This paper describes the cycloidal wind turbine, which is a straight blade vertical axis wind turbine using the cycloidal blade system. Cycloidal blade system consists of several blades rotating about an axis in parallel direction. Each blade changes its pitch angle periodically. Cycloidal wind turbine is different from the previous turbines. The wind turbine operates with optimum rotating forces through active control of the blade to change pitch angle and phase angle according to the changes of wind direction and wind speed. Various numerical experiments were conducted to develop a small vertical axis wind turbine of 1 kW class. For this numerical analysis, the rotor system equips four blades consisting of a symmetric airfoil NACA0018 of 1.0m in span, 0.22m in chord and 1.0m in radius. A general purpose commercial CFD program, STAR-CD, was used for numerical analysis. PCL of MSC/PATRAN was used for efficient parametric auto mesh generation. Variables of wind speed, pitch angle, phase angle and rotating speed were set in the numerical experiments. The generated power was obtained according to the various combinations of these variables. Optimal pitch angle and phase angle of cycloidal blade system were obtained according to the change of the wind direction and the wind speed. Based on data obtained from the above analysis, control device was designed. The wind direction and the wind speed were sensed by a wind indicator and an anemometer. Each blades were actuated to optimal performance values by servo motors.

The paper presents a simulation model and analysis of a grid-connected variable speed wind energy conversion scheme (VSWECS) using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. The modeled system uses a variable speed drive, a fixed pitch angle, a synchronous generator as a wind generator and an AC-DC-AC conversion scheme, which facilitates the wind generation to efficiently operate under varying wind speed while connected to the distribution network. The power output of the WECS is controlled by the AC-DC-AC conversion scheme, the objective of which is to capture the maximum active power under varying wind conditions and to keep the voltage magnitude of the terminal bus at a specific level. Aerodynamic models are applied for a wind turbine model. An simulation analysis of the scheme in terms of its responding to wind variations is also presented.
Since its development in the early 1980's the force balance technique has become a standard method in the efficient determination of structural loads and responses. Its usefulness lies in the simplicity of the physical model, the relatively short records required from the wind tunnel testing and its versatility in the use of the data for different sets of dynamic properties. Its major advantage has been the ability to provide results in a timely manner, assisting the structural engineer to fine-tune their building at an early stage of the structural development. The analysis of the wind tunnel data has evolved from the simple un-coupled system to sophisticated methods that include the correction for non-linear mode shapes, the handling of complex geometry and the handling of simultaneous measurements on multiple force balances for a building group. This paper will review some of the components in the force balance data analysis both in historical perspective and in its current advancement. The basic formulation of the force balance methodology in both frequency and time domains will be presented. This includes all coupling effects and allows the determination of the resultant quantities such as resultant accelerations, as well as various load effects that generally were not considered in earlier force balance analyses. Using a building model test carried out in the wind tunnel as an example case study, the effects of various simplifications and omissions are discussed.
To gain insight into the wind-induced safety concerns associated with attached tower cranes during the construction of super-tall buildings, a 606 m level frame-core tube super-tall building is selected to investigate the wind-induced vibration response and fragility of an outer-attached tower crane at all stages of construction. The wind velocity time history samples are artificially generated and used to perform dynamic response analyses of the crane to observe the effects of wind velocity and wind direction under its working and non-working resting state. The adverse effects of the relative displacement response at different connection supports are also identified. The wind-resistant fragility curves of the crane are obtained by introducing the concept of incremental dynamic analysis. The results from the investigation indicate that a large relative displacement between the supports can substantially amplify the response of the crane at high levels. Such an effect becomes more serious when the lifting arm is perpendicular to the plane of the connection supports. The flexibility of super-tall buildings should be considered in the design of outer-attached tower cranes, especially for anchorage systems. Fragility analysis can be used to specify the maximum appropriate height of the tower crane for each performance level.
Using the wind, we can get a thermal comfort in summer. In winter we must shut out the wind. To achieve sustainable environmental building design, especially wind data is very important. The wind direction and wind velocity of 32 cities were analyzed to suggest the wind map of Korea. The weather data which was used in this paper was from National Weather Service(19711.1~2000.12.31). The results of this study are 1) The monthly wind velocity of Seoul is 1.1m/s-3.8m/s. 2) The maximum wind velocity could be estimated from the annual average wind velocity. The regression curve is Y(The maximum wind velocity)=6.369732 X(annual average wind velocity) + 6.391668 (P< 9.66E-12). 3) The wind velocity at the inland area which is far from 25km sea side is smaller than coastal area. The distance from the sea is major index of wind velocity. 4) The monthly wind direction was compared inland area with coastal area. 5) The uniform-velocity line on the Korean map was obtained.
To evaluate the wind shielding effect of bridge towers with multiple limbs on high-speed trains, a wind tunnel test was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicles traversing multi-limb towers, which represented a combination of the steady aerodynamic coefficient of the vehicle-bridge system and wind environment around the tower. Subsequently, the analysis model of wind-vehicle-bridge (WVB) system considering the additional moments caused by lift and drag forces under nonuniform wind was proposed, and the reliability and accuracy of the proposed model of WVB system were verified using another model. Finally, the factors influencing the wind shielding effect of multi-limb towers were analyzed. The results indicate that the wind speed distributions along the span exhibit two sudden changes, and the wind speed generally decreases with increasing wind direction angle. The pitching and yawing accelerations of vehicles under nonuniform wind loads significantly increase due to the additional pitching and yawing moments. The sudden change values of the lateral and yawing accelerations caused by the wind shielding effect of multi-limb tower are 0.43 m/s2 and 0.11 rad/s2 within 0.4 s, respectively. The results indicate that the wind shielding effect of a multi-limb tower is the controlling factor in WVB systems.
A model is proposed to analyse the along-wind dynamic response of upwind turbines with horizontal axis under service wind conditions. The model takes into account the dynamic coupling effect between rotor blades and supporting tower. The wind speed field is decomposed into a mean component, accounting for the well-known wind shear effect, and a fluctuating component, treated through a spectral approach. Accordingly, the so-called rotationally sampled spectra are introduced for the blades to account for the effect of their rotating motion. Wind forces acting on the rotor blades are calculated according to the blade element momentum model. The tower shadow effect is also included in the present model. Two examples of a large and medium size wind turbines are modelled, and their dynamic response is analysed and compared with the results of a conventional static analysis.

The long-term wind data are reconstructed from the short-term meteorological data to design the 4 MW offshore wind park which will be constructed at Woljeong-ri, Jeju island, Korea. Using two MCP (Measure-Correlate-Predict) models, the relative deviation of wind speed and direction from two neighboring reference weather stations can be regressed at each azimuth sector. The validation of the present method is checked about linear and matrix MCP models for the sets of measured data, and the characteristic wind turbulence is estimated from the ninety-percent percentile of standard deviation in the probability distribution. Using the Gumbel's model, the extreme wind speed of fifty-year return period is predicted by the reconstructed long-term data. The predicted results of this analysis concerning turbulence intensity and extreme wind speed are used for the calculation of fatigue life and extreme load in the design procedure of wind turbine structures at offshore wind farms.

High-rise buildings constructed adjacent to low-rise structures experience frequent damage caused by the associated strong wind. This study aimed to implement a standard evaluation of the wind environment and airflow characteristics around high-rise apartment blocks using wind tunnel tests (WTT) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The correlation coefficient between the CFD and wind tunnel results ranged between 0.6-0.8. Correlations below 0.8 were due to differences in the wake flow area range generated behind the target building according to wind direction angle and the effect of the surrounding buildings. In addition, a difference was observed between the average velocity ratio of the wake flow wind measured by the WTT and by the CFD analysis. The wind velocity values of the CFD analysis were therefore compensated, and, consequently, the correlations for most wind angles increased.

The possibility of whether the induced wind from a vehicle traveling on highway can be used in wind power generation has been verified through computational flow analysis. The bus which is presumed to accompany relatively strong and wide range of induced wind compared to passenger vehicles because of its wide frontal area has been set as the subject of research. In order to ensure the reliability of research, the flow analysis surrounding the bus on a flat road where median strip is not installed has been compared with a preceding research while the validity of grid system and interpretation method used in this research have been assured by a qualitative method. In case of the median strip type wind power generator system, because it has been verified that a strong streamwise wind speed (5 m/s) is derived from the contraction effect of flow passage between the bus and the median strip while maintaining a relatively consistent upwind wind speed (1.4 m/s) in vertical direction in the wake area after the bus passes by although the change of wind speed is intense, it was decided as having some possibility of wind power generation. In case of the traffic sign panel type wind power generator system installed at the upper top of highway, because the wind speed of 2 m/s level has been derived for a limited time only at a section equal to the length of the bus and a faint induced wind speed less than 0.5 m/s was shown at other regions, it was decided as having almost no possibility of wind power generation.
