  • This aim of the study is to demonstrate the effect of a photovoltaic module installed on a small wind-photovoltaic hybrid generation system. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is used to interpret the velocity field around the photovoltaic module and the blade areas of a wind turbine. According to the simulation results, it is obvious that x_velocity and y_velocity varies very significantly with time near the photovoltaic module. This would lead to an increase of periodic wind load caused by flow separation at the edge of the photovoltaic module. This study discusses the flow characteristics in term of velocity and frequency analysis. Moreover we suggest a distance between a photovoltaic module and a wind turbine to avoid partially the negative effect caused by the photovoltaic module.

  • In this paper, a wind turbine with power splitting transmission, which is realized through a novel three-shaft planetary, is presented. The input shaft of the transmission is driven by the rotor of the wind turbine, the output shaft is connected to the grid via the main generator (asynchronous generator), and the third shaft is driven by a control motor with variable speed. The dynamic models of the sub systems of this wind turbine, e.g. the rotor aerodynamics, the drive train dynamics and the power generation unit dynamics, were given and linearized at an operating point. These sub models were integrated in a multidisciplinary dynamic model, which is suitable for control syntheses to optimize the utilization of wind energy and to reduce the excessive dynamic loads. The important dynamic behaviours were investigated and a wind turbine with a soft main shaft was recommend.

  • The modern wind turbines are widely used as important natural energy sources for the electric generation in western countries and some Asian nations. They are commercially matured and progressive and clear policy for the more development with higher technical purposes is maintained throughout the world. Modern wind turbines produce nearly 2000 kW output in their largest sizes and this trend increases up to more powerful power and ultimate utilization of wind energy favoured by clean natural energy. This article has the points of reviewing the states of the art of modern wind turbines with their present technical directions toward next generation version. Some descriptionsare given for easy understanding of the turbine components and related fluid mechanics concerned. The general outlines of policy taken over some countries are also introduced.

  • As wind power has increased steadily, the importance of a condition monitoring system is being emphasized to maximize the availability and reliability of a wind turbine. To develop the advanced algorithms for fault detection and lifespan estimation, a wind turbine simulator is essential for verification of the proposed algorithms before applying them to a condition diagnosis & integrity prognosis system. The developed new-type simulator in this paper includes blades and various sensors as well as a motor, a gearbox and a generator of which the existing simulators generally consist. It also has similarity with a 3MW class wind turbine and can be used to acquire operational data from various operation conditions. This paper presents a design method of control logic for the wind turbine simulator, which gives a wind generation method and similar dynamic characteristics with the 3MW wind turbine. Finally, the proposed control logic is verified through experiments.

  • Wind power is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources. The blades length and tower height of wind turbine have been growing steadily in the last 10 years in order to increase the output amount of wind power energy. The amount of wind turbine energy is increased by increasing the capacity of wind turbine, but the costs of preventive, corrective and replacement maintenance are also increased accordingly. Recently, Condition Monitoring System that can repair the fault diagnose and repair of wind turbine in the real-time. However, these system have a problem that cannot predict and diagnose of the fault. In this paper, wind turbine predict methodology is proposed by using the SVM method. In the case study, correlation analysis between wind turbine fault and external environmental factors is performed by using the SVM method.

  • This paper presents a simulation model and analysis of grid-tied wind turbine generator with batteries using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. The modeled system is consist of two inverters and one bidirectional DC/DC converter. These inverter are to capture the maximum active power under varying wind conditions and to keep the DC-Link voltage magnitude at a specific level. And the bidirectional DC/DC converter makes battery charging or discharging depend on power gap between wind turbine output and local load. Aerodynamic models are applied for a wind turbine blade simulator.

  • The most important component of wind turbine is rotor blades. The developing method of wind turbine was focused on design of rotor blade. By the way, the design of a rotating body is more decisive process in order to adjust the performance of wind turbine. For instance, the design allows the designer to specify the wind characteristics derived by topographical map. The iterative solver is then used to adjust one of the selected inputs so that the desired rotating performance which is directly related to power generating capacity and efficiency is achieved. Furthermore, in order to save the money for manufacturing the rotor blades and to decrease the maintenance fee of wind power generation plant, while decelerating the cut-in speed of rotor. Therefore, the design and manufacturing of rotating body is understood as a substantial technology of wind power generation plant development. The aiming of this study is building-up the profitable approach to designing of rotating body as a system for the wind power generation plant. The process was conducted in two steps. Firstly, general designing and it’s serial testing of rotating body for voltage measurement. Secondly, the serial test results above were examined with the CFD code. Then, the analysis is made on the basis of amount of electricity generated by rotor-blades and of cut-in speed of generator.

  • This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system with respect to wind variations and three-phase fault in the system. It describes the modeling of the wind turbine system including the drive train model, induction generator model, and grid-interface model on MATLAB/Simulink. Case studies demonstrate that the pitch angle control is carried out to achieve maximum power extraction for wind speed variations and the duration of a fault on the system influences on the output of the wind turbine generator.

  • As the demands for offshore wind power generation systems on a large scale have grown dramatically, and extensive developments in PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and DFIG (Doubly-fed Induction Generator) wind turbine system have been going on. However, the wind power systems have been more sophisticated, and their reliability becomes critical issues. Averagely, wind turbines have shut down for about a week per year for repairs and maintenance. Especially the high speed gearbox of DFIG is inevitable components for high power generation, but becomes one of the critical failures. In this paper, a new reliable gearless wind turbine structure is proposed. The gearless wind turbine can operate on a maximum power points by controlling the speed of a rotational stator. The proposed approach is verified by PSIM simulations, resulting in increased energy reliability.
