The straight-cone steel cooling tower is a novel type of structure, which has a distinct aerodynamic distribution on the internal surface of the tower cylinder compared with conventional hyperbolic concrete cooling towers. Especially in the extreme weather conditions of strong wind and heavy rain, heavy rain also has a direct impact on aerodynamic force on the internal surface and changes the turbulence effect of pulsating wind, but existing studies mainly focus on the impact effect brought by wind-driven rain to structure surface. In addition, for the indirect air cooled cooling tower, different additional ventilation rate of shutters produces a considerable interference to air movement inside the tower and also to the action mechanism of loads. To solve the problem, a straight-cone steel cooling towerstanding 189 m high and currently being constructed is taken as the research object in this study. The algorithm for two-way coupling between wind and rain is adopted. Simulation of wind field and raindrops is performed with continuous phase and discrete phase models, respectively, under the general principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Firstly, the rule of influence of 9 combinations of wind sped and rainfall intensity on flow field mechanism, the volume of wind-driven rain, additional action force of raindrops and equivalent internal pressure coefficient of the tower cylinder is analyzed. On this basis, the internal pressures of the cooling tower under the most unfavorable working condition are compared between four ventilation rates of shutters (0%, 15%, 30% and 100%). The results show that the 3D effect of equivalent internal pressure coefficient is the most significant when considering two-way coupling between wind and rain. Additional load imposed by raindrops on the internal surface of the tower accounts for an extremely small proportion of total wind load, the maximum being only 0.245%. This occurs under the combination of 20 m/s wind velocity and 200 mm/h rainfall intensity. Ventilation rate of shutters not only changes the air movement inside the tower, but also affects the accumulated amount and distribution of raindrops on the internal surface.
To better understand the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder, the distribution of aerodynamic force and the non-dimensional power spectral density (PSD) of fluctuating pressure on the side surface were studied in different VIV development stages, and their differences in the stationary state and vibration stages were analyzed. The spanwise and streamwise correlations of surface pressures were studied, and the flow field structure partitions on the side surface were defined based on the streamwise correlation analysis. The results show that the variation tendencies of mean and root mean square (RMS) pressure coefficients are similar in different VIV development stages. The RMS values during amplitude growth are larger than those at peak amplitude, and the smallest RMS values are observed in the stationary state. The spanwise correlation coefficients of aerodynamic lifts increase with increase of the peak amplitude. However, for the lock-in region, the maximum spanwise correlation coefficient for aerodynamic lifts occurs in the VIV rising stage rather than in the peak amplitude stage, probably due to the interaction of vortex shedding force (VSF) and self-excited force (SEF). The streamwise correlation results show that the demarcation point positions between the recirculation region and the main vortex region remain almost constant in different VIV development stages, and the reattachment points gradually move to the tailing edge with increasing amplitude. This study provides a reference to estimate the demarcation point and reattachment point positions through streamwise correlation and phase angle analysis from wind tunnel tests.
The present study focuses on aerodynamic parameters behaviors and control on the single and double side setback building models at the buildings mid-height. The study is conducted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. This study estimates the face wise pressure coefficient on single side setback buildings with a setback range of 20%-50% and double side setback buildings with setbacks ranging from 10%-25%. The polynomial fitted graphs from CFD data predict the Cp on different setback model faces within permissible limit ±13% error. The efficient model obtained according to the minimum drag, lift, and moment consideration for along and across wind conditions. The study guides the building tributary area doesn't control the drag, lift, and moment on setback type buildings. The setback distance takes a crucial role in that. The 20% double side setback model is highly efficient to regulate the moment for both along and across wind conditions. It reduces 17.5% compared to the 20% single side setback and 14% moment compared to the 10% double side setback models. The double side setback building is more efficient to control 4.2% moment than the single side setback building
Pressure measurements on static and autorotating flat plates have been recently reported by Lin et al. (2006), Holmes, et al. (2006), and Richards, et al. (2008), amongst others. In general, the variation of the normal force with respect to the angle of attack appears to stall in the mid attack angle range with a large scale separation in the wake. To date however, no surface pressures have been measured on auto-rotating plates that are typical of a certain class of debris. This paper presents the results of an experiment to measure the aerodynamic forces on a flat plate held stationary at different angles to the flow and allowing the plate to auto-rotate. The forces were determined through the measurement of differential pressures on either side of the plate with internally mounted pressure transducers and data logging systems. Results are presented for surface pressure distributions and overall integrated forces and moments on the plates in coefficient form. Computed static force coefficients show the stall effect at the mid range angle of attack and some variation for different Reynolds numbers. Normal forces determined from autorotational experiments are higher than the static values at most pitch angles over a cycle. The resulting moment coefficient does not compare well with current analytical formulations which suggest the existence of a flow mechanism that cannot be completely described through static tests.
Inclined and yawed circular cylinder is an essential element in the widespread range of structures. As one of the applications, cables on bridges were reported to have the possibility of suffering a kind of large amplitude vibration called dry galloping. In order to have a detailed understanding of the aerodynamics related to dry galloping, this study carried out a set of wind tunnel tests for the inclined and yawed circular cylinders. The aerodynamic coefficients of circular cylinders with three surface configurations, including smooth, dimpled pattern and helical fillet are tested using the force balance under a wide range of inclination and yaw angles in the wind tunnel. The Reynolds number ranges from $2{\times}10^5$ to $7{\times}10^5$ during the test. The influence of turbulence intensity on the drag and lift coefficients is corrected. The effects of inclination angle yaw angle and surface configurations on the aerodynamic coefficients are discussed. Adopting the existed the quasi-steady model, the nondimensional aerodynamic damping parameters for the cylinders with three kinds of surface configurations are evaluated. It is found that surface with helical fillet or dimpled pattern have the potential to suppress the dry galloping, while the latter one is more effective.

The objective of present study is to investigate the sensitivity of aerostatic force coefficients of twin box girder of Yi Sun-sin Bridge according to the Reynolds numbers. This paper presents the 1:30 scale sectional model tests conducted at high speed wind tunnel in Korea Air Force Academy. Comparison with results at low Reynolds number obtained in KOCED Wind Tunnel Center in Chonbuk National University is also provide. The Reynolds number dependency of aerodynamic force coefficients were observed at present streamlined twin box girder. The drag coefficient revealed significant decrease of nearby 23% at supercritical region. The boundary layer trip strip was found to reduce the Reynolds number dependency of aerodynamic forces by fixing the location of flow transition.
This paper is devoted to the non linear quasi-steady aerodynamic loading. A linear approximation is often used to compute the response of structures to buffeting forces. Some researchers have however shown that it is possible to account for the non linearity of this loading. This non linearity can come (i) from the squared velocity or (ii) from the shape of the aerodynamic coefficients (as functions of the wind angle of attack). In this paper, it is shown that this second origin can have significant implications on the design of the structure, particularly when the non linearity of the aerodynamic coefficient is important or when the transverse turbulence is important.
This paper presents the results of numerical simulation of wind environment and wind coefficient around super high-rise building. The analysis of aerodynamic response due to wind-induced forces and wind effect to surrounding buildings is important to high-rise building. This paper simulates the wind force to the high-rise building and wind flow pattern around the high-rise building, and shows the usability of CFD analysis to design process of high-rise building. A Navier-Stokes-Solver (FLUENT) with Quick spatial discretization scheme and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model has been applied to the computation of the three dimensional turbulent flow.

This study was conducted to investigate the running stability of a high-speed train operated in a tunnel and an open field when external forces such as wind pressure and train crossings were applied to the vehicle. With no external force, the running stability at 400 km/h was examined, and the wheel weight reduction ratio, lateral pressure of the axles, and derailment coefficient satisfied the criteria of the technical standards for a high-speed train. When the distance between the centers of the tracks is 4.6 m, the external force caused by train crossing slightly affects the lateral acceleration of the vehicle but does not significantly affect the wheel weight reduction rate, lateral pressure, and derailment coefficient in a tunnel and open filed. When the distance is 4.6~5.0 m, the wheel weight reduction ratio, lateral pressure, and derailment coefficient satisfy the criteria with 20 m/s wind. When the wind speed was 30 m/s, the derailment coefficient satisfied the criteria, and the other variables exceeded them. It is predicted that a high-speed train can be operated safely at 400 km/h with wind speed of up to 20 m/s, and it should be slowed down at a wind speed of 30 m/s.
Wind tunnel model studies were carried out to determine the wind load distribution on tributary areas near the gable-end of large, low-rise buildings with high pitch planar and curved roof shapes. Background pressure fluctuations on each tributary area are described by a series of uncorrelated modes given by the eigenvectors of the force covariance matrix. Analysis of eigenvalues shows that the dominant first mode contributes around 40% to the fluctuating pressures, and the eigenvector mode-shape generally follows the mean pressure distribution. The first mode contributes significantly to the fluctuating load effect, when its influence line is similar to the mode-shape. For such cases, the effective static pressure distribution closely follows the mean pressure distribution on the tributary area, and the quasi-static method would provide a good estimate of peak load effects.
