  • Wind farm which are composed with wind turbine generators can be a good alternatives to solve environmental problem and solutions to cope with energy crisis for using wind energy. Until now, these wind turbine generators have been being studied on the viewpoint of only active power control for reducing the burden of main grid. In this control scheme, we might demand a reactive power compensator in order to make reparation for the reactive power produced from wind turbine generator itself. Therefore, if the reactive power as well as active power of wind turbine generator were controlled according to the demand of reactive power, the installation of a additional reactive power compensator could be reduced. This paper presents the control method of a active and reactive power for wind turbine generators by means of SVPWM(Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) inverting method and describes a operational coordination of wind turbine generators. The proposed power control algorithm can simply produce the output power of wind turbine generator needed in wind farm, which can reduce the power of main grid more and exclude a supplementary reactive power compensator. We assumed that wind farm are composed with two kinds of wind turbine generators, AC/DC/AC and induction generator types.

  • Renewable energy resources such as wind, wave, solar, micro hydro, tidal and biomass etc are becoming important stage by stage, considering the effect of environment. Wind energy is one of the most successful sources of renewable energy for the production of electrical energy. What's more, due to wind speed random variation the wind turbine generators can not make two-state model as conventional generators. The method of obtaining reliability evaluation indices of wind turbine generators is different from the conventional generators. This paper presents a study on the reliability evaluation of power system considering wind turbine generators with a simplified multi-state model.

  • This paper presents a study on reliability evaluation of a power system considering wind turbine generators (WTG) with multi-state. Renewable energy resources such as wind, wave, solar, micro hydro, tidal and biomass etc. are becoming importance stage by stage because of considering effect of the environment. Wind energy is one of the most successful sources of renewable energy for the production of electrical energy. But, reliability evaluation of generating system with wind energy resources is a complex process. While the wind turbine generators can not modelled as two-state model as like as conventional generators, they should be modelled as multi-state model due to wind speed random variation. The methodology for obtaining reliability evaluation index of wind turbine generators is different from it of the conventional generators. A method for making outage capacity probability table of WTG for reliability is proposed in this paper. The detail process is presented using case study of simple system.

  • Selecting optimal wind turbine generators for wind farm sites in the capacity factor point of view is performed in this study. A program to determine the best wind turbine generator for the maximum capacity factor for a site was developed. The program uses both the wind characteristics of the site of interest and the power curves of the wind turbines. The program developed was applied to find out optimal wind turbine generators of three different sites in complex terrain and successfully yielded the best site dependent wind turbine generators. It was also used to determine the best wind turbine generator of the wind farm currently operating in Korea and proved its usefulness. The program and methodology developed in this study considered to be very useful at the initial design stage of the wind farm to determine the best wind turbine generators for the site of interest.

  • In this paper, the method for effective stability analysis of Jeju power system in 2011 is proposed. The stability analysis of Jeju power system was carried out by using proposed method In case of Jeju power system with wind turbine generators or without wind turbine generators, including CSC HVDC or VSC HVDC. The steady-state stability is validated by SCR and ESCR, PV curve, QV curve. And the transient stability is analyzed by CCT(Critical Clearing Time). VSC HVDC has more advantages than CSV HVDC on the stability. Also, Jeju power system without wind turbine generators has more advantages than Jeju power system with Wind Turbine Generators on the stability.

  • This paper describes operational characteristics of wind turbine induction generators interconnected with distribution networks using PSCAD/EMTDC. Due to the simple and durable structure, induction generators are the most common type used in wind Power generation. Generally, induction generators are classified into two groups according to the shape of rotor, one is squirrel-cage type and the other is wound-rotor type. In this study, we simulate the start-up and the output variation of generators interconnected with distribution networks and compare the operational characteristics of squirrel -cage type and wound-rotor type induction generators located in the unfaulted distribution lines about the disturbance occurred on the associated distribution feeders emanated from the substation to which wind turbine generator is connected. In order to obtain the realistic results, we use the radial distribution network of IEEE 13-bus model.

  • In this paper, a simulation study on dynamic characteristics of wind turbine generators is performed. The generation of electricity using wind turbines is being recently spotlighted as a renewable way. The wind is an infinite primary energy source. Further, other environmental impacts of wind power are limited as well. Therefore, the wind turbine generation itself has many advantages. However, when generators using wind turbines are connected to the conventional power system, the impact of the power system is different from that of the power system that consists of only synchronous generators, especially in dynamic characteristics. Therefore, it is essential to examine the characteristics of wind turbines in order to ensure reliable wind turbine generation in the power system containing wind turbine generators. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of GE1.5MW wind turbine are simulated by using PSS/E. In the simulation of GE1.5MW wind turbine, wind speed variation, load change and voltage deviation of infinite bus are considered.

  • The development of wind turbine power generation has grown during the past ten years. An important question, when installing wind turbines with the generator connected directly to the grid, is holt much the voltage quality will be affected by the uneven power production and by the connection of the wind turbine to the grid. This paper presents the voltage fluctuation of grid-connected WTG(wind turbine generators) by MATLAB/Simulink.

  • This research has been performed to provide fundamental design aspects of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators(PMSGs) for a kilowatt class wind turbine. When it comes to kilowatt class wind turbines, the typical type of generators are Axial Flux Permanent Magnet(AFPM) generators. However, Radial Flux Permanent Magnet(RFPM) generators have been optimally designed to study the output characteristics of a kilowatt class wind turbine in Graduate School of Wind Energy, POSTECH. An existing squirrel-cage rotor has been modified for another newly designed permanent magnet rotor to utilize the commercially existing stator rotor. Electromagnetic analysis utilizing Finite Element Methods tools(ANSYS, MAXWELL 2D) has been applied to analyze the system.

  • This paper proposes a new methodology for evaluating the probabilistic reliability based grid expansion planning of composite power system including the Wind Turbine Generators. The proposed model includes capacity limitations and uncertainties of the generators and transmission lines. It proposes to handle the uncertainties of system elements (generators, lines, transformers and wind resources of WTG, etc.) by a Composite power system Equivalent Load Duration Curve (CMELDC)-based model considering wind turbine generators (WTG). The model is derived from a nodal equivalent load duration curve based on an effective nodal load model including WTGs. Several scenarios are used to choose the optimal solution among various scenarios featuring new candidate lines. The characteristics and effectiveness of this simulation model are illustrated by case study using Jeju power system in South Korea.
