  • Saemankeum is well known for its high speed wind, and it is known that the blueprint of a future city around Saemankeum, including new industrial complex, has been planned. As a result, large-scale offshore wind farm, on the basis of the measurement of wind resource for a long time, can be considered, so that generated electricity can be used to meet the energy demand near the wind farm. Wind speed in Kokunsando of Saemankeum is measured and analyzed with its statistical distribution and wind directions. The probability of wind power resource over Kokunsando of Saemangeum is reviewed with the measured data in one island of Kokunsando. According to measured data, the shape and scale factor of Weibull distribution of wind speed are obtained, and then power density is analyzed as well. Through this study, it is clear that the Saemangeum area has a fluent and abundant wind power source to develop the wind farm in Korea.

  • This paper details a method for establishing a wind energy map having($1Km{\times}1Km$) resolution. The map is essential for measurement and efficiency-testing of wind energy resources and wind site analysis. To this end, a statistical wind field model is estimated that covers 345,682 regions obtained by $1Km{\times}1Km$ lattices made over South Korea. The paper derives various characteristics of a regional wind energy resource under the statistical wind field model and estimates them to construct the wind energy map. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, based on TMY(typical meteorological year) wind data of 76 weather station areas, shows that a Log-normal model is adequate for the statistical wind field model. The model is estimated by using the wind speed data of 345,682 regions provided by the National Institute of Meteorological Research(NIMR). Various wind energy statistics are studied under the Log-normal wind field model. As an application, the wind energy density(W$/m^2$) map of South Korea is constructed with a resolution of $1Km{\times}1Km$ and its utility for the wind site analysis is discussed.

  • In this study, wind conditions and its energy potential have been assessed by conducting a Weibull analysis of the wind speed data (over the period of 2002-2011) measured from a port city (Mongla) and an isolated island (Sandwip) in Bangladesh. The monthly mean wind speed at Mongla ranged from 1.60 m/s (December) to 2.47 m/s (April). The monthly values of Weibull shape parameter (k) were from 1.27 to 2.53. In addition, the values of the scale parameter (c) and the monthly wind power density ranged from 1.76 to 2.79 m/s and 3.95 to $17.45W/m^2$, respectively. The seasonal mean wind speed data varied from 1.72 (fall) to 2.29 m/s (spring) with the wind power density from 5.33 (fall) to $14.26W/m^2$ (spring). In the case of Sandwip, the results were comparable to those of Mongla, but moderate reductions in all the comparable variables were observed. The wind data results of these two areas have been compared with those of eight other locations in the world with respect to wind power generation scale. According to this comparison, the wind power generation scale for Mongla and Sandwip was adequate for stand-alone small/micro-scale applications such as local household consumption, solar-wind hybrid irrigation pumps, and battery charging.

  • This study purposed to predict wind energy for small size wind power generators at 50m above the ground in each area using mean wind speed data for 10 minutes collected from 2001 to 2011 by meteorological data in large cities having over 60% of 15 story (50m) or higher apartments including Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju and Daegu representing the inland region, and Busan, Incheon and Ulsan representing the coastal region. In the results of analysis, we confirmed close agree ment between observatory weather data and probability density distribution obtained using Weibull's parameters, and this suggests that Weibull's parameter is applicable to the estimation of wind energy. Hourly output energy using the mean wind speed for 10 minutes and output energy obtained from Weibull's parameter showed an error less than 5%, and thus it was found that wind energy can be evaluated using Weibull's modulus.

  • The installed capacity of wind turbines in KOREA are growing and enlarging by the central government's support program. Thus, the importance of power performance verification and its uncertainty analysis are recognizing rapidly. This paper described the power testing results of a 3MW wind turbine and analysed an uncertainty level of measurements. The measured power curves are very closely coincide with the calculated one and the annual power production under the given Rayleigh wind speed distribution are estimated with the 3.6~12.7% of uncertainty but, in the dominant wind speed region as 7~8m/s, the uncertainty are stably decreased to 6.3~5.3%.

  • The wind-power among the new and renewable energies uses the wind, a limitless, clean and pure energy which is available at any place. It requires low installation cost compared to the generation of other renewable energies, and is easy to operate, and furthermore, can be automated for operation. Korea has been taking a great deal of interest in the development of renewable energy generating equipment, specifically wind power generation as the nation has a nearly total reliance on imported petroleum. A measuring poll 30m high was installed at a location with an altitude of 142m above the sea level in order to measure and analyze the wind power potentiality at H University's Asan Campus, and the wind velocity and wind direction were measured for 1 year. As for the wind power resource of the area adjacent to Asan campus, the Weibull Distribution coefficient was C=2.68, K =1.29 at H30m. Weibull Distribution coefficient was modified on the basis of compensated wind velocity (=3.1m/s) at H 60m, and the energy density was $42W/m^2$. AEP 223,750 KWh was forecast based on the simulation of an 800KW grade wind turbine. It is considered that the wind power generation has to be studied further in the inland zone with low wind velocity to cope with the possible exhaustion of fossil fuel and ensure a sustainable environmental preservation.

  • New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.

  • This paper reviews three commercial softwares for wind climate data analysis in wind resource assessment; WAsP/Observed Wind Climate, WindRose and Windographer. Windographer is evaluated as the best software because of its variety of input data format, analysis functions, easiness of user interface, etc. For a quantitative understanding of uncertainty depending on software selection, a benchmark is carried out with the met-mast observation dataset at the Gimnyeong Wind Turbine Performance Test Site. It is found that Weibull parameter calculation and air density correction have a dependency on the software so that such uncertainty should be considered when an analysis software is selected. It is confirmed that annual energy production calculated by WAsP using a statistical table of frequency of occurrence may have some error compared to a time-series calculation method used by the other softwares.
