  • The assessment of the current and future climate change-induced potential wind energy is an important issue in the planning and operations of wind farm. Here, the authors analyze spatiotemporal characteristics and variabilities of wind energy over Korean Peninsula in the near future (2006-2040) using Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP) scenarios data. In this study, National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) regional climate model HadGEM3-RA based RCP 2.6 and 8.5 scenarios are analyzed. The comparison between ERA-interim and HadGEM3-RA during the period of 1981-2005 indicates that the historical simulation of HadGEM3-RA slightly overestimates (underestimates) the wind energy over the land (ocean). It also shows that interannual and intraseasonal variability of hindcast data is generally larger than those of reanalysis data. The investigation of RCP scenarios based future wind energy presents that future wind energy density will increase over the land and decrease over the ocean. The increase in the wind energy and its variability is particularly significant over the mountains and coastal areas, such as Jeju island in future global warming. More detailed analysis presents that the changes in synoptic conditions over East Asia in future decades can influence on the predicted wind energy abovementioned. It is also suggested that the uncertainty of the predicted future wind energy may increase because of the increase of interannual and intra-annual variability. In conclusion, our results can be used as a background data for devising a plan to develop and operate wind farm over the Korean Peninsula.

  • In order to investigate of possibility for developing urban wind power, wind profile and wind power density are estimated using Sodar and Lidar based on surface. Since poor performance of Sodar and Lidar are often shown in a paticular meteorological condition, inter-comparison and validation with radio-sonde for each of instruments are performed. As a result, Lidar shows a good performance and wind data from Lidar are used to analyze wind profile and wind power density. It can be found that a wind power system mounted tall building in urban area is very attractive.

  • This paper presents and overview analysis on the observed wind shear at Pohang Steel Works. focusing on diurnal patterns and the frequency of high nighttime shear at the site in case of land breeze. In addition, this paper discusses the importance of accurate shear estimation for reliable evaluation of wind energy density. In order for long-term correlation of the site, three Measure-Correlate-Predict methods were tested with Pohang wind data and it was shown that the linear MCP gives poor estimation due to the topological characteristics of complex terrain where the severe transformation of wind direction was accompanied.

  • Over the last decade, wind turbine industry has rapidly increased around world. These days many parts of the wind generators are induction generator. But it has some problems such as gearbox failure, rotor excitation and maintenance. Thus many manufacturers are considered permanent magnet synchronous generator named PMSG and direct drive. PMSG uses NdFeB magnet has many the advantage compare with induction generator. In this study, 3MW class outer rotor type PMSG for wind turbine is proposed. The generator features 2.6m stator outer radius, 1200mm stator length, 81 pole pairs, 14 rated rpm, 42kN/$m^2$ shear force density and 94.2% efficiency. Design and analysis generator using FEM program. Then calculate and derivate no load voltage, losses, conductor temperature. To reduce total harmonic distortion and cogging torque, the stator is applied the stator skewing. And to evaluate the designed generator, compare with other generators by active mass per rating torque and torque density.

  • To understand general status of the national wind environment and to distinguish potential areas to be developed as a largescale wind farm, a synoptic wind map of the Korean Peninsula is established by processing remote sensing data of the satellite, NASA QuikSCAT which Is deployed for the SeaWinds Project since 1999. According to the validation results obtained by comparing with the measurement data of marine buoys of KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration), the cross-correlation factor Is greatly Improved up to 0.87 by blending the sea-surface dat3 of QuikSCAT with NCEP/NCAR CDAS data. It is found from the established synoptic wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows high energy density up to the wind class 6 spatially. The reason is deduced that the northwest winds through the yellow Sea and the northeast winds through the East Sea derived by the low-pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed by the statistical analysis of meteorological observation data of KMA.

  • This paper presents an estimation method of national wind resource potential using a national and GIS(Geographical Information System). The wind resource potential is classified into theoretical, geographical and technical potentials and each category narrows down the previous definition by excluding impossible area to be developed as a wind farm using GIS datasets for onshore and offshore. As a basic unit of wind energy potential at a certain area, API(Average Power Intercepted) is calculated from WPD(Wind Power Density) given by a national wind map which is established by numerical wind simulation, so that a logical and relatively accurate potential estimation is possible comparing with other methods based on a field measurement interpolation which is inevitable to avoid critical assumptions.

  • The wind speed at the altitude around 300 m is much higher and less variable than at the altitude around 80 m which is the same height of the MW class tower turbine's hub height. The wind power density is increased 0.37 W/$m^2$ per meter at the altitude around 6 to 7 km and 0.25 W/$m^2$ per meter at the altitude around 80 to 500 m. There are two types of power generation systems using lifting bodies. The one is that The generator is installed in the ground station and stretched into the lifting body through the tether. The other is that the generator is installed in the lifting body and stretched into the ground station through the tether. Many kinds of lifting bodies are also researched in the world, called kites, wings, single or twin aerostat, and so on. This article introduced the technical development status and the market prospects of the high altitude wind power generation system all over the world in detail.

  • The selection of a site where strong wind blows is important to increase effectively the electricity of wind power in proportion to the cube of the wind speed. It is advisable to establish the wind turbine in the coastal area with strong wind speed rather than in the inland. And the development of offshore wind energy is expected to solve the noise problem that is one of the important weaknesses in the wind turbine. In the process of the development business of wind energy, knowing forehead the wind power possibility in any area is one of the essential factors to choose the most optimum site of wind power. In this paper, the potential of wind power around JeJu coastal area is examined by using the wind data that Korea Meteorological Administration has surveyed for 10 years in 14 observation points. Wind speed data is revised to wind speed in 80 meters assuming installation height of the wind turbine, and wind power density and annual wind energy are also calculated. And annual electricity generation and percent of energy efficiency in all the observation points are estimated by using the information about 3,000 KW wind turbine.

  • Massive offshore wind projects of have recently been driven in full gear on the Western Offshore of Korea including the 2.5 GW West-Southern Offshore Wind Project of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the 5 GW Offshore Wind Project of the Jeollanamdo Provincial Government. On this timely occasion, this study performed a general wind resource assessment on the Western Offshore by using the MERRA reanalysis data of temporal-spatial resolution and accuracy greatly improved comparing to conventional reanalysis data. It is hard to consider that wind resources on the Western Sea are excellent, since analysis results indicated the average wind speed of 6.29 ± 0.39 m/s at 50 m above sea level, and average wind power density of 307 ± 53 W/m2. Therefore, it is considered that activities shall be performed for guarantee economic profits from factor other than wind resources when developing an offshore wind project on the Western Offshore.

  • Energy storage devices with high energy density as well as high power density are expected to be developed from the point of view of compensation of fluctuating load and generated power by distributed generations such as wind turbines, photovoltaic cells and so on. SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) has higher power density than other energy storage methods, and secondary batteries have higher energy density than SMES. The hybrid energy storage device using SMES and secondary batteries is proposed as the energy storage method with higher power and energy density, the sharing method of power reference value for each storage device, simulation and experimental results are presented.
