The Savonius wind turbine has a lower performance than other types of wind turbines which may attract more study focus on this turbine. This study aimed to improve wind turbine performance by combining a conventional blade with an elliptical blade into a combined blade rotor. The analysis was performed on three blade models in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS_Fluent Release 14.5. Then the results were verified experimentally using an open wind tunnel system. The results of the numerical simulation were similar to the experimental and showed that the combined blade rotor has better dragging flow and overlap flow than the conventional and elliptical blade. Experimental verification showed that the combined blade was to increase the maximum coefficient of power ($Cp_{max.}$) by 11% of the conventional blade and to 5.5% of the elliptical blade.
This paper presents a study of a DFIG wind power generation system for real-time simulations. For real-time simulations, the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and its user friendly interface simulation software RSCAD are used. A 2.2MW grid-connected variable speed DFIG wind power generation system is modeled and analyzed in this study. The stator-flux oriented vector control scheme is applied to the stator/rotor side converter control, and the back-to-back PWM converters are implemented for the decoupled control. The real-wind speed signal extracted by an anemometer is used for a realistic, reliable and accurate simulation analysis. Block diagrams, a mathematical presentation of the DFIG and a control scheme of the stator/rotor-side are introduced. Real-time simulation cases are carried out and analyzed for the validity of this work.

To ensure the frequency stability of wind power generation, we analyzedd the existing technology and proposedd a method for changing the gain value with respect to to the rotor speed by adding the MPPT reference value and output reference value that reflect the system frequency. The MPPT control and output were compared and calculated for performance verification. Subsequently, the application of the proposed algorithm led to an increased output when compared with that of the existing control method.

This paper presents the effect of a grid system on the performance of a small Savonius wind turbine installed side-by-side. Turbine performance is compared using three different grid systems; tetrahedral grid having a concentrated circular grid around turbine rotors, the tetrahedral grid having a concentrated rectangular grid around turbine rotors and the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid. The commercial code, SC/Tetra has been used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis in the present study. The Savonius turbine rotor has a rotational diameter of 0.226m and an aspect ratio of 1.0. The distance between neighboring rotor tips keeps the same length of the rotor diameter. The variations of pressure and power coefficient are compared with respect to blade rotational angles and rotating frequencies of the turbine blade. Throughout the comparisons of three grid systems, it is noted that the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid has a stable performance compared to the other ones.

In this research, a design guideline of current generating rotor and acceptable field rotor in offshore environment is proposed. To design rotor model, wind mill rotor design principles and turbine theories were applied based on a field rotor experimental data. To verify the compatibility of the rotor design method and to analyze the properties of design factors, 3 rotor models were designed and experimented in a circular water channel. Three rotor models were designed according to different blade numbers and blade shapes. With various flow velocities and rotor rpm, the rotor power and efficiency were measured and the properties of rotor were estimated. The results can be effectively applied to the design of current generation rotor.

This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics for the NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI rotor using the Fluent which is a commercial flow analysis tool. Aerodynamic analysis results are compared with experimental results by the NREL/NASA Ames wind tunnel tests. For three velocity cases, computed results are compared with experiment results at five spanwise positions. Computed results represented good agreement with the experimental results at low velocity. Otherwise computed results in suction side represents disagreement with the experimental results at high velocity. When interval between wind turbines is 10 times of rotor diameter, CFD research is performed to calculate the wake effect.

Double-blade vertical axis wind turbines (DB-VAWTs) can improve the self-starting performance of lift-driven VAWTs. We here propose the quadruple-multiple streamtube model (QMS), based on the blade element momentum (BEM) theory, for simulating DB-VAWT performance. Model validity is investigated by comparison to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prediction for two kinds of two-dimensional DB-VAWT rotors for two rotor scales with three inner-outer radius ratios: 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75. The BEM-QMS model does not consider the effects of an inner rotor on the flow speed in the upwind half of the rotor, so we introduce a correction factor for this flow speed. The maximum power coefficient predicted by the modified BEM-QMS model for a DB-VAWT is thus closer to the CFD prediction.
The insertion of the crowbar system in the doubly fed induction generator rotor circuit for a short period of time during grid disturbance enables a more efficient way of limiting transient rotor current and hence protecting the rotor side converter (RSC) and the DC - link capacitor. When crowbar is activated at fault occurrence and clearance time, RSC is blocked while DC -link capacitor and the grid side converter (GSC) can be controlled to provide reactive power support at the PCC and improve the voltage which helps to comply with grid codes. In this paper, control strategies for crowbar system to limit the rotor current during fault is presented with RSC and GSC controllers are modified to control PCC voltage during disturbance to enhance DFIG wind farm to comply with some strict grid codes. Model simulated on MATLAB/Simulink verify the study through simulation results presented.
For the purpose of verifying the calculation, the rotor blade shall be subjected to test for the natural frequencies and the static loading within the scope of the assessment. This paper presents a full scale static test procedure of the rotor blade for certification by GL. This blade model is manes as KM24 designed for IEC type IA. The test and calculation values are all most similar. Also there is not founded any marks of cracks or buckling at the shell, and bonding area is T/E, L/E and shear web. Therefore, the test is successful and the rotor blade is satisfied the safety requirement at the maximum design load.

Doubly-Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) is adequate to maximize the energy capture from wind energy, whereby the turbine speed can be adjusted to a speed, at which a rated tip speed ratio be kept. In this paper, a power analysis for DFIG and its characteristics of power flow in grid-connected operation, are dealt with in speed range of super- and sub-synchronous region. In a test of the machine, whereby a doubly excited circuit configuration in stator as well as rotor with back to back PWM inverter have been equipped, a constant input torque is given and in that condition, power new in stator and rotor circuit have been measured and compared with theoretical value. Furthermore, the power factor in stator and rotor circuit have been examined.
