  • The objective of this paper is to propose a new technology of the orthopaedic surgery using the combination of reverse engineering (RE) based on CT data and rapid prototyping (RP). The proposed technology utilizes symmetrical characteristics of the human body and capability of the combination of RE and RP, which rapidly manufactures three-dimensional parts from CT data. The original .stl data of injured extents are generated from the mirror transformation of .stl file fur uninjured extents. The physical shape before injuring is manufactured from RP using the original .stl data. Subsequently, pre-operative planning, such as a selection of proper implants, preforming of the implant, a decision of fixation locations and an insert position for the implant, an estimation of the invasive size, and pre-education of operators are performed using the physical shape. In order to examine the applicability and the efficiency of the proposed surgical technology, various case studies, such as a distal tibia commented fracture, a proximal tibia plateau fracture and an iliac wing fracture of pelvis, are carried out. From the results of case studies, it has been shown that the proposed technology is an effective surgical tool of the orthopaedic surgery reducing the operational time, the operational cost, the radiation exposure of the patient and operators, and morbidity. In addition, the proposed technology could improve the accuracy of operation and the speed of rehabilitation.

  • In this paper, vibration characteristics in terms of the airfoil cross-sectional shape was examined by using the EDISON co-rotational plane beam-transient analysis. Co-Rotational plane beam analysis is appropriate for large rotation and small strain. Assuming aircraft wing as a cantilevered beam, natural frequencies of each airfoil cross-sectional shape were estimated using VABS program and fast Fourier transformation(FFT). VABS conducts finite element analysis on the cross-section including the detailed geometry and material distribution to estimate the beam sectional properties. Under the same airfoil geometric configuration and material selection, variation of material induced difference in the deflection and natural frequencies. It was observed that variation of the natural frequency was dependent on variation of the airfoil shape and material.

  • An opening efficiency experiment of anchovy boat seine has been carried out using a half size of the ordinary seine to reduce the size of the seine net and to improve the fishing efficiency from field operation. The intervals of towing boats were set at 100, 200 and 300m, and the towing speed, at 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2k't by possible combinations of them. The vertical openings of wing net, inside wing net, bagnet and flapper as well as the spreads of the seine net and the towing tension of the warp were measured, to find out efficient fishing gear and method of the anchovy boat seine. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The vertical opening of the inside wing net ranged from 8.7m to 12.0m at the normal current and from 7.0m to 10.0m at the counter current, and that of the wing net, from 8.4m to 19.8m at the normal current and from 4.9m to 16.3m at the counter current. The vertical opening of the wing net and inside wing net decreased as the towing speed and intervals of the boats increase, from 66% to 16% and from 32% to 18% of the normal opening, respectively. 2. The vertical opening of the fore of bag net ranged from 7.9m to 12.8m at the normal current and from 7.4m to 9.7m at the counter current, and that of the flapper, from 3.4m to 5.1m at the normal current and from 4.4m to 5.1m at the counter current, and that of the flapper, from 3.4m to 5.1m at the normal current and from 4.4m to 5.1m at the counter current. The vertical opening of the bag net was from 98% to 57% of the normal opening and the flapper showed a circular shape and it rose up to the upper layer with a slower towing speed. 3. The vertical opening of the end of the bag net ranged from 7.1m to 9.3m at the normal current and from 7.4m to 8.8m at the counter current. The end of the bag net rose up to the upper layer, This phenomenon was more apparent as the towing speed and the interval of the boats increase. 4. The towing tension of the experimental nets increased from 648kg to 2,716kg at the normal current and from 1,050kg to 6,010kg at the counter current with increasing towing speed. 5. The net depth of the anchovy seine was stable with the higher towing speed and the wider interval of the boats, but it was unstable by rising up to the upper layer with the lower towing speed and the narrower interval of towing boats.

  • A model experiment on the anchovy boat seine was carried out in the southern sea of korea to analyze the vertical opening and the underwater geometry. The model net A was made of half size in the length and width of the prototype net. The model net B was attached floats and chain to the model net-A. The vertical opening and the underwater geometry of the model net were determined by distance of Minilog position with the combinations of the distance between paired boats and the towing speed. The results obtained can be summarized as follows; 1. Vertical opening of the model net was gradually lowered according to the increase of the distance between paired beats and the towing speed. 2. Vertical opening of Wing net, In side wing net, Square, Fore bag net, Flapper and After bag net of the model net A according to the distance between paired boats were varied in the range of 10.8~9.0, 12.0~8.3, 12.6~9.0, 10.4~6.6, 4.6~5.2, 8.8~7.7m respectively, varied in the range of 36~30, 21~15, 31~22, 80~51, 80~96, 59~51% of the normal opening respectively 3. Vertical opening of Wing net, In side wing net, Square, Fore bag net, Flapper and After bag net of the model net B according to the distance between paired boats were varied in the range of 9.1~8.5, 9.8~6.5, 11.2~8.0, 11.0~8.1, 4.7~5.0, 7.0~7.5m respectively, varied in the range of 30~28, 18~12, 27~20, 85~62, 87~93, 47~50% of the normal opening respectively 4. Vertical opening of each a part of the model net according to the towing speed was as same as the former. 5. Model net was appeared apparent the pocket shape, because Wing net and Inside wing net was opened 30% of the normal opening. 6. The bosom and the bag net of the model net A were risen up to the upper lazer, this phenomenon was more apparent as the distance between paired boats and the towing speed increase, but the model net B was almost constant. 7. Working depth of the model net was gradually hallowed according to the increase of the distance between paired boats and the towing speed

  • This paper replaces an conventional 300-austenitic stainless steel sheet to a 400-ferritic stainless steel for the cost reduction of a pulsator cover of a washing machine. However, ferritic stainless steel has poor formability in comparison with austenitic one. The low formability of ferritic steel results in problems during stamping such as fracture, wrinkling, shape inaccuracy and so on. Design modification of the stamping tool is carried out with the aid of the finite element analysis for multi-stage stamping process. The simulation results show that fracture occurs on top of the product while wrinkles are generated by the excess metal near the wing part. Modification of the initial stamping die is performed to improve metal flow and to eliminate problems during the stamping process. Simulation with the modified design fully demonstrates that safe forming is possible without inferiorities.

  • A three-dimensional WIG (Wing In Ground effect) moving above free surface is numerically studied by means of finite difference techniques. The air flow field around the WIG is analyzed by MAC (Marker & Cell) method, and interactions between WIG and the free surface are appeared as the variation of pressure distribution acting on the free surface. To analyze the wavemaking phenomena by those pressure distributions, the NS (Navier-Stokes) solver is employed in which nonlinearities of the free surface conditions can be included. Through the numerical simulation, Cp values and lift/drag ratio are carefully reviewed by changing the height/chord ratio. The section shape of model is NACA0012 with the span/chord ratio of 3.0. Through computational results, it is confirmed that the effect of free surface is small enough to treat it as a rigid wavy wall.

  • A smart material is used as spectacle frames and brassiere frames, and partly in medical supplies because of its shape memory effect. The smart composite can be used on the wing of an airplane instead of the existing aluminium to control crack propagation. In this study, the smart composite was fabricated by a hot press method. TiNi alloy as reinforcement and A16061 as matrix were used, respectively. The mechanical properties of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles were evaluated. In addition, Acoustic Emission techniques were also used to clarify the damage behavior of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles nondestructive.

  • To evaluate the aerodynamic efficiency of TR-S4 configuration, wind tunnel tests of 40% scaled model were done in KARI LSWT. TR-S4 configuration has different nacelle shape, larger EO/IR camera and aftward wing location compared with TR-S2. Component build-up test after adding each element of model is performed. Also effects of horizontal tail incidences, Flaperon and Aileron deflection. on aerodynamic characteristics are measured. Test results showed that TR-S4 configuration has favorable stability characteristics in longitudinal, lateral and directional for the pitch and yaw motions.

  • There are different kinds of aircrafts, such as conventional airplane, rotorcraft, fighter, and unmanned aerial vehicle. Their shape and feature are dependent upon their assigned mission. One of the fundamental analyses during the design of the aircraft is the structural analysis. The structural analysis becomes more complicated and needs more computations because of the on-going complex aircrafts' structure. In order for efficiency in the structural analysis, a simplified approach, such as equivalent beam or plate model, is preferred. However, it is not clear which analysis will be appropriate to analyze the realistic configuration, i.e., an equivalent beam or plate analysis for an aircraft wing. It is necessary to assess the boundary between the one-dimensional beam analysis and the two-dimensional plate theory for an accurate structural analysis. Thus, in this paper, the static structural analysis results obtained by EDISON solvers were compared with the three-dimesional results obtained from MSC NASTRAN. Before that, EDISON program was verified by comparing the results with those from MSC NASTRAN program and analytic solution.
