  • SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems can provide images of wide coverage in day, night, and all-weather conditions. However wideband SAR systems are known to be vulnerable to interferences from other devices operating at in-band or adjacent spectrums and this may lead to image corruptions. In this paper, a SAR point target simulator is developed that provides performance analysis on image distortion caused by interferences from other devices. Interference signals are generated based on the experimental data observed from acquired SAR raw data. Simulation results include typical SAR performance measures such as spatial resolution, peak to sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio. Finally, SAR target simulations are performed and shown to correspond to the image corruptions found in real SAR missions affected by RF interferences.

  • Broadband antennas have late-time ringing by multi-reflections between feed points and 0pen ends of the antennas, which indicates the narrowband nature of the antenna. The resistive loading has been used to reduce the late time ringing that is important for ground penetrating radar and resonance detection systems in order to prevent masking of target. In this paper, we design an ultra wide band antenna with resistive loading technique to reduce the internal reflections within the antenna.. The designed antenna is implemented and tested to show inIproved characteristics.

  • In this paper, we studied the IRF performances of the chirp signal used in the SAR system. The most important factors that degrade IRF performances are amplitude and phase errors. Each factor can be represented to linear, quadratic, random and ripple terms. That can be extracted by a quadratic polynomial curve fitting of chirp waveform. We analyzed the IRF performances by the error terms and supposed the minimum value of RF non-linearity to meet the specification of the PSLR and ISLR.

  • Recently, the SAR-GMTI mode is becoming increasingly essential in airborne radar systems. While SAR requires wideband waveforms for high resolution imaging, GMTI requires narrowband waveforms for doppler processing, which makes general LFM waveforms difficult to use for SAR-GMTI. This paper analyses the FJB(Frequency Jump Burst) waveform, which is studied for the SAR-GMTI waveform, and presents the method for the pulse compression and SAR image formation using FJB waveforms. Simulation results show that there is little difference in performances between the FJB waveform and the LFM waveform.

  • In this paper, X-band transceiver for high resolution wideband SAR systems is designed and fabricated. Also as a technique for enhancing the performance, error compensation algorithm is presented. The transceiver for SAR system is composed of transmitter, receiver, switch matrix and frequency generator. The receiver especially has 2 channel mono-pulse structure for ground moving target indication. The transceiver is able to provide the deramping signal for high resolution mode and select the receive bandwidth for receiving according to the operation mode. The transceiver had over 300 MHz bandwidth in X-band and 13.3 dBm output power which is appropriate to drive the T/R module. The receiver gain and noise figure was 39 dB and 3.96 dB respectively. The receive dynamic range was 30 dB and amplitude imbalance and phase imbalance of I/Q channel was ${\pm}$0.38 dBm and ${\pm}$3.47 degree respectively. The transceiver meets the required electrical performances through the individual tests. This paper shows the pulse error term depending on SAR performance was analyzed and range IRF was enhanced by applying the compensation technique.

  • This paper presents an effective method to achieve the wideband waveform for high resolution SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) using the frequency multiplication technique. And also this paper analyzes the root causes for the spectral regrowth due to 3rd-order intermodulation in chirp bandwidth expansion scheme using quadrature modulator and frequency multipliers. The amplitude and phase imbalance requirement are defined based on the simulation results in terms of quadrature channel imbalance. This minimizes the degradation of range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio. The wideband chirp generator using the frequency multiplier and memory map scheme was manufactured and the compensation technique was presented to reduce the spectral regrowth of SAR waveform by minimizing the amplitude and phase imbalance. After I and Q channel imbalance adjustment, the carrier level reduces -28.7 dBm to -53.4 dBm. Chirp signal with 150 MHz bandwidth at S-band expands to 600 MHz bandwidth at X-band. The sidelobe levels are reduced by about 8 to 9 dB by compensating the amplitude balance between I and Q channels.

  • In this paper, a low-loss wideband waveguide transducer is proposed for millimeter-wave communication and radar applications. A conventional E-plane probe transducer is generally designed using thin and flexible substrate at millimeter-wave frequencies, considering the very small waveguide size. However, it results in serious performance degradation caused by the bending of the substrate. In order to alleviate this problem and provide a reliable performance, we propose an extended E-plane probe transducer where the probe substrate is extended to and fix ed in the slit area formed in the waveguide wall. It is fabricated using $127{\mu}m$-thick substrate with dielectric constant of 2.2. The measurement in the back-to-hack configuration shows the excellent insertion loss of 1.35 dB (${\pm}0.35dB$) including the loss of 3 cm-long thru waveguide and return loss better than 13.8 dB over entire W-band (75-110 GHz). Therefore, it can be effectively applied for millimeter-wave high-speed communications and high-sensitivity radars.

  • A high-performance wideband transition from microstrip to waveguide is proposed. This transition is designed by consideration of gradual field transformation and optimal impedance matching between microstrip line and fin-line. Clear design guidelines of proposed transition using fin-line taper with offset DSPSL (double-sided parallel stripline) are provided to determine the transition shape and the transition length. The fabricated transition exhibits less than 0.67 dB insertion loss per transition for frequencies from 85 to 108 GHz, and less than 1 dB insertion loss from 83 to over 110 GHz. Proposed transition is expected compact radar and various applications.

  • In this paper, a 26GHz variable gain amplifier fabricated using a 40nm CMOS process is studied. In the case of an automobile radar using 79 GHz, it is advantageous in designing and driving to drive down to a low frequency band or to use a low frequency band before up conversion rather than designing and matching the entire circuit to 79 GHz in terms of frequency characteristics. In the case of a Phased Array System that uses time delay through TTD (True Time Delay) in practice, down conversion to a lower frequency is advantageous in realizing a real time delay and reducing errors. For a VGA (Variable Gain Amplifier) operating in the 26GHz frequency band that is 1/3 of the frequency of 79GHz, VDD : 1V, Bias 0.95V, S11 is designed to be <-9.8dB (Mea. High gain mode) and S22 < (Mea. high gain mode), Gain: 2.69dB (Mea. high gain mode), and P1dB: -15 dBm (Mea. high gain mode). In low gain mode, S11 is <-3.3dB (Mea. Low gain mode), S22 <-8.6dB (Mea. low gain mode), Gain: 0dB (Mea. low gain mode), P1dB: -21dBm (Mea. Low gain mode).
