  • Windows Vista published by Microsoft provides more powerful security mechanisms than previous Windows operating systems. In the forensics point of view, new security mechanisms make it more difficult to get data related to the criminals in a storage device. In this paper, we analyze BitLocker introduced as an new security mechanism in Windows Vista. Also, compared to the previous Windows operating systems, the changes and security issues of UAC and EFS in Windows Vista are discussed in the forensics point of view. Futhermore, we discuss other characteristics of Windows Vista useful for forensic examinations.

  • Live data in physical memory can be acquired by live forensics but not by harddisk file-system analysis. Therefore, in case of forensic investigation, live forensics is widely used these days. But, existing live forensic methods, that use command line tools in live system, have many weaknesses; for instance, it is not easy to re-analyze and results can be modified by malicious code. For these reasons, in this paper we explain the Windows kernel architecture and how to analyze physical memory dump files to complement weaknesses of traditional live forensics. And then, we design and implement the Physical Memory Dump Explorer, and prove the effectiveness of our tool through test results.

  • The process of tracking suspicious behavior manually on a system and gathering evidence are labor-intensive, variable, and experience-dependent. The system logs are the most important sources for evidences in this process. However, in the Microsoft Windows operating system, the action events are irregular and the log structure is difficult to audit. In this paper, we propose a model that overcomes these problems and efficiently analyzes Microsoft Windows logs. The proposed model extracts lists of both common and key events from the Microsoft Windows logs to determine detailed actions. In addition, we show an approach based on the proposed model applied to track illegal file access. The proposed approach employs three-step tracking templates using Elastic Stack as well as key-event, common-event lists and identify event lists, which enables visualization of the data for analysis. Using the three-step model, analysts can adjust the depth of their analysis.

  • There are three ways how to extract forensic evidence from mobile phone, such as SYN, JTAG, Revolving. However, it should be a different way to extract forensic evidence due to the differences of their usage and technology between them(mobile phone and smart phone). Therefore, in this paper, I will come up with extraction method that forensics evidence by search and seizure of a smart phone. This study aims to analyze specifications and O.S., backup analysis, evidence in smart to analyze for search and seizure of a smart phone commonly used google android and windows mobile smart phone. This study also aim to extract forensics evidence related to google android and phone book, SMS, photos, video of window mobile smart phone to make legal evidence and forensics report. It is expected that this study on smart phone forensics technology will contribute to developing mobile forensics technology.

  • Recently, as the amount of digital data rapidly increases, a large storage space is required. RAID is a system that can manage large capacity storage space. Storage space provided by Windows is a type of software RAID. Storage space has been supported since Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and no analysis has been done on the functionality. To analyze system using storage space, analysis of storage space function and reconstruction method of virtual disk should be studied. In this paper, we briefly describe the layout of existing RAID, explain the layout and metadata of storage space of software RAID, present reconstruction method of virtual disk by disk layout, and verify the result through experiments.

  • For an accurate analysis through the forensic of digital devices and computer, it is a very important validation of the reliability of digital forensic tools. To verify the reliability of the tool, it is necessary to research and development of the data set to be input to the tool. In many-used Windows operating system of the computer, there is a Window forensic artifacts associated with time and system behavior. In this paper, we developed a set of data in the Windows operating system to be able to analyze all of the two Windows artifacts and we conducted a test with published digital forensic tools. Therefore, the developed data set presents the use of the following method. First, artefacts education for growing ability can be analyzed acts standards. Secondly, the purpose of tool tests for verifying the reliability of digital forensics. Lastly, recyclability for new artifact analysis.

  • In this paper, a visualization digital forensics tool, called JumpList Analyzer, is implemented. The tool can analyze the complicated Jump Lists files, and then the results are demonstrated by visualization. To compare the proposed tool with the other Jump Lists tools, the proposed tool is the only one can display the analyzed results by visualization. The visualization will help the investigators more easily to find the evidence than the other tools showing the analyzed results by texts only. In the experiment, the proposed JumpList Analyzer is demonstrated its convenience at identifying artifacts for doing digital forensics in a financial fraud case. In addition, the proposed tool can also be used to reveal the computer user's behavior or background.

  • Since anti-forensics have been developed in order to avoid digital forensic investigation, the forensic methods for analyzing anti-forensic behaviors have been studied in various aspects. Among the factors for user activity analysis, "Iconcache.db" files, which have the icon information of applications, provides meaningful information for digital forensic investigation. This paper illustrates the features of IconCache.db files and suggests the countermeasures against anti-forensics utilizing them.

  • In this paper, we propose a new anti-forensic method for hiding data in the timestamp of a file in the Windows NTFS filesystem. The main idea of the proposed method is to utilize the 16 least significant bits of the 64 bits in the timestamps. The 64-bit timestamp format represents a number of 100-nanosecond intervals, which are small enough to appear in less than a second, and are not commonly displayed with full precision in the Windows Explorer window or the file browsers of forensic tools. This allows them to be manipulated for other purposes. Every file has $STANDARD_INFORMATION and $FILE_NAME attributes, and each attribute has four timestamps respectively, so we can use 16 bytes to hide data. Without any changes in an original timestamp of "year-month-day hour:min:sec" format, we intentionally put manipulated data into the 16 least significant bits, making the existence of the hidden data in the timestamps difficult to uncover or detect. We demonstrated the applicability and feasibility of the proposed method with a test case.
