The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167 D, 0.05D and 0.067 D with pitches of PPD=2D, 1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulence Intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of Re$_{D}$=7.8$\times$10$^3$~1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ . At Re$_{D}$=1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ , the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared that with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.der.

A possibility of the drag coefficient estimation in numerical water basins was discussed where the numerical solution were calculated by the 3-dimensional hydro-dynamical model (FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$) with the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. On the known cases of the drag coefficients for a rectangle, the numerical drag coefficients got $1.34{\sim}1.52$ and the wind tunnel values were $1.3{\sim}1.5$. For a cylinder, the numerical values were calculated as $0.75{\sim}0.78$ in the range of 0.5

A numerical study on the flow over a square cylinder in the vicinity of a wall is conducted for different Couette-Poiseuille-based non-uniform flow with the non-dimensional pressure gradient P varying from 0 to 5. The non-dimensional gap ratio L (=$H^{\ast}/a^{\ast}$) is changed from 0.1 to 2, where $H^{\ast}$ is gap height between the cylinder and wall, and $a^{\ast}$ is the cylinder width. The governing equations are solved numerically through finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm on a staggered grid system. Both P and L have a substantial influence on the flow structure, time-mean drag coefficient ${\bar{C}}_D$, fluctuating (rms) lift coefficient ($C_L{^{\prime}}$), and Strouhal number St. The changes in P and L leads to four distinct flow regimes (I, II, III and IV). Following the flow structure change, the ${\bar{C}}_D$, $C_L{^{\prime}}$, and St all vary greatly with the change in L and/or P. The ${\bar{C}}_D$ and $C_L{^{\prime}}$ both grow with increasing P and/or L. The St increases with P for a given L, being less sensitive to L for a smaller P (< 2) and more sensitive to L for a larger P (> 2). A strong relationship is observed between the flow regimes and the values of ${\bar{C}}_D$, $C_L{^{\prime}}$ and St. An increase in P affects the pressure distribution more on the top surface than on bottom surface while an increase in L does the opposite.
This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.

The two dimensional PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurement technique is applied to water flow in a narrow cavitation tunnel. The nearly homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows are generated by the honeycomb installed in the tunnel and visualized with a PIV technique. The velocities in the measurement plane at the tunnel centerline 184cm downward from the honeycomb were measured and calculated by an image correlation technique. The turbulent properties are evaluated and each term in the turbulent kinetic energy equation is calculated for the conditions with different internal pressures. Lowering the internal pressure gives an effect on the turbulent flow due to growing bubbles which are resolved in the water. The turbulent kinetic energy in the measurement plane is decayed much slower than those of other research results carried out with wind tunnels. With decreasing the tunnel internal pressures the turbulent intensities are increased about 1.5 times and the anisotropic tendency is also increased.

Shore-to-sea visible light communication using color clustered multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) is presented. The proposed maritime visible light communication (MVLC) offers a low-cost, high-speed wireless link for shore-to-sea maritime communications. Each color cluster is comprised of 50 red, green and blue (RGB) light emitting diodes (LEDs) and is modulated using on-off-keying (OOK). Selection combining is performed at the receiver, producing diversity effect within that color cluster. In this paper, we employ sea states (wave height, wind speed, etc.) data from both Pierson-Moskowitz and JONSWAP spectrum models under atmospheric turbulence conditions. Based on the simulation model, the maritime link quality is analysed in terms of coverage distance and bit error rate performance. The results show that the proposed system provides an efficient MVLC, while satisfying International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) requirements for maritime buoyage system and also offering sufficient illumination from high power LEDs.
For super long-span bridges, the aerodynamic forces induced by the flow passing the box girder should be considered carefully. And the Reynolds number sensitively of aerodynamic characteristics is one of considerable issue. In the study, a numerical study on the Reynolds number sensitivity of aerodynamic characteristic (flow pattern, pressure distribution and aerodynamic forces) of a twin-box girder were carried out using large eddy simulation (LES) with the dynamic Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid model. The results show that the aerodynamic characteristics have strong correlation with the Reynolds number. At the leading edge, the flow experiences attachment, departure, and reattachment stages accompanying by the laminar transition into turbulence, causing pressure plateaus to form on the surface, and the pressure plateaus gradually shrinks. Around the gap, attributing that the flow experiences stages of laminar cavity flow, the wake with alternate shedding vortices, and turbulent cavity flow in sequence with an increase in the Reynolds number, the pressures around the gap vary greatly with the Reynold number. At the trailing edge, the pressure gradually recovers as the flow transits to turbulence (the flow undergoes wake instability, shear layer transition-reattachment station), In addition, at relative high Reynolds numbers, the drag force almost does not change, however, the lift force coefficient gradually decreases with an increase in Reynolds number.
This study investigates energy fluxes measured near Gangjeong-Goryeong Weir of the Nakdong River of South Korea for more than a year, from July 2011 to September 2012, in order to analyze the applicability of the data for future impact analyses. Each of the two study sites is located in a rural area, surrounded by agricultural fields, and an urban industrial area. Sensible and latent heat fluxes are analyzed according to the wind direction. In the summertime, when the wind blows from the river, sensible heat tends to decrease and latent heat tends to increase at both sites. This result is considered to be caused by moisture transfer from the river. Bowen ratio, energy balance closure, momentum flux, and stability are analyzed as well. The Bowen ratio of the rural agricultural site turns out higher than that of the urban site regardless of the season. The energy balance closure is higher at the agricultural site compared to the urban area, which is mainly due to exclusion of the storage term calculation at the urban site. The momentum flux is greater at the urban site both in winter and summer. The instability lasts longer during daytime and in the summertime, when there is a strong turbulence. The data from these sites are appropriate to be used in analyzing the impact of river in surrounding areas for future studies.

As environmental regulations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s strategy to reduce greenhouse gases(GHG) are strengthened, technology development such as eco-friendly ships and alternative fuels is expanding. As part of this, ship propulsion technology using energy reduction and wind propulsion technology is emerging, especially in shipping companies and shipbuilders. By securing wind propulsion technology and introducing empirical research into shipbuilding and shipping, a high value-added market using eco-friendly technology can be created. Moreover, by reducing the fuel consumption rate of operating ships, GHG can be reduced by 6-8%. Rotor Sail (RS) technology is to generate a hydrodynamic lift in the vertical direction of the cylinder when the circular cylinder rotates at a constant speed and passes through the fluid. This is called the Magnus effect, and this study attempted to propose a plan to increase propulsion efficiency through a numerical analysis study on turbulence flow characteristics around RS, a wind power assistance propulsion system installed on a ship. Therefore, CL and CD values according to SR and AR changes were derived as parameters that affect the aerodynamic force of the RS, and the flow characteristics around the rotor sail were compared according to EP application.

The tip clearance effect on counter-rotating ducted fan of VTOL UAV in hovering condition, was investigate using computational analysis. The $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model is employed in this study. The numerical results of baseline model are validated by wind tunnel test in hovering and forward conditions. It is observed that if tip clearance of one rotor in the counter-rotating ducted fan increase then the thrust coefficient of another rotor increases. In Addition to this, when the tip clearance of the rear rotor increases, the thrust of the ducted fan is improved due to increasing of average total pressure at exit plane.
