This study analyzes the response of a tall building with an H-shaped cross-section when subjected to wind loading generated by the same H-shape. As normative standards usually adopt regular geometries for determining the wind loading, this paper shows unpublished results which compares results of the dynamic response of H-shaped buildings with the response of simplified section buildings. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is employed to determine the steady wind load on the H-shaped building. The CFD models are validated by comparison with wind tunnel test data for the k-ε and k-ω models of turbulence. Transient wind loading is determined using the Synthetic Wind Method. A new methodology is presented that combines Stochastic and CFD methods. In addition, time-history dynamic structural analysis is performed using the HHT method for a period of 60 seconds on finite element models. First, the along-wind response is studied for wind speed variations. The wind speeds of 28, 36, 42, and 50 m/s at 0° case are considered. Subsequently, the dynamic response of the building is studied for wind loads at 0°, 45°, and 90° with a wind speed of 42 m/s, which approximates the point of resonance between gusts of wind and the structure. The response values associated with the first two directions for the H-shaped building are smaller than those for the R-shaped (Equivalent Rectangular Shape) one. However, the displacements of the H-shaped building associated with the latter wind load are larger.

This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.
This study was carried out to research the influence of climatic conditions including wind direction, wind speed on air pollution in Seoul. The data were obtained from the 4 sites of air pollution monitoring stations in Seoul from '95 to '96, and analyzed statistically by SAS program. The results were as follows 1. The prevailing wind directions by season in each site were as follows Nangajwa-dong were showed SE in spring, fall, winter and WNW in summer. Ssangmun-dong were showed NW in spring, fall, winter and NNE in summer. Kuro-dong were showed SW in spring, summer, ENE in fall and NW in winter. Bangi-dong were showed WNW in four seeasons. 2. The concentrations of 5 kinds(SO$_2$, Dust, NO$_2$, CO, THC) of air pollutants were relatively low in west wind. In case of O$_3$ was opposite. 3. The concentrations of 5 kinds of air pollutants were increase with decreasing wind speeds. 4. The washing effects of air pollution by rain were significant. The concentrations of 5 kinds of air pollutants were high when the humidity were 61-80%, and low as it were 0-20%. In case of O$_3$ was opposite. 5. All of air pollutants concentrations but O$_3$ were high when the UV intensity level and temperature within the range of above zero were low level.

The fluctuating wind pressure of the low rise ratio(f/D=0.1) for the elliptical dome roof was analyzed to compare it with the previous studies of circular dome roofs. Wind tunnel test were conducted on a total of 10 wind directions from 0° to 90° while changing wall height-span ratios(H/D=0.1-0.5). For this, meanCP, rmsCP and wind pressure spectrum were analyzed. The analysis result leads to find differences in the shape of the spectra in the spanwise direction and leeward of the elliptical dome according to the wind direction variations of the elliptical dome roof.
The concept of Performance objective assessment is extended to wind engineering. This approach applies using the Database-Assisted Design technique, relying on the aerodynamic database provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A structural model of a low-rise building is analyzed to obtain influence coefficients for internal forces and displacements. Combining these coefficients with time histories of pressure coefficients on the envelope produces time histories of load effects on the structure, for example knee and ridge bending moments, and eave lateral drift. The peak values of such effects are represented by an extreme-value Type I Distribution, which allows the estimation of the gust wind speed leading to the mean hourly extreme loading that cause specific performance objective compromises. Firstly a fully correlated wind field over large tributary areas is assumed and then relaxed to utilize the denser pressure tap data available but with considerably more computational effort. The performance objectives are determined in accordance with the limit state load combinations given in the ASCE 7-16 provisions, particularly the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. The procedure is then repeated for several wind directions and different dominant opening scenarios to determine the cases that produce performance objective criteria. Comparisons with two approaches in ASCE 7 are made.

During a nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, radioactive material may be released into the surrounding environment in the form of a radioactive plume. The behavior of the radioactive plume is influenced by meteorological factors such as wind direction and speed. If the residents are evacuated to a shelter in the direction of the flow of the radioactive plume, the radiation exposure of the residents may increase, contrary to the purpose of the evacuation. To avoid such an undesirable outcome, this paper applies a big data analysis to evaluate the suitability of the shelter locations near 5 NPPs in the Republic of Korea in terms of the seasonal wind direction frequency in those areas. To this end, the wind data measured around the NPPs from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed to derive the seasonal wind direction frequency using a big data analysis. These analyses results were then used to determine how many shelters around NPPs locate in areas with prevailing wind direction per season. Then, suggestions were made on the direction for residents not to evacuate, if possible, that is, the prevailing seasonal wind directions for 5 NPPs, depending on the season in which the accident occurs.
The propagation speed of a circumstellar pattern revealed in the plane of the sky is often assumed to represent the expansion speed of the wind matter ejected from a post-main-sequence star at the center. We point out that the often-adopted isotropic wind assumption and the binary hypothesis as the underlying origin for the circumstellar pattern in the shape of multilayered shells are, however, mutually incompatible. We revisit the hydrodynamic models for spiral-shell patterns induced by the orbital motion of a hypothesized binary, of which one star is losing mass at a high rate. The distributions of transverse wind velocities as a function of position angle in the plane of the sky are explored along viewing directions. The variation of the transverse wind velocity is as large as half the average wind velocity over the entire three dimensional domain in the simulated models investigated in this work. The directional dependence of the wind velocity is indicative of the overall morphology of the circumstellar material, implying that kinematic information is an important ingredient in modeling the snapshot monitoring (often in the optical and near-infrared) or the spectral imaging observations for molecular line emissions.
Since very large and high-speed ships have been appeared in marine transportation from 1970s, these ships with poor maneuverability have made large-scale accidents frequently all over the world. The IMO(International Maritime Organization) recommended that ship designers should evaluate various maneuvering performance at initial stage and serve them to ship operators when they deliver a new ship. Meantime, it is expected that ships with large and wide superstructure would have poor maneuverability when they are affected by strong wind. Therefore, car carrier ship with large superstructure was selected to confirm how the ship responds to the external wind forces in this paper. The lateral and transverse projected areas above the water level were considered and ship behaviors were checked by change of rudder angles under severe wind conditions of different directions. In addition, hydrodynamic derivatives and coefficients were predicted from ship particulars and numerical calculations were carried out with the mathematical model of low speed maneuvering motions.
The load condition significantly influences ship maneuverability in calm water. In this research, the effect of the load condition on turning performance of a very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) sailing in adverse weather conditions is investigated by an MMG-based maneuvering simulation method. The relative drift direction of the ship in turning to the wave direction is $20^{\circ}-30^{\circ}$ in ballast load condition (NB) and full load condition (DF) with a rudder angle $35^{\circ}$ and almost constant for any wind (wave) directions. The drifting displacement in turning under NB becomes larger than that under DF at the same environmental condition. Advance $A_d$ and tactical diameter $D_t$ become significantly small with an increasing Beaufort scale in head wind and waves when approaching, although $A_d$ and $D_t$ are almost constant in following wind and waves. In beam wind and waves, the tendency depends on the plus and minus of the rudder angle.
In recent years, high-strength, light-weight materials have been widely used in the construction of high-rise buildings. Such structures generally have flexible, low-damping characteristics. Consequently, wind-induced oscillation greatly affects the structural safety and the comfort of the building's occupants. In this research, wind tunnel experiments were carried out to study the wind-induced vibration of a building with a tuned liquid column damper (TLCD). Then, a model for predicting the aerodynamic response in the across-wind direction was generated. Finally, a computing procedure was developed for the analytical modeling of the structural oscillation in a building with a TLCD under the wind load. The model agrees substantially with the experimental results. Therefore, it may be used to accurately calculate the structural response. Results from this investigation show that the TLCD is more advantageous for reducing the across-wind vibration than the along-wind oscillation. When the across-wind aerodynamic effects are considered, the TLCD more effectively controls the aerodynamic response. Moreover, it is also more useful in suppressing the acceleration than the displacement in biaxial directions. As s result, TLCDs are effective devices for reducing the wind-induced vibration in buildings. Parametric studies have also been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the TLCD in suppressing the structural oscillation. This study may help engineers to more correctly predict the aerodynamic response of high-rise buildings as well as select the most appropriate TLCDs for reducing the structural vibration under the wind load. It may also improve the understanding of wind-structure interactions and wind resistant designs for high-rise buildings.
