  • This paper applies WiMedia UWB network into a wireless ship area network (WSAN) so as to support high-quality multimedia services on board and reliable instrument control information as well, since the need for mixed high-quality video traffic and shipboard control data traffic is essential for a high-cost valued digital ship. Thus, in this paper, prioritized contention access (PCA) and distributed reservation protocol (DRP) based on WiMedia UWB (ECMA-368) MAC protocols are combined and proposed to such mixed traffic environment, by varying the portions of superframe according to traffic type. It is shown that the proposed WiMedia UWB MAC protocol can provide reliable mixed video and shipboard control data traffic as well.

  • This paper considers WiMedia UWB network based wireless ship area network (WSAN) so as to support high-quality multimedia video data services and important shipboard control data. In this paper, prioritized contention access (PCA) and distributed reservation protocol (DRP) based on WiMedia UWB (ECMA-368) MAC protocols are combined and proposed to support mixed high-quality video traffic and shipboard control data traffic applying varying DRP and PCA data periods according to channel condition and link parameter ptimization. • In this paper, we propose a QoS (Quality of Service)-aware and cooperative resource reservation scheme using cross-layer link adaptation for wireless high definition video transmission through UWB (Ultra Wide Band) network with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). A wireless high definition video transmission system usually requires stable high throughput even without line-of-sight, e.g., a destination device in another room separated by a wall. Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of DRP resource reservation conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. And the current WiMedia MAC standard has not considered QoS provisioning even though QoS parameters such as a range of service rates are provided to each traffic stream. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol with QoS-based relay node selection criterion, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP resource reservation conflicts and guarantee QoS more stably through cross-layer link adaptation of cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and QoS provisioning.

  • In this paper, a resource management scheme for preventing the video frame loss in the presence of network congestion is proposed. WiMedia protocol is suitable for the application that supports the real-time multimedia service in the ship area network since it supports high speed data transfer. However, network congestion causes the degradation of video quality, since WiMedia standard discards video frames regardless of importance of video frame. Therefore, a resource management scheme for WiMedia network is proposed in this paper. The proposed technique can intelligently treat the network congestion, and solve the degradation of video quality.

  • The WiMedia alliance has specified a distributed medium access control (WiMedia MAC) protocol based on ultra wideband (UWB) for high data rate WPANs (HR-WPANs). The merits of WiMedia MAC such as distributed nature and high data rate make it a favorite candidate in HR-WPAN. Although QoS parameters such as the range of service rates are provided to a traffic stream, the WiMedia MAC is not able to use the QoS parameters and to determine or adjust a service rate using the QoS parameters for the traffic stream. In this paper, we propose a fair and adaptive resource allocation method that allocates time slots to isochronous streams according to QoS parameters and the current traffic load condition in a fully distributed manner. Although the traffic load condition changes, each device independently recognizes the changes and calculates fair and maximum allowable service rates for traffic streams. From the numerical and simulation results, it is proved that the proposed method achieves high capacity of traffic streams and fair QoS provisioning under various traffic load condition.

  • In this paper, a relay communication scheme for enhancing the WiMedia network performance by device's mobility is proposed. WiMedia protocol is suitable for the application that supports the real-time multimedia service in Ship Area Network since it supports high speed data transfer. However, the device's mobility is caused the dramatic change of link state and network topology, and is occurred the degradation of network performance. Therefore, a relay communication scheme for WiMedia network is proposed in this paper. The proposed technique can intelligently treat the change of link state, and solve the degradation of network performance.

  • N-screen is a promising technology to improve support for multimedia multicasting, content sharing, content mobility, media scalability, and seamless mobility. In this paper, the WiMedia distributed-MAC (D-MAC) protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-screen wireless service. Furthermore, to provide a multi-hop, one source multi-use N-screen service through point to point streaming in a seamless D-MAC protocol, a dynamic multi-frame transmission technology is proposed. In this technology, a dynamic time slot allocation scheme and a multi-hop resource reservation scheme are combined. In the proposed dynamic time slot allocation scheme, two thresholds, a hard threshold and a soft threshold, are included to satisfy the power consumption and delay requirements. A multi-frame DRP reservation scheme is proposed to minimize end-to-end delay during the multi-hop transmissions between N-screen devices. The proposed dynamic multi-frame transmission scheme enhances N-screen performance in terms of the multi-hop link establishment success rate and link establishment time compared to the conventional WiMedia D-MAC system.

  • This paper presents a design of a multi-band infernal antenna for mobile handsets which can cover the major mobile services such as WiBro/WiMAX mobile internet services and Media-FLO/S-DMB services. Using wideband monopole antenna structure, the proposed antenna obtains the wide bandwidth characteristic at high Sequency band to be applicable for new mobile services. Stacking meandered radiator on the wideband monopole radiator and obtaining the different current path and lenga on these stacked radiators, overall antenna volume is effectively reduced. The measured bandwidths (VSWR<3) of the proposed antenna is 270 MHz and 2032 MHz at low and high band, respectively. This antenna can effectively covers major wireless communication bands including Media-FLO, CDMA, GSM, GPS, DCS, PCS, UMTS, WiBro, WiMAX, and S-DMB.
