In the present study, two numerical methods were developed and compared for the performance prediction of the horizontal axis energy conversion turbine. The Blade Element Momentum Theory was adopted, and the rotating reference frame method for Computational Fluid Dynamics solver was also used. Hybrid meshing was used for the complex geometry of turbines. The analysis results using each method were compared to figure out a better method for the performance prediction.
In the present study, the effects of contaminant accumulation and surface roughness on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blade sections were numerically investigated by using a flow solver based on unstructured meshes. The turbulent flow over the rough surface was modeled by a modified ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model. The calculations were made for the NREL S809 airfoil with varying contaminant sizes and positions at several angles of attack. It was found that as the contaminant size increases, the degradation of the airfoil performance becomes more significant, and this trend is further amplified near the stall condition. When the contaminant is located at the upper surface near the leading edge, the loss in the aerodynamic performance of the blade section becomes more critical. It was also found that the surface roughness leads to a significant reduction of lift, in addition to increased drag.

Double-blade vertical axis wind turbines (DB-VAWTs) can improve the self-starting performance of lift-driven VAWTs. We here propose the quadruple-multiple streamtube model (QMS), based on the blade element momentum (BEM) theory, for simulating DB-VAWT performance. Model validity is investigated by comparison to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prediction for two kinds of two-dimensional DB-VAWT rotors for two rotor scales with three inner-outer radius ratios: 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75. The BEM-QMS model does not consider the effects of an inner rotor on the flow speed in the upwind half of the rotor, so we introduce a correction factor for this flow speed. The maximum power coefficient predicted by the modified BEM-QMS model for a DB-VAWT is thus closer to the CFD prediction.

This study describes aerodynamic characteristics for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) rotor blade using general CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The boundary conditions for analysis are validated with the experimental result by the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory)/NASA Ames wind tunnel test for S809 airfoil. In the case of wind turbine rotor blade, complex phenomena are appeared such as flow separation and re-attachment. Those are handled by using a commercial flow analysis tool. The 2-equation k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model and transition model appear to be well suited for the prediction. The 3-dimensional phenomena in the HAWT rotor blade is simulated by a commercial 3-D aerodynamic analysis tool. Tip vortex geometry and Radial direction flows along the blade are checked by the analysis.
A significant change in aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine blade can occur by ice formed on the surface of the blade operated in cold climate. The ice accretion can result in performance loss, overloading due to delayed stall, and excessive vibration associated with mass imbalance. In this study, the impact of ice accretion on the aerodynamic characteristics of NREL 5MW wind turbine blade sections is examined by a CFD-based method. It is shown that the thickness of ice accretion increases from the root to the tip and the effects of icing conditions such as relative wind velocity play a significant role in the shape of ice accretion. In addition, the computational results are used to assess the degradation in the lift and drag coefficients of the blade sections.

In this paper, preliminary results for performance prediction of a dual-rotor wind turbine generator system are presented. Blade element and momentum theories are used to model the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the rotor blades, and multi-body dynamics approach is used to integrate the major components to represent the overall system. Not only the steady-state performance but the transient response characteristics are analyzed. Pitch control strategy to control the rotor speed and the generator output is proposed and its performance is verified through the nonlinear simulation.
An aerodynamic design tool was developed for small wind turbine blades based on the blade element momentum theory. The lift and drag coefficients of blades that are needed for aerodynamic blade design were obtained in real time from the Xfoil program developed at University of Illinois. While running, the developed tool automatically accesses the Xfoil program, runs it with proper aerodynamic and airfoil properties, and finally obtains lift and drag coefficients. The obtained aerodynamic coefficients are then used to find out optimal twist angles and chord lengths of the airfoils. The developed tool was used to design a wind turbine blade using low Reynolds number airfoils, SG6040 and SG6043 to have its maximum power coefficient at a specified tip speed ratio. The performance of the blade was verified by a commercial code well known for its prediction accuracies.

The geometry of engineering systems affects their performances. For this reason, the shape of engineering systems needs to be optimized in the initial design stage. However, engineering system design problems consist of multi-objective optimization and the performance analysis using commercial code or numerical analysis is generally time-consuming. To solve these problems, many engineers perform the optimization using the approximation model (response surface). The Response Surface Method (RSM) is generally used to predict the system performance in engineering research field, but RSM presents some prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this research is to establish an optimal design method for multi-objective problems and confirm its applicability. The proposed process is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of response surface, and optimization process. To reduce the time for performance analysis and minimize the prediction errors, the approximation model is generated using the Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) which is considered as Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). The optimization is done for the generated response surface by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Through case studies of marine system and ship structure (substructure of floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamics performances and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance), we have confirmed the applicability of the proposed method for multi-objective side constraint optimization problems.
In this paper, a free wake analysis based on the curved vortex element and CVC wake model is used to predict the aerodynamic performance and noise for HAWT. Also for prediction of RPM, a maximum value through a quadratic regression was suggested. And for a noise prediction, the broadband noise prediction method based on experimental equation was used. The curved vortex element uses a BCVE and an SIVE instead of a straight vertex element. In the CVC wake model, the vortex strengths are assumed to be constant along a span and a vortex filament. The free wake structure made by the curved vortex element and CVC was substituted for a vortex lattice, so it has an advantage for the less calculation time and a depiction of accurate wake structure. For the verification of this program, calculated results are compared with Mr. Kim's experiment model and Zond Z-40FS for performance and with WTS-4 and USWP models for noise. Good agreements are obtained between the predicted and the measured data for the performance and far-field noise spectra.

The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) was developed by use of BEMT. The Prandtl's tip loss theory was adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil were predicted via X-FOIL and also the post stall characteristics of S-809 were estimated by the Viterna's equations. All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results, performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW(FIL-20) at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data were used for the power prediction of the FIL-20 respectively. The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.
