The primary challenge in improving fuel efficiency and reducing air pollution for commercial vehicles is reducing their aerodynamic drag. Various flow control devices, such as cab-roof fairing, gap fairing, cab extender, and side skirt have been introduced to reduce drag, however, the drag reduction effect and applicability are different depending on each commercial vehicle model. To evaluate the fuel consumption of heavy vehicles, a comprehensive research approach, including drag force measurement, flow field analysis is required. This study investigated the effect of a cab extender, which installed rear region of cab, on a drag coefficient of commercial vehicle through wind tunnel experiments and CFD. The results showed that the cab extender significantly modified the flow structure around the vehicle, leading to 8.2% reduction in drag coefficient compared to the original vehicle model. These results would provide practical application for enhancing the aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency of heavy vehicle.
This presentation introduces Korea's SNIPE (Small scale magNespheric and Ionospheric Plasma Experiment) mission, formation flying CubeSat constellation. Observing particles and waves on a single satellite suffers from inherent space-time ambiguity. To observe spatial and temporal variations of the micro-scale plasma structures on the topside ionosphere, four 6U CubeSats (~ 10 kg) will be launched into a polar orbit of the altitude of ~500 km in 2021. The distances of each satellite will be controlled from 10 km to more than 100 km by formation flying algorithm. The SNIPE mission is equipped with identical scientific instruments, solid-state telescope, magnetometer, and Langmuir probe. All the payloads have a high temporal resolution (sampling rates of about 10 Hz). Iridium modules provide an opportunity to upload changes in operational modes when geomagnetic storms occur. SNIPE's observations of the dimensions, occurrence rates, amplitudes, and spatiotemporal evolution of polar cap patches, field-aligned currents (FAC), radiation belt microbursts, and equatorial and mid-latitude plasma blobs and bubbles will determine their significance to the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction and quantify their impact on space weather.

It has been widely acknowledged that climate system associated with extreme rainfall events was difficult to understand and extreme rainfall simulation in climate model was more difficult. This study developed a new model for extracting rainfall filed associated with extreme events as a way to characterize large scale climate system. Main interests are to derive location, size and direction of the rainfall field and this study developed an algorithm to extract the above characteristics from global climate data set. This study mainly utilized specific humidity and wind vectors driven by NCEP reanalysis data to define the rainfall field. Geometric first and second moments have been extensively employed in defining the rainfall field in selected zone, and an ellipsoid based model were finally introduced. The proposed geometric moments based ellipsoid model works equally well with regularly and irregularly distributed synthetic grid data. Finally, the proposed model was applied to space-time real rainfall filed. It was found that location, size and direction of the rainfall field was successfully extracted.

The ship radiated noise level fluctuates by the interference between direct and reflected paths. The effect of sea surface reflection path on interference depends strongly on sea surface roughness. This paper describes error characteristics of ship acoustic signature estimation by sea surface scattering effect. The coherent reflection coefficient which explains a magnitude of sea surface scattering and its resultant interference acoustic field is analyzed quantitatively as a function of a grazing angle, effective surface height, frequency, source-receiver range and depths of source and receiver. Theoretical interference acoustic field is compared with experimental result for two different sea surfaces and five different frequencies by changing source-receiver range. It is found that both matches well each other and a magnitude of interference acoustic field is decreasing by increasing a grazing angle, effective surface height, frequency, and depths of source and receiver and decreasing source-receiver range. For given experimental conditions, the transmission anomaly which is a bias error of ship acoustic signature estimation, is about a range of 1~3 dB. The bias error of an existing ship radiated noise measurement system is also analyzed considering wind speed, source depth and frequency.

The recent advancements in sensing technologies allow us to record measurements from target structures at multiple locations and with relatively high spatial resolution. Such measurements can be used to develop data-driven methodologies for condition assessment, control, and health monitoring of target structures. One of the state-of-the-art technologies, Fiber Optic Strain Sensors (FOSS), is developed at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, and is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. These strain sensors are accurate, lightweight, and can provide almost continuous strain-field measurements along the length of the fiber. The strain measurements can then be used for real-time shape-sensing and operational load-estimation of complex structural systems. While several works have demonstrated the successful implementation of FOSS on large-scale real-life aerospace structures (i.e., airplane wings), there is paucity of studies in the literature that have investigated the potential of extending the application of FOSS into civil structures (e.g., tall buildings, bridges, etc.). This work assesses the feasibility of using FOSS to predict operational loads (e.g., wind loads) on chain-like structures. A thorough investigation is performed using analytical, computational, and experimental models of a 4-story steel building test specimen, developed at the University of Southern California. This study provides guidelines on the implementation of the FOSS technology on building-like structures, addresses the associated technical challenges, and suggests potential modifications to a load-estimation algorithm, to achieve a robust methodology for predicting operational loads using strain-field measurements.

Class A evaporation pan has been used throughout the world to measure free water evaporation mainly by manual observation once a day. In this study, a new automatic water level measurement method is used for understanding of free water evaporation and numerical analysis. This new technique measures the weight of buoyancy bar in water, and does not need calibration because it is not affected by water density change with water temperature. Field observations of evaporation were made near Haenam Meteorological Station over paddy field located in southwestern Korea from 20 April to 30 May 2004 and the data from ten clear days (16 - 25 May) were used for this analysis. The observed total evaporation was about 50.7mm during this period whereas the estimated from an empirical equation was 50.4mm. As expected, the pan evaporation is well correlated with wind speed and the vapor pressure deficit between the water surface and the air.
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the long-term performance of various concrete composites in natural marine environment prevailing in the Gulf region. Durability assessment studies of such nature are usually carried out under aggressive environments that constitute seawater, chloride and sulfate laden soils and wind, and groundwater conditions. These studies are very vital for sustainable development of marine and off shore reinforced concrete structures of industrial design such as petroleum installations. First round of testing and evaluation, which is presented in this paper, were performed by standard tests under laboratory conditions. Laboratory results presented in this paper will be corroborated with test outcome of ongoing three years field exposure conditions. The field study will include different parameters of investigation for high performance concrete including corrosion inhibitors, type of reinforcement, natural and industrial pozzolanic additives, water to cement ratio, water type, cover thickness, curing conditions, and concrete coatings. Like the laboratory specimens, samples in the field will be monitored for corrosion induced deterioration signs and for any signs of failureover initial period ofthree years. In this paper, laboratory results pertaining to microsilica (SF), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), epoxy coated rebars and calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitor are very conclusive. Results affirmed that the supplementary cementing materials such as GGBS and SF significantly impacted and enhanced concrete resistivity to chloride ions penetration and hence decrease the corrosion activities on steel bars protected by such concretes. As for epoxy coated rebars applications under high chloride laden conditions, results showed great concern to integrity of the epoxy coating layer on the bar and its stability. On the other hand corrosion inhibiting admixtures such as calcium nitrite proved to be more effective when used in combination with the pozzolanic additives such as GGBS and microsilica.

This paper deals with a bearing faults localization technique based on holographic approach by visualizing sound radiated from the faults. The main idea stems from the phenomenon that bearing faults in a moving vehicle generate impulsive sound. To visualize fault signal from the moving vehicle, we can use the moving frame acoustic holography [H.-S. Kwon and Y.-H. Kim, "Moving frame technique for planar acoustic holography," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103(4), 1734-1741, 1998]. However, it is not easy to localize faults only by applying the method. This is because the microphone array measures noise (for example, noise from other parts of the vehicle and the wind noise) as well as the fault signal while the vehicle passes by the array. To reduce the effect of noise, we propose two ideas which utilize the characteristics of fault signal. The first one is to average holograms for several frequencies to reduce the random noise. The second one is to apply the partial field decomposition algorithm [K.-U. Nam, Y.-H. Kim, "A partial field decomposition algorithm and its examples for near-field acoustic holography," J. of Acoust. Soc. Am. 116(1), 172-185, 2004] to the moving source, which can separate the fault signal and noise. Basic theory of those methods is introduced and how they can be applied to localize bearing faults is demonstrated. Experimental results via a miniature vehicle showed how well the proposed method finds out the location of source in practice.
Interactions between the galactic interstellar medium (ISM) and the intra cluster medium (ICM) are believed to be one of the main processes affecting galaxy evolution in cluster environments. The aim of our research is to study the molecular gas properties of a galaxy under the ICM pressure in the cluster environment. It has been well known that cluster galaxies are deficient in atomic hydrogen gas (HI gas) compared to their field counterparts and now there is much evidence that low density ISM is being removed by ram pressure due to ICM wind. Meanwhile, no significant molecular gas deficiency of the cluster galaxy population has been found yet they show overall lower star formation rate than galaxies in the field, and it is still puzzling how the star formation could decrease without stripping of dense molecular gas. To address this issue, we probe the detailed molecular gas properties of NGC 4402, located near the cluster center, as part of a study of four spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. NGC 4402 is well known undergoing ram pressure stripping with a truncated HI disk($D_{HI}/D_{opt}$ - 0.75 and only 36% of HI gas compare to field galaxies of a similar size) and a disturbed gas morphology. Comparing the high resolution 12CO and 13CO data of NGC 4402 from the Sub Millimeter Array (SMA) with existing other wavelength data, we probe the spatial distribution and a physical condition of molecular gas under strong ICM pressure. We discuss the star formation activity might have been altered and hence how the global color of NGC4402 would change in the future.

An experimental study has been conducted to elucidate the effect of AC electric field on behaviors of laminar lifted flame in nitrogen-diluted methane coflow-jets. Our concerns are focued on the regime to show a decrease in liftoff height, $H_L$ with increasing nozzle exit velocity, $U_O$ (hereafter, $decreasing-H_L$). The $H_L$ with $U_O$ near flame extinction were measured by varying the applied AC voltage, $V_{AC}$ and frequency, $f_{AC}$ in a single electrode configuration. The behavior of $H_L$ with a functional dependency of $V_{AC}$ and $f_{AC}$ was categorized into two regime : (I) $H_L$ decreased for nozzle diameter, D = 1.0 mm, and (II) $H_L$ increased in the increase of $f_{AC}$ for a fixed $V_{AC}$ in a D = 4.0, 8.4 mm. The lifted flames in $decreasing-H_L$ region was unstable in high voltage regimes while the $H_L$ showed a decreasing tendency with $U_O$ except them. Such behaviors in $H_L$ were also characterized by functional dependencies of related physical parameters such as $V_{AC}$, $f_{AC}$, $U_O$, fuel mole fraction ($X_{F.O}$) and D.
