An Exploratory Study on the Effect of Price as an Anchor on Willingness-to-pay: Anchoring-and-adjustment or Selective Accessibility

  • The two competing underlying mechanisms of anchoring, anchoring-and-adjustment and selective accessibility, have very different managerial implications for the effect of price as an anchor on willingness-to-pay (WTP). To clarify their relative roles in inducing the anchoring effect, path analysis modeling in which two paths are included in a single model was utilized. The first path proceeds directly from anchor price to WTP, representing anchor-and-adjustment. The second path, representing selective accessibility, includes a mediator formed by various explanatory variables of WTP. The results consistently show that only the direct path, anchoring-and-adjustment, is significant. The results also show that the level of available product information has no significant moderation effect on both of the paths, which implies the robustness of the result with respect to information level.

Measuring Landscape Value of Jeju Island's Stonewall Fencing Farming Land for the Introduction of Direct Payment System of the Landscape Preservation (경관보전직불제 도입을 위한 제주밭담의 경관가치 평가)

  • The dichotomous-choice contingent valuation method is applied to estimate the landscape value of Jeju Island's stonewall fencing farming land. A distribution-free approach, Turnbull empirical distribution model, is employed to solve negative willingness to pay and truncation problems. The data used are collected from the interviews with tourist about willingness-to-pay at the various donation amount levels of Jeju stonewall's landscape value. The evaluation result is shown that the average amount of willingness to pay for the Jeju stonewall fencing farming land is 3,001 won per meter with standard deviation of 511.0 won/m.

Valuation of Use Value on Environmental Goods (환경자원의 이용가치 평가)

  • The contingent valuation method uses survey questions to elicit people's preferences for public goods by finding out what they would be willing to pay for specified improvement in them. The method is thus aimed at eliciting their willingness to pay in money amounts. It circumvents the absence of markets for public goods by presenting consumers with hypothetical markets in which they have the opportunities to buy the good In question. The hypothetical markets may be modeled after either a private goods market or a political market. Respondents are presented with material, often in the course of a personal interview conducted face to face. An on-site survey was conducted to 1107 randomly selected P-mountain users using a dichotomous choice questionnaire for the contingent valuation method. Seventeen different bid sets were chosen ranging from the lowest bid of 300won to the highest bid of 2, 100won to elicit a reasonable entrance fee in the hypothetical market. The probability of an individual user's willingness to pay for the suggested bid had been determined, and the expected value of willingness to pay was estimated using binary-1ogit model. The average public value of P-mountain per individual user was estimated to be 1,055.92won ~ 1,995.61won according to the binary-logit model. The economic value of this P-mountain which includes both use value and existence value can be determined by aggregating the average value giving total willingness to pay for the entire population, in this case 5.491 billion ~ 10.377 billion.

An Analysis of Consumer's Willingness to Pay for the Improvement of Agricultural Land's Nutrition Balance (농경지 양분수지 개선에 대한 소비자 지불의사 분석)

  • Korea has become the highest nitrogen balance (228 kg/ha) among 34 OECD member countries, and has the stigma of being a 'Nutrient overload country' as of 2019. Accordingly, research on the derivation and utilization of nutrient balance indicators and the 'regional nutrient management system' are being promoted to improve Korea's nutrient balance. It is necessary to support these policies and studies, form a public consensus on improving the nutrient balance, and evaluate the function of the public benefit. This paper aims to estimate the public benefit value of improving the nutrient balance based on an analysis of consumers' willingness to pay and recognition of Korea's nutrient excess for 600 consumers nationwide. As results, 21.2% of the respondents said they were aware of excessive nutrients in Korea, and 76.7% of the respondents said they were aware of the need for nutrient management. The average amount of intention to pay for the improvement of three pollution (soil, water quality, and air) that can occur due to a nutrient overload was ₩2,321.1 for soil pollution improvement, ₩2,391.2 for water pollution improvement, and ₩2,377.9 for air pollution improvement. The average willingness to pay for the three pollution reduction was ₩6,002.3. These results are expected to be used to form a public consensus on the balance of payments and to establish measures to enhance public interest values in the future.

A Study on the Benefit of Driving Amenity Based on Highway Density (도로 밀도에 따른 운전쾌적성 편익에 관한 연구)

  • Normally the benefits concerned in the feasibility study for highway constructions are travel time saving, vehicle operation cost, etc. which can be calculated using the simulation tool(EMME3). However, there must be extra benefits of driving amenity improvement that drivers can perceive through decreasing driving fatigue and improving driving comfortability. In this study, the definition of driving amenity was established and a method of estimation for the benefit of driving amenity improvement was developed. Highway type (urban/rural highway) and highway density was considered to estimate the driving amenity. And Double-bounded Dichotomous Choice among Contingent Valuation Method(CVM) was applied to survey the willingness-to-pay of drivers when highway density decreases. Finally the value of driving amenity was estimated using the results of survey and logit medel. As the existing highway density is high, willingness-to-pay increases in both urban and rural highways. Even though the changing rates of highway density are same, willingness-to-pay is different based on the existing highway density.

  • The purposes of this study are to estimate mean willingness to pay (WTP) for preventing forest fires by contingent valuation method (CVM), and to calibrate the variables affecting WTP. The forest fire prevention fund was utilized as a payment vehicle to elicit respondents' willingness to pay (WTP). A total of 500 adults who reside in Seoul Metropolitan area were selected by two-stage cluster sampling and conducted the face-to-face interview. The scenario was designed to meet the requirements for double-bounded dichotomous choice CVM. More than half of the respondents (64.6%) have a willing to pay for the fund. The mean WTP was \4,532. Therefore a total WTP for the population was \34,165,758,000. The calibration of Weibull proportional hazard model showed that education level, environmental conservation intention and negative consciousness about the effect of forest fire were independent variables strongly influencing the WTP.

Willingness to Pay for Professional Tooth Cleaning in Implant Patients (전문가치면세정술 비용 지불의사가격)

  • This study aimed to arrive at reasonable and realistic prices for professional tooth cleaning (PTC) in order to expand its clinical utilization. The study involved 214 dental implant patients who received PTC. Cross-tabulation, one-way ANOVA, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression were performed for analysis. The mean satisfaction score was 4.60 points, and 92.5% of all subjects were willing to receive PTC consistently. The most common reason to receive PTC was a feeling of refreshment in 84.7%, and 84.1% were willing to pay for PTC. The mean willingness-to-pay price was 28,100 won, and the mode was 10,000 won. Willingness-to-pay price increased as average monthly income and satisfaction level for PTC were higher. The price also increased with age and was higher in women than men. Suggesting and settling reasonable and realistic prices for PTC are expected to be useful in maintaining the long-term health of the dental implant and reducing socio-economic costs.

Consumer’s Willingness To Pay for Residential Water and It’s Policy Implication (생활용수에 대한 소비자의 지불의사 추정 및 정책적 의미)

  • Economic theory tell us, consumers always make a choice to maximize their utility. In the market system, consumers' choices are revealed and policy maker taking into account the aggregated consumers choice such as price, supply and demand. However, water resources as a public goods, therefore typically there is no market and does no aggregated information for residential water use. This study explore the consumers' willingness to pay for higher quality for residential water. Over 1,000 households responded for this survey and willingness to pay has been estimated. Furthermore, consumers' behaviors of residential water are examined. Consumers are willing to reduce the amount of water use with more than 50% of increasing water price, but stay almost constant with less than 25% of increasing which mean that current price level is not high enough to derive water saving. If consumers can have better quality of water, they willing to pay additional 16%, $153\;won/m^3/month$, more than their current price. Based on the derived information, we suggested policy direction for residential water policy.

Consumer Willingness to Pay Price Premium for Certified Wood Products in South Korea

  • The study was conducted to examine consumers' awareness and perceptions on forest certification and their willingness to buy and pay price premium for certified wood products especially for selected four wood products. A total of 136 residents in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province were interviewed in the autumn of 2008. Although only 24.3 percent of the consumers are aware of forest certification, 82.4 percent of the respondents recognized the need and significance of forest certification. In general, 77.2 percent of the respondents were willing to buy certified wood products. Majority of the respondents, 84 out of 136 respondents (61.8%) expressed their willingness to pay (WTP) from more than 0 percent to less than 10 percent. Consumers' average WTP for certified wood products was estimated to be 5.6 percent. From the results of the study, lower priced wood products, such as copier paper (WTP=9.8%) and wood frame (WTP=11.6%), have higher price premiums than high priced products, such as wood table (WTP=6.8%) and wood flooring (WTP=7.6%). In conclusion, there could be feasible markets for certified wood products in South Korea as four out of five consumer are willing to pay more for such products. For the forest certification system to be adopted and widely accepted, the perceptions of forest stakeholders including consumers should be further increased.

A Study on Improvement of Labeling on the Caution for Intake for Health Functional Food (건강기능식품의 섭취 시 주의사항 표시제도 개선에 대한 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze labeling improvements and evaluate willingness to pay for health functional foods with a focus on the caution for intake. For this study, we conducted a survey on health functional food intake behavior, confirmation and improvements of cautions for intake. We assessed the willingness to pay for improvement of the caution for intake. Consumers anticipate improved immune function, and fatigue improvement after consumption of health functional foods. They mainly checked the function components related to efficacy and effectiveness, ingredients and their contents, ingestion amount and method, expiry date and best mode of storage, product name, and cautions associated with ingestion of health functional foods. They has been difficulties in obtaining sufficient caution information for intake from the current labeling method. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the labeling of caution for intake. The analysis indicated that about 5.14% of the respondents were willing to pay more if new labeling was introduces. However, there is still controversy over their safety, which is damaging to the consumers. Therefore, by providing consumers with accurate and detailed information on cautions for intake, it can contribute to securing safety and improving the quality of health functional foods.
