  • Adsorption tower systems based on activated carbon adsorption towers have mainly been employed to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a major cause of air pollution. However, the activated carbon currently used in these systems has a short lifespan and thus requires frequent replacement. An approach to overcome this shortcoming could be to develop metal oxide photocatalysis-activated carbon composites capable of degrading VOCs by simultaneously utilizing photocatalytic activation and powerful adsorption by activated carbon. TiO2 has primarily been used as a metal oxide photocatalyst, but it has low economic efficiency due to its high cost. In this study, ZnO particles were synthesized as a photocatalyst due to their relatively low cost. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were deposited on the ZnO surface to compensate for the photocatalytic deactivation that arises from the wide band gap of ZnO. A microfluidic process was used to synthesize ZnO particles and Ag NPs in separate reactors and the solutions were continuously supplied with a pack bed reactor loaded with activated carbon powder. This microfluidic-assisted pack bed reactor efficiently prepared a Ag-ZnO-activated carbon composite for VOC removal. Analysis confirmed that Ag-ZnO photocatalytic particles were successfully deposited on the surface of the activated carbon. Conducting a toluene gasbag test and adsorption breakpoint test demonstrated that the composite had a more efficient removal performance than pure activated carbon. The process proposed in this study efficiently produces photocatalysis-activated carbon composites and may offer the potential for scalable production of VOC removal composites.

  • CaF2 single crystal has a large band gap (12 eV), and it is used for optical windows, prisms, and lenses due to its excellent transmittance in a wide wavelength range and low refractive index. Moreover, it is expected to be one of the materials for ultraviolet transmissive laser optical components. CaF2 belongs to the fluoride compounds and has a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with three sub-lattices. The representative method for CaF2 single crystal growth is Czochralski, which method has the advantages of high production efficiency and the ability to make large crystals. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray rocking curves (XRC) measurement, and chemical etching were performed to analyze the crystallinity and defect density of the CaF2 single crystals, grown by the Czochralski method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy systems were used to investigate the optical properties of the CaF2 crystal. The provability of various applications, including UV application, was systematically investigated with various analysis results.

  • The CaF2 single crystal has notable characteristics such as a large band gap (12 eV), excellent transparency over a wide wavelength range, low refractive index and dispersion. Due to these outstanding properties, CaF2 single crystal has considered as a promising material for short-wavelength light sources in recent lithography processes. However, there is an inherent birefringence of the material at 157 nm and the resulting aberration can be compensated for through the combination of the (100) plane and the (111) plane. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the characteristics according to the plane. In this study, we analyzed crystallinity, optical properties of commercial CaF2 single crystal wafers grown by the Czochralski method. In particular, through chemical etching under various conditions, it was confirmed that the shape of etch pits appears differently depending on the plane and the shape and array of specific etch pits affected by dislocations and defects were examined.

  • β-Ga2O3 is a material with a wide band gap of ~4.8 eV and a high breakdown-voltage of 8 MV/cm, and is attracting much attention in the field of power device applications. In addition, compared to representative WBG semiconductor materials such as SiC, GaN and Diamond, it has the advantage of enabling single crystal growth with high growth rate and low manufacturing cost [1-4]. In this study, we succeeded in growing a 10 mm thick β-Ga2O3 single crystal doped with 0.3 mol% SnO2 through the EFG (Edge-defined Film-fed Growth) method using multi-slit structure. The growth direction and growth plane were set to [010]/(010), respectively, and the growth speed was about 12 mm/h. The grown β-Ga2O3 single crystal was cut into various crystal planes (010, 001, 100, ${\bar{2}}01$) and surface processed. The processed samples were compared for characteristics according to crystal plane through analysis such as XRD, UV/VIS/NIR/Spec., Mercury Probe, AFM and Etching. This research is expected to contribute to the development of power semiconductor technology in high-voltage and high-temperature applications, and selecting a substrate with better characteristics will play an important role in improving device performance and reliability.

  • β-Ga2O3 is a representative ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor that has attracted much attention for power device applications due to its wide-bandgap of 4.9 eV and high-breakdown voltage of 8 MV/cm. In addition, because solution growth is possible, it has advantages such as fast growth rate and lower production cost compared to SiC and GaN [1-2]. In this study, we have successfully grown Si-doped 10 mm thick Si-doped β-Ga2O3 single crystals by the EFG (Edge-defined Film-fed Growth) method. The growth direction and growth principal plane were set to [010] / (010), respectively, and the growth speed was 7~20 mm/h. The as-grown β-Ga2O3 single crystal was cut into various crystal planes (001, 100, ${\bar{2}}01$) and off-angles (1o, 3o, 4o), and then surface processed. After processed, the homoepitaxial layer was grown on the epi-ready substrate using the HVPE (Halide vapor phase epitaxy) method. The processed samples and the epi-layer grown samples were analyzed by XRD, AFM, OM, and Etching to compare the surface properties according to the crystal plane and off-angle.

  • ZnO, II-VI group inorganic compound semi-conductor, has been receiving much attention due to its wide applications in various fields. Since the ZnO has 3.37 eV of a wide band gap and 60 meV of big excitation binding energy, it is well-known material for various uses such the optical property, a semi-conductor, magnetism, antibiosis, photocatalyst, etc. When applied in the field of photocatalyst, many research studies have been actively conducted regarding magnetic materials and the core-shell structure to take on the need of recycling used materials. In this paper, magnetic core-shell ZnFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized through three steps. In order to analyze the structural characteristics of the synthesized substances, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used. The spinel structure of ZnFe2O4 and the wurtzite structure of ZnO were confirmed by XRD, and ZnO production rate was confirmed through the analysis of different concentrations of the precursors. The surface change of the synthesized materials was confirmed by SEM. The formation of SiO2 layer and the synthesis of ZnFe2O4@ZnO@SiO2 NPs were finally verified through the bond of Fe-O, Zn-O and Si-O-Si by FT-IR. The magnetic property of the synthesized materials was analyzed through the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The increase and decrease in the magnetism were respectively confirmed by the results of the formed ZnO and SiO2 layer. The photocatalysis effect of the synthesized ZnFe2O4 @ZnO@SiO2 NPs was experimented in a black box (dark room) using methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation.

  • The β-Ga2O3 has the most thermodynamically stable phase, a wide band gap of 4.8~4.9 eV and a high dielectric breakdown voltage of 8MV/cm. Due to such excellent electrical characteristics, this material as a power device material has been attracted much attention. Furthermore, the β-Ga2O3 has easy liquid phase growth method unlike materials such as SiC and GaN. However, since the grown pure β-Ga2O3 single crystal requires the intentionally controlled doping due to a low conductivity to be applied to a power device, the research on doping in β-Ga2O3 single crystal is definitely important. In this study, various source powders of un-doped, Sn 0.05 mol%, Sn 0.1 mol%, Sn 1.5 mol%, Sn 2 mol%, Sn 3 mol%-doped Ga2O3 were prepared by adding different mole ratios of SnO2 powder to Ga2O3 powder, and β-Ga2O3 single crystals were grown by using an edge-defined Film-fed Growth (EFG) method. The crystal direction, crystal quality, optical, and electrical properties of the grown β-Ga2O3 single crystal were analyzed according to the Sn dopant content, and the property variation of β-Ga2O3 single crystal according to the Sn doping were extensively investigated.
