  • The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the wind flow behind the livestock ventilation fan for small-scale wind power generation and to make flow profiles of imaginary ventilation fan for future simulation works. The field experiments using typical 50-inch fan indicated that the wind flow behind the ventilation fan had a good possibility of power generation with its high and steady wind speeds up to a distance of 2 m. The expected electricity yield was almost 101~369 W with a small (0.8 m radius) wind turbine. The decline of ventilation fan performance caused by the obstacle was also not significant with about 4 % from a distance of 2 m. The flow profiles for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was created by combining the direction vectors analyzed from tuft visualization test and the flow predicted by the rotating fan modeling. The flow profiles are expected to provide an efficient saving of computational time and cost to design a better wind turbine system in future works.

  • The $9 billion US global wind energy market is experiencing dramatic growth with installed generating capacity up 500% from 7,600 MW at the end of 1997 to nearly 39,300 MW at the end of 2003. With an average annual increase approaching 32%, wind is the world's fastest growing energy source on a percentage basis, and its growth is forecast to continue a double-digit pace into the next decade 1. While much of this growth is fueled by government decisions that are favorable to 'green' or renewable Power, it is also fueled by advances in wind turbine technology as evidenced by larger, more sophisticated machines. As a result, wind turbines are becoming more established as an economically viable alternative to fossil-fueled power generation. Today, wind 'farms' - consisting of anywhere from a single turbine to as many as several hundred turbines - are an important component of the world's source of electric energy.

  • A 30kW electrical power conversion system is developed for a variable speed wind turbine. In the wind energy conversion system(WECS) a synchronous generator with field current excitation converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the voltage and the frequency of the generator output vary according to the wind speed, a 6-bridge diode rectifier and a PWM boost chopper is utilized as an ac-dc converter maintaining the constant dc-link voltage with only single switch control. An input current control algorithm for maximum power generation during the variable speed operation is proposed without any usage of speed sensor. Grid connection type PWM inverter converts dc input power to ac output currents into the grid. The active power to the grid is controlled by q-axis current and the reactive power is controlled by d-axis current with appropriate decoupling. The phase angle of utility voltage is detected using software PLL(Phased Locked Loop) in d-q synchronous reference frame. Experimental results from the test of 30kW prototype wind turbine system show that the generator power can be controlled effectively during the variable speed operation without any speed sensor.

  • This paper describes method and procedure for DDT (Design Development Test) of composite wind turbine blade composites. The test type of DDT is bending test, such as cantilever beam, based on the rated wind speed of wind power generation system. DDT was carried out in order to compare with the result of FEM analysis, characterize structural stability, verify manufacturing process and review test method of full scale blade.

  • Wind is a significant and valuable renewable energy resource. It is safe and abundant and can make an important contribution to future clean, sustainable and diversified electricity supplies. Unlike other sources of energy, wind does not pollute the atmosphere nor create any hazardous waste. In some countries wind energy is already competitive with fossil and nuclear power even without accounting for the environmental benefits of wind power. The cost of electricity from conventional power stations does not usually take full account of its environmental impact (acid rain, oil slick clean up, the effects of climate change, etc). In this paper, a transient phenomenon simulation method for Wind Power Generation System(WPGS) under real weather conditions has been proposed. The simulation method is expected to be able to analyze easily under various conditions with considering the sort of wind turbine, the capacity of system and the converter system. Wind turbine connected to the synchronous generator and power converter was simulated.

  • We simulated the performance improvement of a wind turbine installed on the pitched roof-building(apartment in urban area, 50m height). A nozzle shape wind guide is added on the roof of a model apartment. The nozzle-diifuser structure effects for the free stream wind (average 4m/s, 50m height in Incheon) is studied by a basic CFD analysis. This paper examines the effects of roof structure on the wind velocity and the wind distortion effects by a front building. The possible wind power generation capacity on building roof in urban is calculated.

  • This paper proposes a probabilistic generation assessment model of renewable energy generators(REGs) considering uncertainty of resources, mainly focused on Wind Turbine Generator(WTG) and Solar Cell Generator(SCG) which are dispersed widely in South Korea The proposed numerical analysis method assesses the one day-ahead generation by combining equivalent generation characteristics function and probabilistic distribution function of wind speed(WS) and solar radiation(SR) resources. The equivalent generation functions(EGFs) of the wind and solar farms are established by grouping a lot of the farms appropriately centered on Weather Measurement Station(WMS). First, the EGFs are assessed by using regression analysis method based on typical least square method from the recorded actual generation data and historical resources(WS and SR). Second, the generation of the REGs is assessed by adding the one day-ahead resources forecast, announced by WMS, to the EGFs which are formulated as third order degree polynomials using the regression analysis. Third, a Renewable Energy Generation Assessment System(REGAS) including D/B of recorded actual generation data and historical resources is developed using the model and algorithm predicting one day-ahead power output of renewable energy generators.

  • In this paper, we present the estimation of wind turbine power generation using Cascade Architectures of Fuzzy Neural Networks(CAFNN). The proposed model uses the wind speed average, the standard deviation and the past output power as input data. The CAFNN identification process uses a 10-min average wind speed with its standard deviation. The method for rule-based fuzzy modeling uses Gaussian membership function. It has three fuzzy variables with three modifiable parameters. The CAFNN's configuration has three Logic Processors(LP) that are constructed cascade architecture and an effective optimization method uses two-level genetic algorithm. First, The CAFNN is trained with one-day average input variables. Once the CAFNN has been trained, test data are used without any update. The main advantage of using CAFNN is having simple structure of system with many input variables. Therefore, The proposed CAFNN technique is useful to predict the wind turbine(WT) power effectively and hence that information will be helpful to decide the control strategy for the WT system operation and application.

  • A real time simulation method for the stand-alone Wind Power Generation System (WPGS) based on the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is proposed in this paper for the simulations under the real weather conditions. The wind turbine characteristic equation of a wind turbine is reconstructed in the RTDS, and then the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the RTDS through the analogue input Ports of the RTDS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results show that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency and stability of the WPGS.

  • The exploitation of the resource wind energy is a rapidly growing area world-wide. The number of installed units is continuously increasing, and therefore, it is important to respect and to deal with the impact of wind power generation system. From the view of an electric grid utility, there is a major problem with the impact of the wind system on the voltage of the electric grid, to which a turbine in connected. The problem is rather common in the connection of a wind power system to an already existing grid, since the grid is very seldom designed for the transmission of additional power. In this paper, it is investigated the voltage impact of distribution line, to which wind power generation system is connected.
