The turbine industry demands a reliable design with affordable cost. As technological advances begin to support turbines of huge sizes, and the increasing importance of wind turbines from day to day make design safety conditions more important. Wind turbines are exposed to environmental conditions that can affect their installation, durability, and operation. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61400-1 design load cases consist of analyses involving wind turbine operating conditions. This design load cases (DLC) is important for determining fatigue loads (i.e., forces and moments) that occur as a result of expected conditions throughout the life of the machine. With the help of FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence), an open source software, the NREL 5MW land base wind turbine model was used. IEC 61400-1 wind turbine design standard procedures assessed turbine behavior and fatigue damage to the tower base of dynamic loads in different design conditions. Real characteristic wind speed distribution and multi-directional effect specific to the site were taken into consideration. The effect of these conditions on the economic service life of the turbine has been studied.

In a wind farm, a large number of small wind turbine generators (WTGs) operate whilst a small number of a large generator do in a conventional power plant. To maintain high quality and reliability of electrical energy, a wind farm should have equal performance to a thermal power plant in the transient state as well as in the steady state. The wind farm shows similar performance to the conventional power plant in the steady state due to the advanced control technologies. However, it shows quite different characteristics during fault conditions in a grid, which gives significant effects on the operation of a wind farm and the power system stability. This paper presents an analysis of response of a wind farm during grid fault conditions. During fault conditions, each WTG might produce different frequency components in the voltage. The different frequency components result in the non-fundamental frequencies in the voltage and the current of a wind farm, which is called by "beats". This phenomenon requires considerable changes of control technologies of a WTG to improve the characteristics in the transient state such as a fault ride-through requirement of a wind farm. Moreover, it may cause difficulties in protection relays of a wind farm. This paper analyzes the response of a wind farm for various fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.
Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.

Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.
A regional wind network with complex surface conditions must be designed with sufficient space and time resolution to resolve the local circulations. In this study, the spatial variations of the wind field observed in the Seoul and Jeju regional networks were evaluated in terms of annual, seasons, and months to assess the spatial homogeneity of wind fields within the regional networks. The coherency of the wind field as a function of separation distance between stations indicated that significant coherency was sometimes not captured by the network, as inferred by low correlations between adjacent stations. A meso-velocity scale was defined in terms of the spatial variability of the wind within the network. This problem is predictably most significant with weak winds, dull prevailing wind, clear skies and significant topography. The relatively small correlations between stations imply that the wind at a given point cannot be estimated by interpolating winds from the nearest stations. For the Seoul and Jeju regional network, the meso-velocity scale has typically a same order of magnitude as the speed of the network averaged wind, revealing the large spatial variability of the Jeju network station imply topography and weather. Significant scatter in the relationship between spatial variability of the wind field and the wind speed is thought to be related to thermally-generated flows. The magnitude of the mesovelocity scale was significantly different along separation distance between stations, wind speed, intensity of prevailing wind, clear and cloudy conditions, topography. Resultant wind vectors indicate much different flow patterns along condition of contributing factors. As a result, the careful considerations on contributing factors such as prevailing wind in season, weather, and complex surface conditions with topography and land/sea contrast are required to assess the spatial variations of wind field on a regional network. The results in the spatial variation from the mesovelocity scale are useful to represent the characteristics of regional wind speed including lower surface conditions over the grid scale of large scale atmospheric model.

To set the similarity conditions between a prototype usually in the field and its reduced-scale model is a crucial part in model tests. No technique is available to keep perfect similarity for this procedure so far. The experimental work using a wind tunnel is not exceptional. based on the field measurements, the effect of stack parameters and wind conditions on the dispersion of stack plume has been investigated in the laboratory. in this paper intensive methodology is focused on matching these similarities. Due to the limitations to keep perfect similarity conditions some simplifications are involved in common. In this study geometric conditions and kinematic conditions using Froude number and Reynolds number have been con-sidered to keep the similarity conditions required. From the tests it is found that the critical Reynolds number (Recrit) is 2,700 when the height of stack discharge is 50mm. The dispersion has a similar trend for the higher Reynolds number than the critical Reynolds number. It is also found that different Froude number does not make any significant influence for the normalized tracer gas concentrations at the recipient providing the same ratio of the wind speed to the discharge speed. No significant effect of stack diameter is observed in the normalized tracer gas concentrations with the same Frounde number. The similarity conditions therefore used in this study are reliable to simulate the conditions in prototype into the wind tunnel tests.

Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.
A good understanding of normal modal variability of civil structures due to varying environmental conditions such as temperature and wind is important for reliable performance of vibration-based damage detection methods. This paper addresses the quantification of wind-induced modal variability of a cable-stayed bridge making use of one-year monitoring data. In order to discriminate the wind-induced modal variability from the temperature-induced modal variability, the one-year monitoring data are divided into two sets: the first set includes the data obtained under weak wind conditions (hourly-average wind speed less than 2 m/s) during all four seasons, and the second set includes the data obtained under both weak and strong (typhoon) wind conditions during the summer only. The measured modal frequencies and temperatures of the bridge obtained from the first set of data are used to formulate temperature-frequency correlation models by means of artificial neural network technique. Before the second set of data is utilized to quantify the wind-induced modal variability, the effect of temperature on the measured modal frequencies is first eliminated by normalizing these modal frequencies to a reference temperature with the use of the temperature-frequency correlation models. Then the wind-induced modal variability is quantitatively evaluated by correlating the normalized modal frequencies for each mode with the wind speed measurement data. It is revealed that in contrast to the dependence of modal frequencies on temperature, there is no explicit correlation between the modal frequencies and wind intensity. For most of the measured modes, the modal frequencies exhibit a slightly increasing trend with the increase of wind speed in statistical sense. The relative variation of the modal frequencies arising from wind effect (with the maximum hourly-average wind speed up to 17.6 m/s) is estimated to range from 1.61% to 7.87% for the measured 8 modes of the bridge, being notably less than the modal variability caused by temperature effect.
In this study, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulation around Wido Island was performed to analyze the wake effect behind an island. A 10 m/s wind speed and pressure boundary conditions were assigned for the inflow and outflow boundary conditions, respectively. Wido Island was modeled using GIS data. A prevailing wind from the north-northwest direction was determined based on QuikSCAT satellite data. A computational domain of $40km{\times}20km{\times}5km$ covering Wido Island was applied for numerical analysis. Sixty points were specified to extract the wind speed data. A wind speed profile inside the atmospheric boundary layer was compared with a wind profile using a simple power law. It turns out that the wake effect decreases the mean wind speed by 5% more or less, which corresponds to a 14% decrease in wind energy. Thus, the installation of a meteorological mast or development of a wind farm behind Wido Island is not highly recommended.
Background: To understand shade and wind effects on seedling traits of common reed (Phragmites australis), we conducted a mesocosm experiment manipulating day length (10 h daytime a day as open canopy conditions or 6 h daytime a day as partially closed canopy conditions) and wind speed (0 m/s as windless conditions or 4 m/s as windy conditions). Results: Most values of functional traits of leaf blades, culms, and biomass production of P. australis were higher under long day length. In particular, we found sole positive effects of long day length in several functional traits such as internode and leaf blade lengths and the values of above-ground dry weight (DW), rhizome DW, and total DW. Wind-induced effects on functional traits were different depending on functional traits. Wind contributed to relatively low values of chlorophyll contents, angles between leaf blades, mean culm height, and maximum culm height. In contrast, wind contributed to relatively high values of culm density and below-ground DW. Conclusions: Although wind appeared to inhibit the vertical growth of P. australis through physiological and morphological changes in leaf blades, it seemed that P. australis might compensate the inhibited vertical growth with increased horizontal growth such as more numerous culms, indicating a highly adaptive characteristic of P. australis in terms of phenotypic plasticity under windy environments.
