This paper describes a modeling of fixed speed wind power generation system which comprise of wind turbine, generator and grid. The wind turbine is based on MOD-2, which is IEEE standard wind turbine, and includes a component using wind turbine characteristic equation. Fixed speed induction generator is directly connected to grid, so the variation of wind speed has effects on the electrical torque and electrical output power. Therefore the power control mode pitch control system is necessary for aerodynamic control of the blades. But the power control mode does not operate at the fault condition. So it is required some methods to control the rotor speed at transient state for stabilization of wind power system. In this paper, simulation model of a fixed speed wind power generation system based on the PSCAD/EMTDC is presented and implemented under the real weather conditions. Also, a new pitch control system is proposed to stabilize the wind power system at the fault condition. The validity of the stabilization method is demonstrated with the results produced through sets of simulation.
This paper analyzes the steady-state operating characteristics of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) and fixed-speed induction generator(FSIG) in wind turbine system. It also presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system for dynamics analysis on MATLAB/Simulink, and compares the responses between DFIG and FSIG wind turbine systems with respect to wind speed variation, 3-phase fault and 1-phase ground fault of the network. Simulation results show the variations of generator's active/reactive output, rotor speed, terminal voltage, fault current, etc. Case studies demonstrate that DFIG illustrates better performance compared to FSIG.
Speed sensorless modes of operation are becoming standard solution in the area of electric drives. This paper presents flux estimator and speed estimator for the speed sensorless vector control of induction motors. The proposed sensorless methods are based on the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) observer and adaptive speed observer (ASO). The proposed speed estimation algorithm can be employed in the power control of grid connected induction generator for wind power applications. Two proposed schemes are verified through computer simulation PSIM and compared their simulation results.
Wind tunnel test is one of the most important means to study the flutter performance of bridges, but there are blockage effects in flutter test due to the size limitation of the wind tunnel. On the other hand, the size of computational domain can be defined by users in the numerical simulation. This paper presents a study on blockage effects of a simplified box girder by computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the blockage effects on the aerodynamic characteristics and flutter performance of a long-span suspension bridge are studied. The results show that the aerodynamic coefficients and the absolute value of mean pressure coefficient increase with the increase of the blockage ratio. And the aerodynamic coefficients can be corrected by the mean wind speed in the plane of leading edge of model. At each angle of attack, the critical flutter wind speed decreases as the blockage ratio increases, but the difference is that bending-torsion coupled flutter and torsional flutter occur at lower and larger angles of attack respectively. Finally, the correction formula of critical wind speed at 0° angle of attack is given, which can provide reference for wind resistance design of streamlined box girders in practical engineering.
This paper proposed the wind turbine simulator for comparative study of the MPPT controls. The development of this wind turbine simulator is based on the torque controlled induction motor. The torque reference is obtained from a mathematical model of wind turbine whereas the inputs are rotor speed, wind speed and fixed-value of pitch angle. By using this wind turbine simulator, the real wind is not needed. Wind speed information can be stored and regenerated anytime. Hence it is possible to apply the same wind speed condition to different MPPT controls. With the same wind speed condition, it can fairly compare the advantages and disadvantages of the MPPT controls. The proposed wind turbine simulator is verified through PSIM simulation.
In this paper, a novel method for wind speed estimation in wind power generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on estimating the wind speed using Support-Vector-Machines for regression (SVR). The wind speed is estimated using the generator power-speed characteristics as a set of training vectors. SVR is trained off-line to predict a continuos-valued function between the system's inputs and wind speed value. The predicted off-line function as well as the instantaneous generator power and speed are then used to determine the unknown winds speed on-line. The simulation results show that SVR can define the corresponding wind speed rapidly and accurately to determine the optimum generator speed reference for maximum power point tracking.
The dynamic behavior of high speed train is very Important because the railway should be safe and Is satisfied tilth the rode comfort of passengers. The train is composed of many suspension components. such as 1st springs, 1st dampers, 2nd springs and 2nd dampers, that have an influence on the dynamic characteristics of high speed train. Also, the wheel/rail shapes, the track conditions and geometry and many environmental factors, such as rain, snow and wind. affect the dynamic behavior of high speed train. This paper reviews the effect of wind and track conditions on the dynamic behavior of high speed train. The VAMPIRE program Is used for this simulation. The result of simulation shows that the high speed train should not be operated when the wind velocity is beyond 34.5 m/sec.
Jangbogo station is located in Terra Nova Bay over the East Antarctica, which is often affected by individual storms moving along nearby storm tracks and a katabatic flow from the continental interior towards the coast. A numerical simulation for two strong wind events of maximum instantaneous wind speed ($41.17m\;s^{-1}$) and daily mean wind speed ($23.92m\;s^{-1}$) at Jangbogo station are conducted using the polar-optimized version of Weather Research and Forecasting model (Polar WRF). Verifying model results from 3 km grid resolution simulation against AWS observation at Jangbogo station, the case of maximum instantaneous wind speed is relatively simulated well with high skill in wind with a bias of $-3.3m\;s^{-1}$ and standard deviation of $5.4m\;s^{-1}$. The case of maximum daily mean wind speed showed comparatively lower accuracy for the simulation of wind speed with a bias of -7.0 m/s and standard deviation of $8.6m\;s^{-1}$. From the analysis, it is revealed that the each case has different origins for strong wind. The highest maximum instantaneous wind case is caused by the approach of the strong synoptic low pressure system moving toward Terra Nova Bay from North and the other daily wind maximum speed case is mainly caused by the katabatic flow from the interiors of Terra Nova Bay towards the coast. Our evaluation suggests that the Polar WRF can be used as a useful dynamic downscaling tool for the simulation and investigation of high wind events at Jangbogo station. However, additional efforts in utilizing the high resolution terrain is required to reduce the simulation error of high wind mainly caused by katabatic flow, which is received a lot of influence of the surrounding terrain.
As a result of increasing environmental concern, the penetration of renewable power on power systems is now increasing. Wind energy can be considered as the most economical energy sources to generate electricity without depletion of fossil fuel. To devise adequate control strategies for wind farms, time domain simulation analysis needs to be performed. This paper presents a time domain simulation method for wind farms with fixed speed wind turbines (FSWT) connected to the external power systems. In this paper, an example of time simulation of the wind farm with four FSWT.
The collection of wind speed time series by means of digital data loggers occurs in many domains, including civil engineering, environmental sciences and wind turbine technology. Since averaging intervals are often significantly larger than typical system time scales, the information lost has to be recovered in order to reconstruct the true dynamics of the system. In the present work we present a simple algorithm capable of generating a real-time wind speed time series from data logger records containing the average, maximum, and minimum values of the wind speed in a fixed interval, as well as the standard deviation. The signal is generated from a generalized random Fourier series. The spectrum can be matched to any desired theoretical or measured frequency distribution. Extreme values are specified through a postprocessing step based on the concept of constrained simulation. Applications of the algorithm to 10-min wind speed records logged at a test site at 60 m height above the ground show that the recorded 10-min values can be reproduced by the simulated time series to a high degree of accuracy.
