The performance of wind profilers were evaluated in Bukgangneung and Changwon, where both wind profilers and radiosonde are being operated. From December 2019 to November 2020, the acquisition rate of wind speed data by altitude and month was investigated and compared with the wind speed of radiosonde. The acquisition rate of normal data increased at the minimal observable altitude, and then decreased again from 2 km or more at the two observation sites. The acquisition rate was high in summer (June, July, August), and low in winter (December, January, February). The results compared with radiosonde showed high correlation of 0.9 in the high mode and 0.8 in the low mode.
A set of microwave remote sensing data collected with the newly developed UMass Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) during the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane Season was analyzed to further our understanding of the effect of precipitation on scatterometer wind vector retrieval. Coincident surface wind speed and precipitation measurements were provided by the UMass Simultaneous Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR). The differences between the wind estimations from IWRAP and SFMR under precipitation conditions of 0-100mm/hr and wind speed of 0-60m/s was calculated, from which the effect of precipitation on the wind vector retrieval using scatterometry is analyzed qualitatively.

In this paper raw spectrum data were analyzed to suggest the moving forward of performance evaluation and quality control of wind profilers of four manufacturers operating in South Korea. For the analysis, the profile of the spectrum averaged by season and the profile of four statistical values (minimum, average, median, and maximum) calculated by Power Spectrum Density (PSD) were used. The quality of spectrum data was the best for LAP-3000, followed by YKJ3, PCL-1300, and CLC-11-H. In Cheorwon and Chupungnyeong, where PCL-1300 was installed, the variability of the spectrum due to ground clutter and non-meteorological signals was large, so ground clutter removal and signal processing such as moving average and multi-peak were required. In Gunsan and Paju, where CLC-11-H was installed, DC (Direct Current) bias and propagation folding were found, so it is necessary to remove the DC bias and limit the effective altitude for observation.

The speed and direction of the earth's fluid motion is measured by a remote sensing method using electromagnetic waves. Using UHF radar and GPS Sonde, the vertical profile of fluid velocity was calculated by the Euler measurement method and the Lagrange measurement method, respectively. Since the wind direction, which is the direction of motion of the atmosphere, is indicated in the direction of the wind blowing, and a circular value of 0° - 360° is used, it is necessary to pay attention to statistical analysis. Errors caused by calculation conditions are provided, and the corrected accuracy of comparison results is improved by 400%.
On 20 January 2017, the fresh snow cover which is more than 20 cm, accompaning with lightning occurred over Yeongdong coastal region for the first 3-hour of the heavy snowfall event. This study analyzed sounding observations in the heavy snow period which were including the measurements of wind profiler, radiometer and rawinsonde. The features examined from the vertical wind and temperature data at the two adjacent stations, Bukgangneung and Gangneung-Wonju National University, are summarized as follows: 1) The strong (30-40 kts) north-east winds were observed in the level from 2 to 6 km. The Strong atmospheric instability was found from 4 to 6 km, in which the lapse rate of temperature was about $-18^{\circ}C\;km^{-1}$. These features indicate that the deep convective cloud develops up to the height of 6 km in the heavy snowfall period, which is shown in the satellite infrared images. 2) The cooling was observed in the level below 1 km. At this time, the surface air temperature at Bukgangneung station decreased by $4^{\circ}C$. The narrow cooling zone estimated from AWS and buoy data was located in east-west direction. These are the features observed in the cold front of extratropical cyclone. The distributions of radar echo and lightning also show the same shape in east-west direction. Therefore, the results indicate that the Yeongdong thundersnow event was the combined precipitation system of deep convective cloud and cold frontal precipitation.

Wave measurements using X-band radar have many advantages compared to other wave gauges including wave-rider buoy, P-u-v gauge and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), etc.. For example, radar system has no risk of loss/damage in bad weather conditions, low maintenance cost, and provides spatial distribution of waves from deep to shallow water. This paper presents new methods for estimating significant wave heights of X-band marine radar images using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We compared the time series of estimated significant wave heights (Hs) using various estimation methods, such as signal-to-noise ratio (${\sqrt{SNR}}$), both and ${\sqrt{SNR}}$ the peak period (TP), and ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k). The estimated significant wave heights of the X-band images were compared with wave measurement using ADCP(AWC: Acoustic Wave and Current Profiler) at Hujeong Beach, Uljin, Korea. Estimation of Hs using ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k) yields best result.

This paper discusses the design of a ground clutter prevention fence for a radar wind profiler (RWP). The design point of the clutter fence is to improve the quality of the received signal by removing the non-weather clutter coming from the side. In this paper, a clutter prevention fence composed of a metallash mesh around the RWP is proposed, and the phase center of the antenna, the length, and height of the down fence, and the height and slop of the top fence through M&S are designed. The designed ground clutter prevention fence and 256 active phase array antennas were used as basic data. The effectiveness of the design was confirmed by a simulation. The side lobe in the ±90° direction was reduced by more than 30dB depending on the presence or absence of the designed ground clutter prevention fence. The fence was manufactured by 3D modeling, and the clutter shielding performance of approximately 20dB or more on the side of the antenna (±90°) was confirmed by applying it to the currently operated RWP.

The Soya Warm Current (SWC) is a coastal boundary current, which flows along the coast of Hokkaido in the Sea of Okhotsk. Seasonal and subinertial variations in the SWC are investigated using data obtained by high-frequency (HF) ocean radars, coastal tide gauges, and a bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The HF radars clearly capture the seasonal variations in the surface current fields of the SWC. The velocity of the SWC reaches its maximum, approximately 1 m/s, in the summer, and becomes weaker in the winter. The velocity core is located 20 to 30 km from the coast, and its width is approximately 50 km. The almost same seasonal cycle was repeated in the period from August 2003 to March 2007. In addition to the annual variation, the SWC exhibits subinertial variations with a period from 10-15 days. The surface transport by the SWC shows a significant correlation with the sea level difference between the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk for both of the seasonal and subinertial variations, indicating that the SWC is driven by the sea level difference between the two seas. Generation mechanism of the subinertial variation is discussed using wind data from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses. The subinertial variations in the SWC are significantly correlated with the meridional wind component over the region. The subinertial variations in the sea level difference and surface current delay from the meridional wind variations for one or two days. Continental shelf waves triggered by the meridional wind on the east coast of Sakhalin and west coast of Hokkaido are considered to be a possible generation mechanism for the subinertial variations in the SWC.
Analyses of observational data and numerical simulations were performed to understand the mechanism of MCSs (Mesoscale Convective Systems) occurred on 13-14 July 2004 over Jindo area of the Korean Peninsula. Observations indicated that synoptic environment was favorable for the occurrence of heavy rainfall. This heavy rainfall appeared to have been enhanced by convergence around the Changma front and synoptic scale lifting. From the analyses of storm environment using Haenam upper-air observation data, it was confirmed that strong convective instability was present around the Jindo area. Instability indices such as K-index, SSI-index showed favorable condition for strong convection. In addition, warm advection in the lower troposphere and cold advection in the middle troposphere were detected from wind profiler data. The size of storm, that produced heavy rainfall over Jindo area, was smaller than $50{\times}50km^2$ according to radar observation. The storm developed more than 10 km in height, but high reflectivity (rain rate 30 mm/hr) was limited under 6 km. It can be judged that convection cells, which form cloud clusters, occurred on the inflow area of the Changma front. In numerical simulation, high CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) was found in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula. However, heavy rainfall was restricted to the Jindo area with high CIN (Convective INhibition) and high CAPE. From the observations of vertical drop size distribution from MRR (Micro Rain Radar) and the analyses of numerically simulated hydrometeors such as graupel etc., it can be inferred that melted graupels enhanced collision and coalescence process of heavy precipitation systems.

Yeongdong has frequently suffered from severe snowstorms, which generally give rise to societal and economic damages to the region in winter. In order to understand its mechanism, there has been a long-term measurement campaign, based on the rawinsonde measurements for every snowfall event at Gangneung since 2014. The previous observations showed that a typical heavy snowfall is generally accompanied with northerly or northeasterly flow below the snow clouds, generated by cold air outbreak over the relatively warmer East Sea. An intensive and multi-institutional measurement campaign has been launched in 2019 mainly in collaboration with Gangwon Regional Office of Meteorology and National Institute of Meteorological Studies of Korean Meteorological Administration, with a special emphasis on winter snowfall and spring windstorm altogether. The experiment spanned largely from February to April with comprehensive measurements of frequent rawinsonde measurements at a super site (Gangneung) with continuous remote sensings of wind profiler, microwave radiometers and weather radar etc. Additional measurements were added to the campaign, such as aircraft dropsonde measurements and shipboard rawinsonde soundings. One of the fruitful outcomes is, so far, to identify a couple of cold air damming occurrences, featuring lowest temperature below 1 km, which hamper the convergence zone and snow clouds from penetrating inland, and eventually make it harder to forecast snowfall in terms of its location and timing. This kind of comprehensive observation campaign with continuous remote sensings and intensive additional measurement platforms should be conducted to understand various orographic precipitation in the complex terrain like Yeongdong.
