  • The main objective of this study is to predict the wind power generation at the wind farm using various wake models. Modeling of wind farm is a prerequisite for prediction of annual energy production at the wind farm. In this study, we modeled 20 MW class Seongsan wind farm which has 10 wind turbines located at the eastern part of Jeju Island. WindSim based on the computational fluid dynamics was adopted for the estimation of power generation. The power curve and thrust coefficient with meteorology file were prepared for wind farm modelling. The meteorology file was produced based on the measured data of the Korea Wind Atlas provided by Korea Institute of Energy Research. Three types of wake models such as Jensen, Larsen, and Ishihara et al. wake models were applied to investigate the wake effects. From the result, Jensen and Ishihara wake models show nearly the same value of power generation whereas the Larsen wake model shows the largest value. New positions of wind turbines are proposed to reduce the wake loss, and to increase the annual energy production of the wind farm.

  • In this study, the annual power production of a wind farm according to obstacles and wind data was predicted for the Garyeok-do wind farm in the Saemangeum area. The Saemangeum Garyeok-do wind farm was built in December 2014 by the Korea Rural Community Corporation. Currently, two 1.5 MW wind turbines manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries are installed and operated. Automatic weather station data from 2015 to 2017 was used as wind data to predict the annual power production of the wind farm for three consecutive years. For prediction, a commercial computational fluid dynamics tool known to be suitable for wind energy prediction in complex terrain was used. Predictions were made for three cases with or without considering obstacles and wind direction errors. The study found that by considering both obstacles and wind direction errors, prediction errors could be substantially reduced. The prediction errors were within 2.5 % or less for all three years.

  • As a part of effort to establish an offshore wind resource assessment system of the Korean Peninsula, a numeric wind simulation using mesoscale climate model MM5 and a spatial distribution of offshore wind extracted from SAR remote-sensing satellite image is compared and analyzed. According to the analyzed results, the numeric wind simulation is found to have wind speed over predication tendency at the coastal sea area. Therefore, it is determined that a high-resolution wind simulation is required for complicated coastal landforms. The two methods are verified as useful ways to identify the spatial distribution of offshore wind by mutual complementation and if the meteor-statistical comparative analysis is performed in the future using adequate number of satellite images, it is expected to derive a general methodology enabling systematic validation and correction of the numeric wind simulation.

  • The significance of renewable energy has been on the rise, as evidenced by the 3020 renewable energy plan and the 2050 carbon neutrality strategy, which seek to advance a low-carbon economy by implementing a power supply strategy centered around renewable energy sources. This study examines the wind resources on the west coast of South Korea and confirms the potential for wind power generation in the area. Wind speed data was collected from 22 automatic weather system stations and four light house automatic weather system stations provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration to evaluate potential sites for wind farms. Weibull distribution was used to analyze the wind data and calculate wind power density. Annual energy production and capacity factors were estimated for 15-20 MW-class large wind turbines through the height correction of observed wind speeds. These findings offer valuable information for selecting wind power generation sites, predicting economic feasibility, and determining optimal equipment capacity for future wind power generation sites in the region.

  • As a first step to develop the hybrid power generation system, on this study, the time-variable resources of wind and solar radiation of Yeongdo, Busan, Korea had been measured during June and July 2013. And the quantity of generated wind power and solar photovoltaic had also been measured during the same period. It is found out that the wind mainly flew from southwest at the average speed of 2 m/s during 2 months. And it is clear that, because of the low wind velocity, the wind quality to generate the power seems not enough at this area. Meanwhile solar radiation was measured every daytime (6:00~19:00) and the peak solar radiation occurred around 12:00~14:00. And it is clear that the time-based variations of quantity of generated power were proportional to the variations of these resources, respectively. As a proposal, these 2 natural energies can be combined as resources of a hybrid system, because these 2 patterns are not overlapped so much on time base.

  • To construct the wind map for mainland Korea, the well designed atmospheric numerical modeling system was used. Three nest domains were construced with spatial resolutions between $10{\times}10km$ up to the hightest resolution of $1{\times}1km$. Parameterization schemes like MRF(PBL), RRTM(radiation), Grell(cumulus) were chosen since wind data simulated is in better agreement with the observed wind data. High-resolution atmospheric numerical model was applied to simulate the motion of the atmosphere and to produce the wind map around the South Korea. The results of several simulations were improved compare to the past system, because of using the fine geographical data, such as terrain height and land-use data, and the meteorological data assimilation.

  • This paper will discuss the steps in building a wind farm and the modelling of AC power system for wind power generation. And take the JeJu island for an example, with its good wind power energy resource, the most important factor for a wind farm is a good power system interconnection to decrease the power loss including the transmission loss as less as possible. So in this paper, after the JEJU wind energy analysis, we will mainly discuss the development of the modelling on JEJU AC power system by using PSCAD. And also for using the real data of the wind power in the simulation, the modelling of the JeJu power system in 2011 will also be presented in this paper.

  • The exploitation of the wind energy resource is a rapidly growing area world-wide. The number of installed units is continuously increasing, and it is important to respect and to deal with the impact of wind turbine. This paper addresses the power quality characteristics of U57 Wind Turbine. 750kW gearless type wind turbine for low wind speed, named U57, is developed by UNISON. The power quality measurement system consists of measuring WTG output current, line-to line voltage and wind speed signal. With using measured data, power quality measurement is evaluated about maximum power, reactive power, voltage fluctuation, harmonics according to IEC 61400-21.

  • As the number of wind turbines installed increase, the power from wind energy starts to replace conventional generation units and its influence on power system can not be neglected. Because of the intermittent nature of wind resource, the output power of wind turbine fluctuates according to wind speed variation. In this point of view, it is necessary for wind turbines to be equipped with power regulation ability. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is one of the main techniques used in variable speed wind turbines. This thesis focuses on the development of modified control scheme of DFIG to regulate output power. The proposed control scheme achieves active power output regulation so as to stabilize the power system.

  • Wind power energy harvesting has a big potential as a future clean energy resource, but accompanies infrasonic noises. The infrasound is difficult to shield and can induce various negative physiological effects. In this study, the Wind Turbine Syndrome (WTS) caused by the infrasonic noises are introduced, and the technical aspects for the measurement and management of the infrasonic noises from wind power plants are discussed.
