet molecular clouds. CS may be a good reference molecule in comparing relative abundances in different physical conditions.

  • We report a zygaenid moth, Inope heterogyna Staudinger for the first time from Korea. This species which shows the dark brown wings without medial lines and markings, is externally indistinguishable from Inope maerens and the correct identification can be done by the genitalia examination. The female genitalia of Inope heterogyna can be distinguished by the relatively short and strongly coiled at the anterior ductus bursae.

  • The Power Augmented Ram(PAR) effect, which blows the down stream of the propellers into the underside of the wings and hence increases the pressure between the lower surface of the wings and the sea surface, is known significantly to enhance the performance of the WIG concept by reducing the take-off and landing speeds. The aerodynamic characteristics of a 20 passenger PARWIG are investigated by wind tunnel tests with the 1/20 scale model. The efflux of the forward mounted propellers are simulated by jet flows with a blower and duct system. The lift, drag, and pitch moment of the model with various ground clearances, angles of attack and flap angles are measured for the various jet velocities, jet nozzle angles, horizontal and vertical positions of the nozzle, and the nozzle diameters. The aerodynamic characteristics of the PARWIG due to these parametric changes are compared and pertinent discussions are included. It is shown that the proper use of the PAR can increase the lift coefficient of as much as up to 4.

  • Aeroelastic analysis of an aircraft with a high aspect ratio wing for medium altitude and long endurance capability was attempted in this paper. In order to achieve such an objective, various structural models were adopted. The traditional approach has been based on a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The structural analysis results of the present beam model were compared with those by the three-dimensional NASTRAN finite element model. In it, a taper ratio of 0.5 was applied; it was comprised of 21 ribs and 3 spars, and included two control surfaces. The relevant unsteady aerodynamic forces were obtained by using ZAERO, which is based on the doublet lattice method that considers flow compressibility. To obtain the unsteady aerodynamic force, the structural mode shapes and natural frequencies were transferred to ZAERO. Two types of unsteady aerodynamic forces were considered. The first was the unsteady aerodynamic forces which were based on the one-dimensional beam shape; the other was based on the three-dimensional FEM model shape. These two types of aerodynamic forces were compared, and applied to the foregoing flutter analysis. The ultimate goal of the present research is to analyze the possible interaction between the rigid-body degrees of freedom and the aeroelastic modes. This will be achieved after the development of a reliable nonlinear beam formulation that would validate the current results as well as enable a thorough investigation of the nonlinearity. Moreover, such analysis will allow for an examination of the above-mentioned interaction between the flight dynamics and aeroelastic modes with the inclusion of the rigid body degrees of freedom.

  • We examined the community structure of fish off the coast of Jindo Island in response to a cold water appearance in the southwestern sea of Korea each August between 2013–2015. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 31 taxa during the study period, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. Collichthys lucidus and Neosalanx andersoni, which are mainly distributed in the western sea of Korea, increased in abundance and were dominant in August 2013, possibly due to the apparent intrusion of cold water (< 19°C) from offshore into the coastal waters of Jindo Island. Meanwhile, Scomberomorus niphonius and Sardinella zunasi, which are known as warmwater migratory species, increased in abundance and were dominant in August 2015, likely influenced by the warmer water (> 20°C) at the coast, which resulted in a noticeable lessening of the cold water in the study area. However, no significant differences were observed in fish community structure in the month of August between 2013–1015. This implies that the small-scale spatial and temporal variations in the cold water had limited effects on the fish community structure, even though the abundances of several dominant species varied in the coastal waters.

  • In this paper, the operational concept and the navigation algorithms for the gliding guided artillery munition are studied. The gliding guided artillery munition has wings for gliding; therefore spin of the munition should be eliminated. The previous navigation algorithms assumed a spinning munition with constant angular velocity; hence, they cannot be applied for the gliding munition. Moreover, lateral stability becomes worse due to decrease of angular momentum. Therefore, side force should be controlled to improve the stability, and the munition should maneuver, then the previous navigation algorithms for typical fixed-wing aircraft cannot be applied. In this paper, we apply the previous navigation algorithms for the spinning munition. Spin is eliminated and wings are deployed based on the estimation results, and the advanced navigation algorithm for the non-spinning munition is introduced.

  • To know whether there is any androconia on Korean Lycaenidae, studies were carried out with Korean Lycaenid butterflies for their types and distribution pattern with the aid of scanning electron microscope. As the results, androconia was observed from 8 species; Niphanda fusca (B. et G.), Pseudozizeeria maha (K.), Zizina otis (F.), Everes argiades (P.), Celasrtina argiolus (L.), Maculinea arionides (S.), M. teleius (B.) and Lycaeides argyronomon (B.). Androconia was not found only from males, and it was observed on both dorsal and ventral surfaces of fore wings and on ventral surface of hind wings. Androconia was found to be distributed mainly on the area between the median and anal venis. General structure of androconia on Korean Lycaenids was rather simple with laminar and foot stalk. However, 2 types of androconia were observed from 2 species, Pseudozizeeria maha and Everes argiades, while only one type was observed from other 6 species. The foot stalks of androconia on Niphanda fusca under the tribe Niphandini is located on the ventral surface of laminar and hidden from dorsal view, while one end of that on all other 7 species belong to the tribe Polyommatini is attached to the lower side of laminar and shown from both side.

  • New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4(3-fluoro-9-alkenyloxy) phenyl-iminomethylbenzoate]s and 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4-(3-fluoro-10-alkanyloxy) phenyliminomethyl benzoate]s were synthesized by varying the substituent (X=H, F, or Cl); their electrooptical properties are described. The smectic phases, including a switchable chiral smectic C ($SmC^{\ast}$) phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and triangular method. The presence of vinyl end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped molecules induced a decrease in melting temperature. The smectic phase having the undecenyloxy group such $as-(CH_2)_9CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelectric switching, and its value of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field was 2250 $nC/cm^2$, while the value of spontaneous polarization of the smectic phase having the decanyloxy group such as $-(CH2)_9CH_3$ was 3700 $nC/cm^2$. We could obtain the ferroelectric phase with low isotropic temperature by varying the end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules.

  • This paper analyzes actuator characteristics for main wing and tail surfaces of an ornithopter by using a motion capture test. Experiments with the ornithopter are conducted indoor, and its fuselage is held on a jig to reduce interaction with vibration generated by flapping motion. The motion capture system detects the movement of markers attached on the main wing and tail wing tip. Experimental results show that the main wings tend to change its amplitude according to the flapping frequency, and the lift and thrust generation simulation is implemented by applying the experimental results and the ornithopter specification to Modified Strip Theory. Step input excitation is applied for experimental analysis of the tail wing in horizontal and vertical directions. As a result, horizontal and vertical tail wings have different characteristics in terms of overshoot, final value, damping ratio and natural frequency because they have different wing structures and linkages.
