The importance of power system stability has been emphasized with an increase of wind energy penetration in the power system. Accordingly, the guarantee on various control capabilities, including active and reactive power control of wind farms, was regarded as the most important aspect for the connection to the grid. To control the wind farm active power, the wind farm controller was introduced. The wind farm controller decides the power set points for each wind turbine generating unit and each wind turbine generating unit controls its power according to the set points from the wind farm controller. Therefore, co-relationship between wind farm controller and wind turbine controllers are significantly important. This paper proposes some control methods of wind farm active power control based on modified wind turbine control for power system stability and structures to connect wind turbine controllers to wind farm controller. Besides, this paper contributes to development of control algorithm considering not only electrical components but also mechanical components. The proposed contributions were verified by full simulation including power electronics and turbulent wind speed. The scenario refers to the active power control regulations of the Eltra and Elkraft system in Denmark.
Because of the nature of wind, the output power of wind turbines fluctuates according to wind speed variation. Therefore, many countries have set up wind-turbine interconnection standards usually named as Grid-Code to regulate the output power of wind farms to improve power system reliability and power quality. This paper proposes three operation modes of wind farms such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode, single wind turbine control mode and wind farm control mode to control the output power of wind turbines as well as overall wind farms. This paper also proposes an operation scheme of wind farm to alleviate power fluctuation of wind farm by choosing the appropriate control mode and coordinating multiple wind turbines in consideration of grid conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified via simulation studies in PSCAD/EMTDC with doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine models.

The paper is focusing on investigating the control characteristics of the baseline controller of 5 MW wind turbine provided by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). The baseline controller consist of two control logics, a maximum power tracking control below the rated wind speed and a constant power control above the rated wind speed. In the low wind speed, the mean generator power for changing the turbulent intensity and the optimal constant is studied through numerical simulations using FAST program. On the other hand, the constant power control logic and the constant control logic are compared in the high wind speed. It is confirmed that optimal constant is closely related to the turbulent intensity in low wind speed region and the constant torque control has better performance than the constant power control with respect to mechanical load in high wind speed region.

This paper presents a pitch angle controller of a grid-connected wind turbine system for extracting maximum power from wind and implements a modeling and simulation of the wind turbine system on MATLAB/Simulink. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm for the wind turbine and presents, in a graphical form, the relationship of wind turbine output, rotor speed, and power coefficient with wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control algorithm. The objective of pitch angle control is to extract maximum power from wind and is achieved by regulating the blade pitch angle during above-rated wind speeds in order to bypass excessive energy in the wind. Case studies demonstrate that the pitch angle control is carried out to achieve maximum power extraction during above-rated wind speeds and effectiveness of the proposed controller would be satisfactory.

Recently wind energy penetration into power systems has increased. Wind power, as a renewable energy source, plays a different role in the power system compared to conventional power generation units. As long as only single and small wind power units are installed in the power system, wind power does not influence power system operation and can easily be integrated. However, when wind power penetration reaches a significantly high level and conventional power production units are substituted, the impact of wind power on the power system becomes noticeable and must be handled. The connection of large wind turbines and wind farms to the grid has a large impact on grid stability. The electrical power system becomes more vulnerable to and dependent on wind energy production, and therefore there is an increased concern about the large wind turbines impact on grid stability. In this work, a new type of fuzzy logic controller for the frequency control of wind farms is proposed and its performance is verified using SimWindFarm toolbox which was developed as part of the Aeolus FP7 project.
This paper addresses on a wind power system with BESS(Battery Energy Storage System). The concerned system consists of four parts: the wind speed production model, the wind turbine model, configure capacity of the battery energy storage, battery model and control of the BESS. First of all, we produce wind speed by 4-component composite wind speed model. Secondly, the maximum available wind power is determined by analyzing the produced wind speed and the characteristic curve of wind power. Thirdly, we configure capacity of the BESS according to wind speed and characteristic curve of wind speed-power. Then, we propose a control strategy to track the power reference. Finally, some simulations have been demonstrated to visualize the feasibility of the proposed methodology.
This paper proposes a novel strategy for attenuating the output power fluctuation of the wind farm (WF) in a range of tens of seconds delivered to the grid, where the kinetic energy caused by the large inertia of the wind turbine systems is utilized. A control scheme of the two-level structure is applied to control the wind farm, which consists of a supervisory control of the wind farm and individual wind turbine controls. The supervisory control generates the output power reference of the wind farm, which is filtered out from the available power extracted from the wind by a low-pass filter (LPF). A lead-lag compensator is used for compensating for the phase delay of the output power reference compared with the available power. By this control strategy, when the reference power is lower than the maximum available power, some of individual wind turbines are operated in the storing mode of the kinetic energy by increasing the turbine speeds. Then, these individual wind turbines release the kinetic power by reducing the turbine speed, when the power command is higher than the available power. In addition, the pitch angle control systems of the wind turbines are also employed to limit the turbine speed not higher than the limitation value during the storing mode of kinetic energy. For coordinating the de-rated operation of the WT and the storing or releasing modes of the kinetic energy, the output power fluctuations are reduced by about 20%. The PSCAD/EMTDC simulations have been carried out for a 10-MW wind farm equipped with the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to verify the validity of the proposed method.
Wind farm which are composed with wind turbine generators can be a good alternatives to solve environmental problem and solutions to cope with energy crisis for using wind energy. Until now, these wind turbine generators have been being studied on the viewpoint of only active power control for reducing the burden of main grid. In this control scheme, we might demand a reactive power compensator in order to make reparation for the reactive power produced from wind turbine generator itself. Therefore, if the reactive power as well as active power of wind turbine generator were controlled according to the demand of reactive power, the installation of a additional reactive power compensator could be reduced. This paper presents the control method of a active and reactive power for wind turbine generators by means of SVPWM(Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) inverting method and describes a operational coordination of wind turbine generators. The proposed power control algorithm can simply produce the output power of wind turbine generator needed in wind farm, which can reduce the power of main grid more and exclude a supplementary reactive power compensator. We assumed that wind farm are composed with two kinds of wind turbine generators, AC/DC/AC and induction generator types.
At the moment, the control ability of wind farms is a prime research concern for the grid integration of large wind farms, due to their required active role in the power system. As more wind turbines are installed, the power from wind energy will start to replace conventional generation units and its influence on power systems cannot be neglected. Besides, because of the intermittent nature of wind the output power of wind turbines fluctuates according to wind speed variation. Especially an isolated power system with small capacity such like Jeju needs more systematic solutions and regulations(grid code). This paper presents the idea of approach for centralized operating wind farm strategy to regulate the wind farm power production to the reference power ordered by the system operator. The doubly fed induction generator(DFIG) can control active and reactive power in feasible range. So wind farm comprised of DFIG has the possibility of a controllable component in the power system. The presented wind farm control has a hierarchical structure with both a wind farm control level and a wind turbine control level.

This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a PI controller for maximum power extraction of a grid-connected wind energy conversion system with a link of a rectifier and an inverter. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm fnr a wind turbine and proposes, in a graphical form, the relationships of wind turbine output, rotor speed, power coefficient, tip-speed ratio with wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control. The control objective is to always extract maximum power from wind and transfer the power to the utility by controlling both the Pitch angle of the wind turbine blades and the inverter firing angle. Pitch control method is mechanically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. The simulation results performed on MATLAB will show the variation of generator's rotor angle and rotor speed, pitch angle, and generator output.
