  • We investigated wind environment impact of the building of the KIER Waljeong Station in Jeju Island. From the preliminary qualitative analysis using the VirtualWind simulator, we confirmed that an influence caused by the 11m-tall 30m-aparted building on the 1.5MW wind turbine at Waljeong Station in not negligible. As a next step, VirtualWind simulation and the 100m met-tower measurement at the Waljeong Station is going to be compared to identify a building effect quantitatively.

  • In this paper, a maximum output power control of stand-alone cage-type induction generator systems for wind power generation is proposed. The induction generator is operated in a vector-controlled mode, which is excited with d-axis current and of which torque is controlled with q-axis current. The generator speed is controlled by this torque, along which speed the generator produces the maximum output power. The generated power charges the battery bank for energy storage through an ac/dc PWM converter. The proposed scheme has been verified for the wind turbine simulator system which consists of M-G set.

  • A real time simulation method for the stand-alone Wind Power Generation System (WPGS) based on the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is proposed in this paper for the simulations under the real weather conditions. The wind turbine characteristic equation of a wind turbine is reconstructed in the RTDS, and then the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the RTDS through the analogue input Ports of the RTDS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results show that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency and stability of the WPGS.

  • This paper presents a method for early fire detection and fire position determination inside the nacelle of wind turbine generator system. The rising temperature and obscuration rates inside the nacelle were used as parameters for fire detection, which can minimize the possibility of a fire detection malfunction because these rising rates do not depend on the absolute values of temperature and obscuration. The fire position was determined using the time difference among various sensor positions for fire detection. The performance of the method was tasted using sets of experiments in a nacelle simulator.

  • The paper presented a method of early fire detection based on the environmental characteristics inside the nacelle of wind turbine generator system(WTGS). The rising rates of the temperature and smoke density were used as the parameters for early fire detection. By considering the characteristics of temperature and smoke density of a nacelle, this method is very reliable and can minimize the possibility of a malfunction of fire detection. The performance of the method was tested through sets of experiments by using nacelle simulator.

  • A grid connection algorithm is proposed for the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) which is widely adopted in high power variable speed wind turbine. Before the stator of DFIG is connected to grid, rotor-side converter is used to control the induced stator voltage. As a result, the stator transient current is limited below the rate value during the connection by the proposed synchronization of the stator voltage to the grid voltage. A wind power generation simulator using DC motor and wound-rotor induction generator is built and the dynamic characteristics of proposed algorithm is verified experimentally.

  • In a power grid that has a high penetration of wind power, the highly-fluctuating output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) adversely impacts the power quality in terms of the system frequency. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a variable-speed WTG that can smooth its fluctuating output power caused by varying wind speeds, thereby improving system frequency regulation. To achieve this, an additional loop relying on the frequency deviation that operates in association with the maximum power point tracking control loop, is proposed; its control gain is modified with the rotor speed. For a low rotor speed, to ensure the stable operation of a WTG, the gain is set to be proportional to the square of the rotor speed. For a high rotor speed, to improve the power smoothing capability, the control gain is set to be proportional to the cube of the rotor speed. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated under varying wind speeds for the IEEE 14-bus system using an EMTP-RV simulator. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can mitigate the output power fluctuation of WTGs caused by varying wind speeds by adjusting the control gain depending on the rotor speed, thereby supporting system frequency regulation.

  • In a power system with a high wind power penetration level, the output power of a wind power plant (WPP) might give negative impacts on the frequency control of a power system. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a wind turbine generator (WTG) to reduce the frequency deviation. To do this, an additional control loop is used, the output of which depends on the frequency deviation. The gain of the additional loop is determined depending on the kinetic energy (KE) of a WTG; in the under frequency condition, the gain is set to be proportional to the releasable KE of a WTG; otherwise, it is set to the maximum value. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for 100-MW doubly-fed induction generator based WPP using an EMTP-RV simulator under various wind conditions. The results show that the proposed scheme successfully reduces the frequency deviation.
