The Effects of Light Colors on the Behavior and Performance of Broiler Chickens (조명의 색이 육계의 행동과 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the behavior and performance of male and female broiler chickens reared under three different colors of light (white, blue and red) in a 23L:1D of lighting program. Day-old broiler chicks were obtained and assigned to six pens (16 males and 16 females per pen). Two pens each were located in three different rooms in an environmentally controlled shed and received the different light colors. All birds received same husbandry conditions. After a 3-day adaptation to the light color, behavior observations (pecking, resting, standing and walking) were made on six focal birds per pen, representing the sex ratio, by direct visual scans for 120 minutes daily for five days a week throughout the 5-week study. Body weights and feed intake were recorded at weekly intervals. On days 19 and 33, welfare indicators (tonic immobility reaction on the 19 and 33 days old; gait scores, foot pad and hock burns scores on 33 days old) were determined. Light color had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the weight gain and feed intake of broilers, but significantly (P<0.05) influenced the feed conversion ratio. Birds receiving the blue light were more (P<0.05) efficient than those receiving white and red lights. Resting was observed to be the major behavior pattern, irrespective of sex or light color. During early growth, resting behavior tended to be lower in birds receiving red light. However, standing and walking behaviors tended to be higher in birds receiving red light in 4 to 18 day-old age and all of experimental periods, respectively. These data indicate that light color can influence broiler performance and behavior.

Changes in the Quality Characteristics of Mung Bean Starch Jelly with White Lotus(Nelumbo nucifera) Root Powder Added (연근가루를 첨가한 청포묵의 품질 특성 변화)

  • This study investigates the quality characteristics of mung bean starch Jelly by addition of different ratios of white lotus(Nelumbo nucifera) root powder during 5 days of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The moisture content of the samples ranged from 86.78 to 88.88%. The L value of the samples decreased as the amount of white lotus root powder increased; however, the a value and b value were significantly(p<0.05) increased. For the sensory evaluation, color and taste were decreased as the amount of white lotus root powder increased. Flavor and shine were not significantly different among the samples. And clarity and elasticity were highest in the sample with no powder and 5% of white lotus root powder. Hardness was decreased(p<0.05) as the amount of white lotus root powder increased. Overall acceptability was highest when using 0% and 5%. Texture profiles of hardness decreased as the amount of white lotus root powder increased. Hardness, gumminess, chewiness were found to drop significantly(p<0.05) after one day of storage. Cohesiveness was not significantly different among the samples according to the amounts of white lotus root powder. Adhesiveness was not significantly different in 0, 5, 10, and 15% of white lotus root powder. Syneresis was increased during the storage period. From the result, the most advisable mixture ratio of mung bean starch jelly with white lotus root powder was 19 g of mung bean starch, 1g of white lotus root, 0.1 g of salt and 160 mL of water.

Changes in the Grain Quality of Rice with Respect to the Duration of Lodging Time

  • The specific objective of this study was to determine the changes in grain quality of lodged rice with respect to the duration of lodging time and compare the changes with those of unlodged one. The rice 'Janganbyeo' was cultivated and half of paddy field was totally lodged at 30 days after heading. Both lodged paddy and unlodged paddy were harvested at intervals and used for the grain quality determination. The lodged rice did not show any remarkable changes in grain quality until the $4^{th}$ day of lodging for rough rice and until the $2^{nd}$ or the $4^{th}$ day of lodging for brown rice and white rice. The overall grain quality of lodged rice could be kept for 2 to 4 days of lodging.

A Study on the Pidan-Making Process with Korean Bird′s Eggs (한국산 조란류의 피단제조에 관한 연구)

  • The alkali solution consisting of 5% NaOH, 5% NaCl, 2% Tea is most suitable for making pidan. During the soaking period, the values of pH increased from pH 9.02~ 9.19 to pH 12 in the egg white and increased from PH 6.1 to PH 11.63 in the egg yolk. Quail's egg jelled on the 7th day of immersion and the hen's egg and duck's egg jelled on the 10th day of immersion. The Quail's egg ripened at $25^{\circ}C$ in 30~35 days, and Sunghua crystals were formed at the end of the ripening period The moisture content of pidans decreased by 3.5~4.0%, but relatively crude protein, crude fat and crude ash increased by 1.0%, 1.9% and twice respectively. The content of Ca in the hen's pidan and quail's pidan increased about 40%, that of K in the duck's pidan increased about 13% and that of Mg in the hen's pidan and duck's pidan increased about 23~28%. The content of Na in the 3 groups all increased approximately 7 times. The content of total cholesterol level in pidan yolks decreased by 21~40% in each pidan. As a result of a sensory evaluation, the white hen's pidan was most agreeable in flavor and the quail's pidan was most agreeable.

Estimation of Heterosis from Strain Crosses of White Crosses and White Plymouth Rock for Certain Economic Traits (백색코니쉬와 백색플리머드록 계통간 교배단계별 경제형질에 대한 잡종강세 발현율 추정)

  • This study was carried out to estimate combining abilities and heterosis in White Cornish and White Plymouth Rock. The data were obtained over an 8weeks period from 3rd Oct., 1984 to 28th Nov. 1984 at the Livestock Experiment Station. A total of 810 birds, composed of 369 pure strains, 270 two-way crosses, and 180 fourway crosses were average amount of heterosis expressed as a ratio was 1.63% for livability, 5.47% for body weight at 8 weeks, 5.57% for weight gain from day old to 8 weeks and -5.98% for feed requirement. Specific combining ability were statistically significant for all of the traits examined in this study. Although the general combining ability was not significant for any of the traits, strain A appears to be superior to other strains.

An Evaluation of Whitening Effect and Microhardness on the Enamel Surface by White Toothpaste (미백치약으로 처리된 치아의 미백효과와 미세경도 변화)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of bleached tooth with white toothpaste on the whitening effect, microhardness test. Forty-four human interior teeth were randomly assigned to two groups as follows: Group 1 was used general toothpaste as control, Group 2 exposed to white toothpaste at 3 times a day for 3 minutes. The total application time was 4 weeks. After each application, all tooth were washed with distilled water and immersed in artificial saliva. The color change and microhardness were measured using CIELab Color system and microhardness tester. The data were analyzed by student t-test, using SPSS 20.0 statistical computer program (SPSS Inc., USA). The overall color changes (${\Delta}E$) by white toothpaste have a capability of the whitening efficacy by factor of 2.3 times larger compared with general toothpaste. Moreover, the application of white toothpaste did not cause any microhardness reduction on enamel surface.

The identification of novel regions for reproduction trait in Landrace and Large White pigs using a single step genome-wide association study

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate a single step genome-wide association study (ssGWAS) for identifying genomic regions affecting reproductive traits in Landrace and Large White pigs. Methods: The traits included the number of pigs weaned per sow per year (PWSY), the number of litters per sow per year (LSY), pigs weaned per litters (PWL), born alive per litters (BAL), non-productive day (NPD) and wean to conception interval per litters (W2CL). A total of 321 animals (140 Landrace and 181 Large White pigs) were genotyped with the Illumina Porcine SNP 60k BeadChip, containing 61,177 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), while multiple traits single-step genomic BLUP method was used to calculate variances of 5 SNP windows for 11,048 Landrace and 13,985 Large White data records. Results: The outcome of ssGWAS on the reproductive traits identified twenty-five and twenty-two SNPs associated with reproductive traits in Landrace and Large White, respectively. Three known genes were identified to be candidate genes in Landrace pigs including retinol binding protein 7, and ubiquitination factor E4B genes for PWL, BAL, W2CL, and PWSY and one gene, solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 6A1, for LSY and NPD. Meanwhile, five genes were identified to be candidate genes in Large White, two of which, aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A3 and leucine rich repeat kinase 1, associated with all of six reproduction traits and three genes; retrotransposon Gag like 4, transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily C member 5, and LHFPL tetraspan subfamily member 1 for five traits except W2CL. Conclusion: The genomic regions identified in this study provided a start-up point for marker assisted selection and estimating genomic breeding values for improving reproductive traits in commercial pig populations.

The Effect of Hwanggigunjung-tang on Imunosuppression induced by Methotrexate in Rat (황기건중탕(黃芪建中湯)이 Methotrexate로 유도된 흰쥐의 면역기능저하(免疫機能低下)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Hwanggigunjungtang(HGT) on white rats with deteriorated immunity caused by methotrexate. Methods: First, methotrexate was fed to the white rats once a day for 4 days. After the immune responses of the rats are deteriorated, dried extracts of HGT mixed in water was fed to the rats once a day for 14 days. And then we measured the percentage of B-cell and T-cell in peripheral blood, the percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell and CD3+CD8+ T-cell of blood sampled from spleen and peripheral region. Results: The percentage of B-cell of peripheral blood was not different statistically. The percentage of T-cell of peripheral blood was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell of peripheral blood was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD8+ T-cell of peripheral blood was decreased in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD4+ T-cell of spleen was increased significantly in HGT group as compared with control group. The percentage of CD3+CD8+ T-cell of spleen was not different statistically. Conclusion: According to the above results, HGT has an effect of increasing immune responses on white rats with deteriorated immunity caused by methotrexate.

Response of Rockfish to the Colored Lights (색광에 대한 조피볼낙의 반응)

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli(Hilgendorf) to the color lights. The experimental tank($360L{\times}50W{\times}55H\;cm$) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60 cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the location of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50 cm level. Light bulbs of 20 W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and they were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity were controlled by use of auxiliary filters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 50 minutes before they were employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in the order of blue, white, yellow and red in day time, and yellow, blue, white and red at night time. The gathering rate of fish on illumination period was not constant and fluctuated with irregularity. The difference of the gathering rate on two different colors of light was great and the difference was larger in day time than in night time.

Influence of Stocking Density with Different Light System on the Growth Performance and Behavior in Broiler Chickens

  • This study evaluated the effects of stocking density on performance and behavioral activities of 35-day-old broilers in relation to incandescent white bulb (IB) light and LED yellow and white light. A total of 1,650 day-old chicks were weighed and randomly allocated into six treatment groups in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement based on stocking density (14 birds m-2 and 22 birds m-2) and color of lights (IB; monochromatic LED yellow and white light) with five replicates for each treatment. The results showed that final body weight, weight gain and feed conversion of broilers were improved at a stocking density of 14 birds m-2 with exposure to LED lights. Similarly, broilers spent more time exhibiting inactive behavior (e.g. standing) and active behaviors (e.g. walking and walking plus pecking) under 14 birds m-2 with exposure to lights as compared that of other treatment groups. Regarding a stocking density of 22 birds m-2, broilers performance traits were negatively affected and also activities were less. The performance of broilers was not significantly altered for the main factor of different lights but broilers were less inactive (e.g less time spent sitting plus standing) and more time spent active behavior in walking under IB light than LED light. Thus, we concluded that a stocking density 14 birds m-2 with exposure to LED light significantly improved broiler performance and behavioral activity and these conditions could therefore improve the overall welfare of farmed chickens.
