  • Some controllers have been introduced in various studies to mitigate the negative effects of renewable sources. These have been modified to fit a formed solution in various ways. This paper deals with the voltage regulation of wind farms in voltage dip situations where communication failures occur. The aim is to discuss the modification of the online wind farm management system. To discuss modifications of the online wind farm management system, we focus on voltage regulation of wind farms when communication failures occur. The structure has been designed to respond to a voltage drop when the outer reference is absent due to communication errors. Since the loss reduction effect has been maintained in the designed case studies, it can be derived that the proposed method can respond to voltage drops, along with a used objective function.

  • Owing to the variability of large-scaled wind power system, the development of wind farm management technologies and related compensation methods have been receiving attention. To provide an accurate and reliable output power, certain wind farm adopts a specified management system including a wind prediction model and grid expectation solutions for considering grid condition. Those technologies are focused on improving the reliability and stability issues of wind farms, which can affect not only nearby system devices but also a voltage condition of utility grid. Therefore, to adapt the develop management system, an expectation process about voltage condition of Point of Common Coupling should be integrated in operating system for responding system requirements in real-time basis. This paper introduce a grid imposing method for a real-time based wind farm management system. The expected power can be transferred to the power flow section and the required quantity about reactive power can be calculated through the proposed system. For the verification process, the gauss-seidel method is introduced in the Matlab/Simulink for analysing power flow condition. The entire simulation process was designed to interwork with PSCAD for verifying real power system condition.

  • Generation of electricity using wind power has received considerable attention worldwide in recent years mainly due to its minimal environmental impact. However, volatility of wind power production causes additional problems to provide reliable electricity to an electrical grid regarding power system operations, power system planning, and wind farm operations. Those problems require appropriate stochastic models for the electricity generation output of wind power. In this study, we review previous literatures for developing the stochastic model for the wind power generation, and propose a systematic procedure for developing a stochastic model. This procedure shows a way to build an ARIMA model of volatile wind power generation using historical data, and we suggest some important considerations. In addition, we apply this procedure into a case study for a wind farm in the Republic of Korea, Shinan wind farm, and shows that our proposed model is helpful for capturing the volatility of wind power generation.

  • Wind turbines causes instabilities on the grid as their penetration increase. To mitigate harmful effects from wind turbines, transmission system operator(TSO) set up some requirements to obligate for wind generation operator for grid connection. So wind farm management system(WFMS) has important role to follow requirement from TSO, WFMS calculates available real power by considering wake effects, and dispatches real power order to each wind turbine in wind farm to optimize for decreasing load fatigue. To verify operation of WFMS, real-time simulator(RTS) is necessary. This paper deals with RTS configuration to verify WFMS operation. RTS includes wind farm model and power flow code. Normally, wind farm equivalent simple model makes wind turbines in wind farm to one wind turbine mode which cannot verify power flow in wind farm and WFMS operation. Thus, this paper makes wind farm model using simple wind turbine model with transfer function. Matlab is used for make power flow code and wind farm model to impose RTS and those model is certified by PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper aimed to design and implement an EMS for real-time power generation control based on wake effect optimization of wind farm, and then to test it in commercial operating wind farm. For real-time control, we proposed the wake band-based optimization and setting the wake effect distance limit, and when the wake effect distance limit was set to 7D in the actual wind farm layout, the calculation time was improved by about 93.94%. In addition, we designed and implemented the script-based EMS for flexible operation logic management in preparation for unexpected issues during testing, and it was installed and tested on a wind farm in commercial operation. However, three issues arose during the testing process. These are the communication interface problem of meteorological tower, the problem of an abnormal wake effect, and the problem of wind turbine yaw control. These issues were solved by modifying the operation logic using EMS's script editor, and the test was successfully completed in the wind farm in commercial operation.

  • This paper proposes the fuzzy modeling and robust stability analysis of wind farm based on prediction model for wind speed. Owing to the sensitivity of wind speed, it is necessary to study the dynamic equation of the variable speed wind turbine. In this paper, based on the least-square method, the wind speed prediction model which is varied by the surrounding environment is proposed so that it is possible to evaluate the practicability of our model. And, we propose the composition of intelligent wind farm and use the fuzzy model which is suitable for the design of fuzzy controller. Finally, simulation results for wind farm which is modeled mathematically are demonstrated to visualize the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Of the new and renewable energies currently being pursued domestically, wind energy, together with solar photovoltaic energy, is a new core growth driver industry of Korea. As of May 2012, 33 wind farms at a capacity of 347.8MW are in operation domestically. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze how efficiently each operational wind farm is utilizing its power generation capacity and the weather resource of wind. For this purpose, the study proceeded in 3 phases. In phase 1, ANOVA analysis was performed for each wind farm, thereby categorizing farms according to capacity, region, generator manufacturer, and quantity of weather resources available and comparing and analyzing the differences among their operating efficiency. In phase 2, for comparative analysis of the operating efficiency of each farm, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to calculate the efficiency index of individual farms. In the final phase, phase 3, regression analysis was used to analyze the effects of weather resources and the operating efficiency of the wind farm on the power generation per unit equipment. Results shows that for wind power generation, only a few farms had relatively high levels of operating efficiency, with most having low efficiency. Regression analysis showed that for wind farms, a 1 hour increase in wind speeds of at least 3m/s resulted in an average increase of 0.0000045MWh in power generation per 1MW generator equipment capacity, and a unit increase in the efficiency scale was found to result in approximately 0.20MWh power generation improvement per unit equipment.

  • The purposes of this study are to provide a guideline for the suitability of wind farm facilities in forest lands and to suggest improvement plans of policies and systems to minimize the damage of forest lands. First, we implemented a literature review and field surveys to examine and select factors for the suitability of wind farm facilities in forest lands. Spatial database for selected location factors of wind farm facilities in forest lands was constructed to develop the suitability model for locating wind farm facilities focusing on Gangwon-do. Data used in this study include wind power resource, legal mountainous preserved area, forest roads, developed areas, forest class, and other spatial data. In order to find specific-sized potential areas for a certain number of wind farm turbines, we used block statistics and focal statistics methods. As a result, the areas for potential wind farm locations were 1,261ha from a block statistics method and 1,411ha from a focal statistics method. Based on the outputs of this research, it is required to make an urgent solution for the prevention of forest disaster and to prepare reduction measures for the destruction of ridge landscape.
