  • In order to support wind power development in Jejudo, the island of winds, the wind resource database KIER-WindJeju has been established by meteor-statistical analysis on met-mast measurements of KIER. The analysis includes tower shading, exposure category, wind profile exponent for wind speed extrapolation to hub height of wind turbine, and correlation matrix between neighboring sites to assist choice of appropriate reference site for long-term correlation. KIER-WindJeju will be provided as an add-on of Google $Earth^{TM}$ and will be used as a guideline of future wind resource assessment in Jejudo.

  • In accordance with Madrid and Kyoto Protocols, a 10kw wind turbine installed about 625m away from the King Sejong Station in the Antarctica has been in operation successfully. The current location of the wind turbine has different geographic surroundings from the previous candidate site considered in 2005 and that makes re-evaluation of wind resource at the current site including geographic effects necessary. Especially, strong wind flow derived by steep and complex terrain is dominant in the Antarctica so that computational flow analysis is required. The wind rose measured at the previous and current installation location are identical with strong meteorological correlation but prevailing directions of wind power density are different because of local wind acceleration due to complex terrain. Numerical analysis explains which effects brings this discordance between the two sites, and a design guideline required for additional wind turbine installation has been secured.

  • In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.

  • A low-resolution national wind map, which is a prerequisite for setting up the national dissemination target and strategy of wind energy development, has been established by numerical wind simulation using the synoptic wind map, developed at the first stage, as an upper boundary condition. Based on the wind map, Wind Resource Information System has been composed in order to support scientific and systematic wind resource assessment and analysis.

  • In order to support the development of wind farms in Jejudo, a wind resource database for Jejudo has been established using a meteor-statistical analysis of KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) met-mast measurements and KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather data. The analysis included wind statistics, tower shading, an exposure category classification using satellite images, the effect of atmospheric stability on the wind profile exponent, and a correlation matrix of wind speed to gain an understanding of the meteorological correlation between long-term weather observation stations and short-term met-mast measurements. The wind resource database for Jejudo, is to be provided as an add-on to Google $Earth^{TM}$, which is expected to be utilized as a guideline for the selection of an appropriate reference site for long-term correction in the next wind farm development project.

  • An analysis of wind environments using computational fluid dynamics and an evaluation of wind resources using measurement data obtained from meteorological observation sites at Homi-Cape, Pohang have been carrid out for siting a wind farm. It was shown that a numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics would provide reliable wind resource map in complex terrain with land-sea breeze condition. As a result of this investigation, Homi-Cape wind farm with 11.25 ㎿ capacity has been designed for maximum power generation and 25.7 GWh electricity production is predicted.

  • As many researchers want to predict or assess more about wind condition and wind power generation, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis method is very good way to do predict or assess wind condition and power generation. But CFD analysis is needed much knowledge of aerodynamics and physical fluid theory. In this paper, Auto-Wind CFD analysis program will be introduced. User does not need specific knowledge of CFD or fluid theory. This program just needs topographical data and wind data for initial condition. Then all of process is running automatically without any order of user. And this program gives for user to select and set initial condition for advanced solving CFD. At the last procedure of solving, Auto-Wind program shows analysis of topography and wind condition of target area. Moreover, Auto-Wind can predict wind power generation with calculation in the program. This Auto-Wind analysis program will be good tool for many wind power researchers in real field.

  • The local wind systems in the Pohang region were categorized into wind sectors. Still, thorough knowledge of wind resource assessment, wind environment analysis, and atmospheric environmental impact assessment was required since the region has outstanding wind resources, it is located on the path of typhoon, and it has large-scale atmospheric pollution sources. To overcome the resolution limitation of meteorological dataset and problems of categorization criteria of the preceding studies, the high-resolution wind resource map of the Korea Institute of Energy Research was used as time-series meteorological data; the 2-step method of determining the clustering coefficient through hierarchical clustering analysis and subsequently categorizing the wind sectors through non-hierarchical K-means clustering analysis was adopted. The similarity of normalized time-series wind vector was proposed as the Euclidean distance. The meteor-statistical characteristics of the mean vector wind distribution and meteorological variables of each wind sector were compared. The comparison confirmed significant differences among wind sectors according to the terrain elevation, mean wind speed, Weibull shape parameter, etc.
