Classification of White Blood Cell Using Adaptive Active Contour

  • The differential white blood cell count plays an important role in the diagnosis of different diseases. It is a tedious task to count these classes of cell manually. An automatic counter using computer vision helps to perform this medical test rapidly and accurately. Most commercial-available automatic white blood cell analysis composed mainly 3 steps including segmentation, feature extraction and classification. In this paper we concentrate on the first step in automatic white-blood-cell analysis by proposing a segmentation scheme that utilizes a benefit of active contour. Specifically, the binary image is obtained by thresolding of the input blood smear image. The initial shape of active is then placed roughly inside the white blood cell and allowed to grow to fit the shape of individual white blood cell. The white blood cell is then separated using the extracted contour. The force that drives the active contour is the combination of gradient vector flow force and balloon force. Our purposed technique can handle very promising to separate the remaining red blood cells.

백혈구 수와 대사증후군과의 관련성 (Relationship between White Blood Cell Counts and the Metabolic Syndrome)

  • 광주지역의 한 종합병원 수검자를 대상으로 백혈구 수와 대사증후군과의 관련 요인을 분석하고자 단면 연구를 시행한 결과 대사증후군의 유병률은 남성이 25.2%, 여성은 13.3%로 나타났으며, 연령별 유병률은 남성은 40대에서, 여성은 60세 이상에서 가장 높은 유병률을 보였고 남녀 모두 백혈구수가 증가 할수록 대사증후군의 유병률이 높게 나타났다. 대사증후군과 백혈구수와의 로지스틱 회귀분석의 결과에서는 남, 여 모두 백혈구 수가 증가 할수록 대사증후군의 위험도가 증가하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서는 비록 정상범위 일지라도 증가된 백혈구 수는 대사증후군과 연관성이 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 대사증후군 기준을 충족시키는 항목수가 많을수록 백혈구 수는 증가하는 경향을 보였고, 백혈구 수를 네 개의 군으로 나누었을 때 백혈구 구분수가 증가할수록 대사증후군의 유병률도 증가하고 있었다. 백혈구수와 백혈구 감별계산이 대사증후군을 예측하는 인자로 가치가 있는지는 광범위한 대단위 연구와 시간적 순서에 의해 인과관계를 규명하는 코호트연구가 필요하다고 생각된다.

해양 V. vulnificus의 내독소가 rat의 혈액 성분에 미치는 독성 효과 (The Toxic Effect Of Marine V. Vulnificus Endotoxin OH the Blood Component in Rat)

  • Endotoxin from the cell wall of marine V. vujnificus was .extracted using the hot phenol-water method, injected endotoxin into rat, and tested the toxic effect of endotoxin on the blood component In rat blood. The results showed that blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen, white blood cell, and reticulocyte were Increased and red blood cell was the same as the number of control group(normal blood), but platelet was decreased. Above results suggested that endotoxin induced a malfunction of liver and that the Increase of white blood cell was for the removal of foreign toxic substance.

Large Cohort Association of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism of PLA2G4A Gene with White Blood Cell Counts in Korean Population

  • The PLA2G4A catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids to release arachidonic acid, which is metabolized into lipid-based cellular hormones that regulate inflammatory response. The circulating blood cell numbers can be influenced by stress, infection or inflammation. Quantitative blood cell count traits analysis for the 19 SNPs in the PLA2G4A gene in the Korean Association Resource (KARE) cohort (7551 subjects) was performed. The only one SNP (rs10752979) in the all blood cell count was satisfied with the Bonferroni corrected P-value (<0.00263). Furthermore, 6 of the 19 SNPs in the PLA2G4A gene showed a weak or moderate association with blood cell count (P-values: 0.0048~0.042), suggesting the clue of an association between the PLA2G4A gene and blood cell count, especially white blood cell count. This study may provide insight into the genetic basis of blood cell count related with reaction of infection.

미숙아에서 수혈 후 백혈구수의 변화 (The Change of White Blood Cell Count Following Transfusion in Preterm Neonates)

  • 목 적 : 신생아 집중치료실에서 치료 중인 미숙아에서 적혈구 수혈 후의 백혈구수의 변화를 조사해 보고자 하였다. 그리고 그 정도가 신생아 감염을 의미할 만한 정도인지 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법 : 2년 1개월간 본원 신생아 집중 치료실에서 농축 적혈구를 수혈 받은 환아 33명(총 수혈횟수 48회)을 대상으로 수혈 전후의 백혈구수, 호중구수, 대호중구수를 후향적으로 비교, 분석하였다. 결 과 : 적혈구 수혈 후 최초 8시간(제 1기)에 백혈구와 호중구가 각각 평균값이 $1.33{\times}10^3/mm^3$(P=0.03), $0.55{\times}10^3/mm^3$(P=0.05 )증가하였으나, 수혈 후 17-24시간(제 3기)에는 수혈 전과 큰 차이가 없었다. 대호중구수는 모든 대상 환아에서 수혈 전후에 큰 변화가 없었다. 결 론 : 적혈구 수혈 후 일시적으로 호중구 상승에 의한 백혈구 상승이 나타나지만, 24시간경에는 수혈전 수치에 가까워지고, 초기의 그 상승 정도가 크지 않아 신생아 감염으로 혼동되지는 않을 것 같다.

남자 대학생들의 흡연여부에 따른 유산소운동이 체열과 혈액 검사치에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Body Temperature and Blood Components on Smoking Male University Students)

  • Background: To determine the effect of Aerobic exercise(AE) on body temperature and blood components in smoking male subjects. Methods: 15 subjects were randomly assigned to Smoking group(smoking, n=8) and Non-smoking group(Non-smoking, n=7). To measure body temperature and blood components. For evaluation of body temperature, the Infrared Thermography, IT was used, and blood components was measured using the Complete Blood cell Count(CBC). Results: The results shows that White blood cell (WBC) was significantly (p<0.05) increased in Smoking group. and no significantly difference between groups(p<0.05). Regarding body temperature, was significantly (p<0.05) increased in Smoking group and Non-somking group. and no significantly difference between groups(p<0.05). Conclusion: Aerobic exercise can increase White blood cell and body temperature in smokers.

Blood Component Change in Rat by Lipopolysaccharide and Cell Wall Protein-A from Vibrio vulnificus, E. coli, and S. typhimurium

  • Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cell wall protein-A (CWP-A) were extracted from the cell wall of Vibrio vulnificus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. LPSs and CWP-As were injected into rat and the changes of the following blood components were examined. The change of the number of white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RCB), platelet (PLT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and blood glucose in rat blood and interferon (IFN) activity change by LPS and CWP-A were measured. WBC, RETI, PTT, and BUN were increased and RBC and blood glucose were increased slightly, but PLT was decreased.

황기건중탕(黃芪建中湯)이 Methotrexate로 유도된 흰쥐의 면역기능저하(免疫機能低下)에 미치는 영향(影響) (The Effect of Hwanggigunjung-tang on Imunosuppression induced by Methotrexate in Rat)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Hwanggigunjungtang(HGT) on white rats with deteriorated immunity caused by methotrexate. Methods: First, methotrexate was fed to the white rats once a day for 4 days. After the immune responses of the rats are deteriorated, dried extracts of HGT mixed in water was fed to the rats once a day for 14 days. And then we measured the percentage of B-cell and T-cell in peripheral blood, the percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell and CD3+CD8+ T-cell of blood sampled from spleen and peripheral region. Results: The percentage of B-cell of peripheral blood was not different statistically. The percentage of T-cell of peripheral blood was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell of peripheral blood was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD8+ T-cell of peripheral blood was decreased in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell of spleen was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD8+ T-cell of spleen was not different statistically. Conclusion: According to the above results, HGT has an effect of increasing immune responses on white rats with deteriorated immunity caused by methotrexate.

The Genetic Variations of NOD2 Are Associated With White Blood Cell Counts

  • The cytoplasmic elicitor, nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing domain receptors (NLRs) is well established molecules in its role in inflammatory response. Among 22 NLR receptors, NOD2 is one of the intensively studied genes of elucidating for the inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn's disease as well. Recent research have accumulated that common genetic mutations in Parkinson's disease (PD) are increasingly related to the susceptibility to Crohn's disease. In this study, with the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, we aimed to perform the association between NOD2 polymorphisms and blood cell counts [WBC (white blood cell) count, RBC (red blood cell) count, platelet count], which linked supposedly to cytoplasmic inflammatory responses with clinical specialty. Linear regression analyses were performed, controlling for residential area, sex, and age as covariates. As a results, 12 SNPs from NOD2 gene were significantly associated with WBC counts (Bonferroni correction P-value criteria < 0.05/23=0.00218). In this study, we could ensure an association with NOD2 gene and WBC counts. This is the first report to have relationship between SNPs of NOD2 gene and WBC counts.

신체냉각이 혈액세포성분 및 응혈기전에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (Hematologic and Coagulation Changes in Hypothermic Dogs)

  • This experiment was carried out to study the responses of cellular component of blood and bone marrow to cold and also the changes of coagulation during cooling. Forty-two mongrel dogs were subjected to hypothermia by ice-water surface cooling technique. Lowest body temperature ranged from 21-23 degree. Dogs were divided into 3 groups,Group I, 12 dogs: pentothal anesthesia for 3 hours, Group II, 20 dogs;hypothermic group and Group III,10 dogs;postsplenectomy hypothermic group. Results were summarized as follows: 1. Hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cell count significantly increased when animals were cooled, and increase was noted in similar magnitude among the animals of Group I. 2. White blood cell count extremely decreased after cooling and effect of splenectomy on white blood cell count was not apparent. No significant changes were seen among Group I. 3. Differential count of white blood cell when cooled showed relative increase of polymorphonuclear neutrophil and decrease of lymphocyte. 4. There was marked decrease of platelets when body temperature reached to 21-23degree and essentially. no changes was noted in Group I. 5. Clotting time, bleeding time, plasma prothrombin time, recalcification time, and fibrinolysis showed no significant changes when dogs were cooled. Clot retration and prothrombin consumption during hypothermia appeared to be poor. In Group II, bleeding time decreased after splenctomy and when body temperature was lowered, plasma prothrombin time, clot retraction, and prothrombin consumption decreased. Decreased bleeding time and poor clot retraction were noted in Group I. 6. It was found that megacaryocyte count decreased even though platelet count of peripheral blood markedly diminsished when animals were cooled. There was some tendency of erythroid hyperplasia noted during hypothermia.
