Cross correlation of seismic-background motions (Campillo and Paul, 2003; Shapiro et al., 2005) is applied to observations from the Korean Meteorological Administration seismic network to estimate the short-period Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion characteristics of the region. Standard processing procedures are applied to the cross correlation, except that signal whitening is used in place of one-bit sampling to equalize power in signals from different times. Multiple-filter analysis is used to extract the group velocities from the estimated Green's functions, which are then used to image the spatially varying dispersion at periods between 0.5 and 20 sec. The tomographic inversion technique used inverts all periods simultaneously to provide a smooth dispersion curve as a function of period in addition to the usual smooth spatial image for a given period. The Gyeongsang Basin in the southeastern part of the peninsula is clearly resolved with lower group velocities.
Adaptive LMS algorithm has been used in many application areas due to its low complexity. In this paper input signal is transformed into the subbands with arbitrary bandwidth. In each subbands the dynamic range can be reduced, so that the independent filtering in each subbands has faster convergence rate than the full band system. The DCT transform domain LMS adaptive filtering has the whitening effect of input signal at each bands. This leads the convergence rate to very high speed owing to the decrease of eigen value spread Finally, the filtered signals in each subbands are synthesized for the output signal to have full frequency components. In this procedure wavelet filter bank guarantees the perfect reconstruction of signal without any interspectra interference. In simulation for the case of speech signal added additive white gaussian noise, the suggested algorithm shows better performance than that of conventional NLMS algorithm at high SNR.

Cognitive radio systems have been considered as a strong solution of frequency scarcity due to the limit of frequency resources. This paper proposed an active interference management scheme that the secondary system can coexist with the primary system in the same frequency band without interference. Using the proposed protocol, the secondary user acquires interference channel information and transmit/receive filter information and designs precoding matrix using these information. Since interference from the secondary systems are collected to unused subchannels of the primary system, the primary system can suppress interference without additional process. The secondary systems suppress interference from the primary system using whitening matched filter so that the spectral efficiency can be improved. Numerical results provides that the proposed scheme improves performance of the secondary systems without interference to the primary system and do not degrade performance of the primary system even if the number of the secondary systems increases.

In a conventional ICA(Independent Component Analysis) based face recognition method, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) first is used for feature extraction, ICA learning method then is applied for feature enhancement in the reduced dimension. It is not considered that a necessary component can be located in the discarded feature space. In the new ICA(NICA), learning extracts features using the magnitude of kurtosis (4-th order central moment or cumulant). But, the pure ICA method can not discard noise effectively. The synergy effect of PCA and ICA can be achieved if PCA is used for noise reduction filter. Namely, PCA does whitening and noise filtering. ICA performs feature extraction. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the new ICA method compared to the conventional ICA approach.

We propose two feedback interference cancellers(FICs) to improve the performance of the equalization digital on-channel repeater(EDOCR) with the FIC for the ATSC DTV broadcasting system. The FIC estimates the feedback channel between Tx. and Rx. antennas of the repeater by cross-correlating the reference signal and the feedback signal. Since there is a DC pilot which ruins the white property of the ATSC DTV signals, the FIC cannot estimate the feedback channel accurately. To solve the problem, the structural method which uses an additional DC pilot free reference for feedback channel estimation and the algorithmic method based on the digital signal processing which whitens the ATSC DTV signals and performs the feedback cancellation in the whitened signal domain. Simulation results show that the proposed two FICs show better feedback cancellation performance than the conventional FIC.
This study presents the findings of the structural health monitoring and the real time system identification of one of the first large scale building instrumentations in Turkey for earthquake safety. Within this context, a thorough review of steps in the instrumentation, monitoring is presented and seismic performance evaluation of structures using both nonlinear pushover and nonlinear dynamic time history analysis is carried out. The sensor locations are determined using the optimal sensor placement techniques used in NASA for on orbit modal identification of large space structures. System identification is carried out via the stochastic subspace technique. The results of the study show that under ambient vibrations, stocky buildings can be substantially stiffer than what is predicted by the finite element models due to the presence of a large number of partitioning walls. However, in a severe earthquake, it will not be safe to rely on this resistance due to the fact that once the partitioning walls crack, the bare frame contributes to the lateral stiffness of the building alone. Consequently, the periods obtained from system identification will be closer to those obtained from the FE analysis. A technique to control the validity of the proportional damping assumption is employed that checks the presence of phase difference in displacements of different stories obtained from band pass filtered records and it is confirmed that the "proportional damping assumption" is valid for this structure. Two different techniques are implemented for identifying the influence of the soil structure interaction. The first technique uses the transfer function between the roof and the basement in both directions. The second technique uses a pre-whitening filter on the data obtained from both the basement and the roof. Subsequently the impulse response function is computed from the scaled cross correlation between the input and the output. The overall results showed that the structure will satisfy the life safety performance level in a future earthquake but some soil structure interaction effects should be expected in the North South direction.

Interference can seriously degrade the performance of GPS receiver because GPS signal has extremely low power at earth surface. This paper presents a Narrowband Interference Excision Filter (NIEF) in frequency domain that removes narrowband interferences with small signal loss. A NIEF transforms the received GPS signals with interferences into the frequency domain with FFT and then compute statistics such as mean and standard deviation to determine an excision threshold. All spectrums exceeding the threshold are removed and the remaining spectrums are restored by IFFT. A NIEF effectively can remove various and strong interferences with a simple structure. However, the signal power loss is unavoidable during FFT and IFFT. Besides the hamming window and overlap technique, a threshold-whitening technique and an adaptive detection threshold are adopted to effectively reduce the signal power loss. The performance of implemented NIEF is evaluated using real signals obtained by 12 bit GPS signal acquisition board. The output of NIEF is fed into the Software Defined Receiver to evaluate the acquisition and tracking performance. Experimental results shows that many types of interference such as single-tone CWI, AM, FM, swept CWI and multi-tones CWI are effectively mitigated with small signal power loss.
Two representative residual static methods of traveltime decomposition and stack-power maximization are discussed in terms of application to land seismic data. For the model data with synthetic shot/receiver statics (time shift) applied and random noises added, continuities of reflection event are much improved by stack-power maximization method, resulting the derived time-shifts approximately equal to the synthetic statics. Optimal parameters (maximum allowable shift, correlation window, iteration number) for residual statics are effectively chosen with diagnostic displays of CSP (common shot point) stack and CRP (common receiver point) stack as well as CMP gather. In addition to removal of long-wavelength time shift by refraction statics, prior to residual statics, processing steps of f-k filter, predictive deconvolution and time variant spectral whitening are employed to attenuate noises and thereby to minimize the error during the correlation process. The reflectors including horizontal layer of reservoir are more clearly shown in the variable-density section through repicking the velocities after residual statics and inverse NMO correction.

Nowadays there are many sun protection cosmetics including organic or inorganic UV filter as an active ingredient. Chemically stable inorganic sunsEreen agents, usually metal oxides, we widely employed in high SPF products. Titanium dioxide is one of the most frequently used inorganic UV filters. It has been used as pigments for a long period of cosmetic history. With the development of micronization techniques, it becomes possible to incorporate titanium dioxide in sunscreen formulations without whitening effect and it becomes an important research topic. However, there are very few works related to quantitations of titanium dioxide in sunscreen products. In this research, we analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide in sunscreen cosmetics by adapting redof titration, reduction of Ti(IV) to Ti(III) and reoxidation to Ti(IV). After calcification of other organic ingredients of cosmetics, titanium dioxide is dissolved by hot sulfuric acid. The dissolved Ti(IV) is reduced to the Ti(III) by adding aluminum metals. The reduced Ti(III) is titrated against a standard oxidizing agent, Fe(III) (ammonium iron(III) sulfate), with potassium thiocyanate as an indicator In order to test accuracy and applicability of the proposed method, we analyzed the amounts of titanium dioxide in four types of sunscreen cosmetics, such as cream, make-up base, foundation and powder, after adding known amounts of titanium dioxide $(1{\sim}25w/w%)$. The percent recoveries of the titanium dioxide in four types of formulations were in the range between 96 and 105%. We also analyzed 7 commercial cosmetic products labeled titanium dioxide as an ingredient and compared the results with those of obtained from ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry), one of the most powerful atomic analysis techniques. The results showed that the titrated amounts were well coincided with the analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide by ICP-AES. Although instrumental analytical methods, ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-AES, are the best for the analysis of titanium, it is hard to adopt because of their high prices for small cosmetic companies. It was found that the volumetric method presented here gat e quantitative and reliable results with routine lab-wares and chemicals.
