Surface protrusions have been attached on a cylinder surface to reduce the flow-induced structural vibration by controlling the wake flow. Wind tunnel tests on the near wake of a circular cylinder with surface protrusions were carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of the controlled wake. Three experimental models were used in this experiment; one plain cylinder of diameter D and two cylinders wrapped helically by three small wires of diameter d=0.075D with pitches of 5D and 10D, respectively. Free stream velocity was ranged to have Reynolds number from 5000 to 50,000. Streamwise and vertical velocity components of the wake were measured by a hot-wire anemometry. The spanwise velocity component measured by a one-component fiber optic LDV revealed that time-averaged wake field has a nearly two-dimensional structure. It was found that the surface protrusions elongate the vortex formation region, which decrease the vortex shedding frequency. The suppression of vortices caused by the surface protrusions increases the velocity deficit in the center of wake region.
It is necessary to examine the source contributions and the relationship between a receptor and sources for the resonable controlling of air pollution level of suspended particulate matters. Therefore, in this study, profiles of sources contributing to the concentration of suspended particulate matters, were developed and CMB model was applied to obtain information of source contributions and feasibility of CMB model application. According to the propose of this study, twenty-seven chemical species such as the elements, anions, and total carbon of thirty-six PMl0 and TSP data sets sampled at the Pomch'on receptor site in Pusan for a 24-hr period from May to Aug. 1992, were analyzed and three (transportation, soil, marine) different source profiles were developed through the field measurement. Applying CMB model to transportation, soil, marine, the results of source contribution by CMB model showed that the case with TSP was more suitable for CMB model than that with PMl0. And the average contribution of transportation source to TSP and PMlo concentration at Pomch'on receptor was calculated as 90.66 ㎍/m3(64%) and 23.27 ㎍/m3(39%), resfiectively, which showed that the contribution by transportation was dominant. The validation of CMB model was performed by means of the results of contributions from marine source for the wind direction sectors.

The state-of-art third generation wave prediction model WAM was applied to the Korean seas for a winter monsoon period of January 1997. The wind field used in the present study is the global NSCAT-ERS/NCEP blended winds, which was further interpolated using a bi-cubic spline interpolator to fine grid limited area shallow water regime surrounding the Korean seas. To evaluate and investigate the accuracy of WAM, the hindcasted wave heights are compared with observed data from two shallow water buoys off Chil-Bal and Duk-Juk. A detailed study has been carried with the various meteorological parameters in observed buoy data and its inter-dependency on model computed wave fields was also investigated. The RMS error between the observation and model computed wave heights results to 0.489 for Chil-Bal and 0.417 for Duk-Juk. A similar comparison between the observation and interpolated winds off Duk-Juk show RMS error of 2.28 which suggest a good estimate for wave modelling studies.

Most of experimental visualizations and numerical results on the flow field separated form a leading edge around an unsteady foil show a continuous streakline from the leading edge and large reverse flow between the streakline and the suction surface. However, they have not exactly clarified yet the dynamic behavior of vortices separated from the leading edge because separation around an unsteady foil is very complicated phenomenon due to many parameters. In the present study the flow fields around pitching foils have been visualized by using a Schlieren method with a high speed camera in a wind tunnel at low Reynolds number regions. It has been observed that small vortices are shed discretely from the leading and trailing edge and that they stand in line on the integrated streakline of separation shear layer. By counting vortices in the VTR frames it was clarified that the number of vortex shedding from the leading and trailing edge during one pitching cycle strongly depends on the non-dimensional pitching rate. Futhermore the vortices moving up to the leading edge on the suction surface of the pitching foil are visualized. They play an important role to balance the number of vortex shedding from both edges.

Planetary gear box is a power transmitter having very high gear ratio in compact volume. The planetary step-down gear box converts high speed and low torque into low speed and high torque, which is widely used in constructional and industrial machinery field. And, the planetary step-up gear box does vice versa working, which is used as main gear box of large sized wind mill system. The large sized planetary gear box must be performed the normal-opposite rotation test as a its durability test for achieving the reliability. The large sized planetary gear box is composed by triple gear trains of sun gear, carrier, and ring gear. If input power is supplied into one of them and the other is fixed, and then another becomes the output part. In this paper, we designed a new test equipment which can do rapid normal and opposite rotational change with only small displacement by supplying test power using the above rotation (driving) characteristics and hydraulic cylinder and link, and also compared and analyzed with existing method through various experiments.

A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code has been developed for analysis of viscous flows through turbomachinery blade rows or other internal passages. The Navier-Stokes equations are written in a cartesian coordinate system, then mapped to a general body-fitted coordinate system. Streamwise viscous terms are neglected and turbulent effects are modeled using the baldwin-Lomax model. Equations are discretized using finite difference method on the stacked C-type grids and solved using LU-ADI decomposition scheme. calculations are made for a two-dimensional cascade in a transonic wind-tunnel to see the infuence of the endwalls. The flow pattern of the three-dimensional flow near the endwall is found to be different from that of the two-dimensional flow due to the existence of the endwalls.
Purpose: This study was performed to predict the fatigue life of a crank-type rotavator operated in domestic soil conditions using Recurdyn$^{(R)}$, a dynamic analysis program. Methods: Torque on the PTO shaft was measured using experiments conducted on the uplands and paddy fields in Korea. On the basis of the experimental and analytical results, the fatigue life of the crank-type rotavator was predicted by constructing an S-N curve according to the GL (Germanischer Lloyd Wind Energie GmbH) guideline. Results: The torques experienced by the PTO shaft in the paddy soil and the uplands were in the range of 472~797 N m and 313~430 N m, respectively, for every condition. In case of load condition, the peak torques (846 N m, 770 N m) were applied for severe conditions, resulting in a maximum (von Mises) stress of 75 MPa at the crank arm. The fatigue life of the crank-type rotavator was predicted to be 1,167 h that satisfies the target value of 1,110 h, by substituting the analysis results into an S-N curve of crank arm. Conclusions: The fatigue life of the crank-type rotavator was within the target life for the studied soil conditions; however, further field experiments for various soil conditions would be required to verify the prediction results.

A wind tunnel experiment for the flow around a 1/5 scale passenger vehicle model has been carried out. A 5-hole Pitot tube is used for measuring velocity distributions around the model and a scanivalve with 48 ports is used for measuring surface pressure distribution at various Reynolds numbers. In order to observe the flow on the surface and in the wake region, a flow visualization experiment has been performed using wool tuft with and without paper cones. In addition, a 2-dimensional viscous calculation considering only the mid-plane section of the model has been performed. A complex wake structure in the immediate rear of the model has been confirmed. The distributions of the surface pressure coefficient are not sensitively dependent on the Reynolds Number. In the first half of the model, they do not seem to vary form section to section. However, in the second half, they do vary from section to section, especially at the bottom surface, which indicates that the cross flow vortex is more affected by the bottom surface than the top surface. The qualitative agreement of the measured and calculated velocity field also explains the usefulness of the 2-dimensional calculation in the limited sense.

A shock wave, being an irreversible process, gives rise to entropy increase. A great deal of effort has been made to control shock wave and boundary layer interaction related to energy losses as well as problems of vibration and noise. In the present study, tests are performed on a roof mounted half circular arc in an indraft type supersonic wind tunnel to evaluate the effects of porosity, length and depth of cavity in passive control of shock wave on the attenuation of shock strength by reviewing the measured static pressures at the porous wall and cavity. Also the flow field is visualized by a Schlieren system. The results show that in the present study the porosity of 8% produced the largest reduction of pressure fluctuations and that for the same porosity, the strength of shock wave decreases with the increasings of the depth and length of cavity.

A passive control of interaction of condensation shock wave / boundary layer for reducing the strength of condensation shock was conducted experimentally in a 2.5 * 8 cm$^{2}$ indraft type supersonic wind tunnel. The effects of following factors on passive control were investigated: 1) the thickness of porous wall, 2) the diameter of porous hole, and 3) the orientation of porous hole. On the other hand, the location of nonequilibrium condensation region and condensation shock wave was controlled by regulation of the stagnation conditions. Surface static pressure measurements as well as Schlieren observations of the flow field were obtained, and their effects were compared with the results the cases of without passive control. It was found that thinner porous wall, smaller porous hole and FFH orientation for the same cavity size and porosity of 12% are more favourable than the cases of its opposite.
