This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.

The selection of a site where strong wind blows is important to increase effectively the electricity of wind power in proportion to the cube of the wind speed. It is advisable to establish the wind turbine in the coastal area with strong wind speed rather than in the inland. And the development of offshore wind energy is expected to solve the noise problem that is one of the important weaknesses in the wind turbine. In the process of the development business of wind energy, knowing forehead the wind power possibility in any area is one of the essential factors to choose the most optimum site of wind power. In this paper, the potential of wind power around JeJu coastal area is examined by using the wind data that Korea Meteorological Administration has surveyed for 10 years in 14 observation points. Wind speed data is revised to wind speed in 80 meters assuming installation height of the wind turbine, and wind power density and annual wind energy are also calculated. And annual electricity generation and percent of energy efficiency in all the observation points are estimated by using the information about 3,000 KW wind turbine.

Wind turbine pitch/yaw bearings are relatively big and have different operating conditions like very heavy load to support compared with widely used industrial bearings. Once pitch/yaw bearings failed, according to their special surroundings, serious damages like higher repair costs and additional costs by stopped electricity generation are occur. Therefore, pitch/yaw bearings must be designed to have enough strength and fatigue life under actual operating conditions. In this study, with finite element analysis, it was investigated that stress distribution between rolling elements and raceway and comparatively analyzed using widely used guideline (NREL DG03). Design parameters of wind turbine pitch/yaw bearings are also analyzed, and it could be used as reference for the large bearing design field.

A wind generator system model includes wind model, rotor dynamics, synchronous generator, power converter, distribution line and infinite bus. This paper investigates the low-Voltage Ride-Through capability of PMSG wind turbine in a variable speed. The drive train of a wind turbine on 2-mass modeling can observe the shaft torsional vibration when the low-voltage occur. To reduce the torsional vibration when the low-voltage occur, this paper designs suppression control algorithm of the torsional vibration and implements simulation. The simulation based on MATLAB/SIMULINK has validated at the transient state of the PMSG and an experiment using 3kW simulator has validated the LVRT control.

In this paper, we present the estimation of wind turbine power generation using Cascade Architectures of Fuzzy Neural Networks(CAFNN). The proposed model uses the wind speed average, the standard deviation and the past output power as input data. The CAFNN identification process uses a 10-min average wind speed with its standard deviation. The method for rule-based fuzzy modeling uses Gaussian membership function. It has three fuzzy variables with three modifiable parameters. The CAFNN's configuration has three Logic Processors(LP) that are constructed cascade architecture and an effective optimization method uses two-level genetic algorithm. First, The CAFNN is trained with one-day average input variables. Once the CAFNN has been trained, test data are used without any update. The main advantage of using CAFNN is having simple structure of system with many input variables. Therefore, The proposed CAFNN technique is useful to predict the wind turbine(WT) power effectively and hence that information will be helpful to decide the control strategy for the WT system operation and application.

The aim of this paper is to present a method to obtain the dynamic response of a wind turbine tower in time domain by means of the generation of time series and to estimate the associated fatigue damage by means of a Rainflow counting algorithm. The proposed method is based on assuming the vortex shedding is a bidimensional phenomena and on following a classical modal superposition method to obtain the structure dynamic response. Four different wind turbine tower geometric configurations have been analyzed in a range of usual wind velocities and covering extreme wind velocities. The obtained results have shown that, depending on the turbulence intensity and the mean wind velocity, there are tower geometric configurations more advantageous from the fatigue load standpoint. Consequently, the presented model can be utilized to define assembly strategies oriented to fatigue damage minimization.
In recent years there has been a growing interest in renewable energy systems due to the environmental problem and the economic benefits of fuel savings. Such systems are usually connected to the existing power grid for "fuel displacement" purpose as well as of earning some "capacity credit". Wind power generation system(WPGS) is one of the most useful energy resource using natural environment. So far, it was very difficult to simulate the dispersed generation system including WPGS using EMTP or EMTDC because the source of the dispersed generation system has a particular wind power characteristic equation. In this paper, a novel simulation method of WPGS has proposed and a new wind turbine component for EMTDC is also developed. The wind power characteristic equation of wind turbine is used in order to realize the WPGS in EMTDC simulation. And the real field data of weather conditions is interfaced to EMTDC using Fortran program interface method. Consequently the simulation of WPGS using field data is realized in this paper and shows acceptable results.

Wind turbines causes instabilities on the grid as their penetration increase. To mitigate harmful effects from wind turbines, transmission system operator(TSO) set up some requirements to obligate for wind generation operator for grid connection. So wind farm management system(WFMS) has important role to follow requirement from TSO, WFMS calculates available real power by considering wake effects, and dispatches real power order to each wind turbine in wind farm to optimize for decreasing load fatigue. To verify operation of WFMS, real-time simulator(RTS) is necessary. This paper deals with RTS configuration to verify WFMS operation. RTS includes wind farm model and power flow code. Normally, wind farm equivalent simple model makes wind turbines in wind farm to one wind turbine mode which cannot verify power flow in wind farm and WFMS operation. Thus, this paper makes wind farm model using simple wind turbine model with transfer function. Matlab is used for make power flow code and wind farm model to impose RTS and those model is certified by PSCAD/EMTDC.
The use of the wind energy resource is a rapidly growing area world-wide. The number of installed units is continuously increasing, and therefore, it is important to respect and to deal with the impact of wind power generation system. From the view of an electric grid utility, there is a major problem with the impact of the wind system on the voltage of the electric grid, to which a turbine is connected. In this paper, it is investigated the voltage impact and transient state analysis on distribution line, with which wind power generation system is connected. Connections of wind power system usually occur to voltage drop due to reactive power absorption and sometime result in higher than nominal voltage.
In this paper, a sensorless pitch angle control method for a wind generation system is suggested. One-step-ahead prediction control law is adopted to control the pitch angle of a wind turbine in order for electric output power to track target values. And it is shown that this control scheme using the inverse dynamics of the controlled system enables us to predict current wind speed without an anemometer, to a considerable precision. The inverse input-output of the controlled system is realized by use of an artificial neural network. The proposed control and wind speed prediction method is applied to a Double-Feed Induction Generation system connected to a simple power system through computer simulation to show its effectiveness. The simulation results demonstrate that the suggested method shows better control performances with less control efforts than a conventional Proportional-Integral controller.
