Successional changes in plant composition over 15 years in a created wetland in South Korea

  • Backgrounds: The main purpose of this research was to assess changes in vegetation structure, wetland index, and diversity index for a 15-year-old created wetland in Jincheon, South Korea. The created wetland consists of four sub-wetlands: a kidney-shaped wetland, a ditch, an ecological pond, and a square wetland. Vegetation and water depth data were collected at each site in 1999 and 2013, and Shannon diversity and wetland indices were calculated. Results: The total number of plant species increased from 18 in 1999 to 50 in 2013, and the ecological pond in 1999 and the ditch in 2013 presented the highest diversity indices (2.5 and 3.2, respectively). Plant species were less diverse in 1999 than in 2013, presumably because these initial wetlands were managed periodically for water purification and installation of test beds. The proportion of wetland plants, including obligate wetland and facultative wetland species, decreased from 83 to 56%, whereas upland plants, including obligate upland and facultative upland species, increased from 17 to 44%. After ceasing water supply, water depth in all four sub-wetlands declined in 2013. Thus, upland plants established more readily at these sites, resulting in higher diversity and lower wetland indices than in 1999. Conclusions: The major floristic differences between 1999 and 2013 were an increase in the number of upland plants and a decrease in wetland species. Although wetland indices were lower in 2013, the created wetland performed important ecosystem functions by providing habitats for wetland and upland plants, and the overall species diversity was high.

HGM을 이용한 화포천 습지의 기능평가 (Assessment of Hwapo riverine wetland function using Hydrogeomorphic Approach)

  • 습지는 종 다양성이 높고 영양물질이 풍부하며 생산성이 높은 생태계로서 수문학적으로나 생태학적으로 여러 가지 기능을 수행하고 있다. 본 연구는 습지 기능을 평가하는데 이용되는 다양한 평가 방법중 하나인 HGM (Hydrogeomorphic)을 적용하여 화포습지에 대한 기능평가를 실시하였다. HGM방법은 하나의 기준습지를 선정한 후 대상습지와의 비교를 통해 습지의 기능을 지수화하여 평가하는 방법이다. 본 연구에서는 람사르 협약에 등록된 우포늪을 기준습지로 선정하여 화포천 습지의 기능을 평가한 결과 대부분의 기능이 0.6점 이상으로 우포늪과 비교하여 비교적 긍정적인 기능지수의 값을 보여주었다. 이는 화포천 습지가 수문학적, 생지화학적, 식물서식처, 동물서식처 기능을 수행하고 있고 보전 및 관리를 한다면 보다 더 효과적으로 기능을 수행할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

하천습지의 식생학적 자연도 평가 (Assessment of Degree of Naturalness of Vegetation on the Riverine Wetland)

  • This study was carried out to suggest the baseline data necessary for vegetation restoration at riverine wetland within stream corridor. We used the prevalence index for wetland assessment by applying the method of weighted averages with index values based on five hydrophyte indicator status as defined by estimated probability occurred in wetland. We selected near nature and urbanized reach of Gap and Yanghwa streams as experimental site. Although two sites have some different disturbance and characteristics of watershed, they showed that similarity of vegetation community including three dominant species - Salix koreensis, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus - was very high. But in case of Yanghwa stream, various kinds of emergent plants along wetted condition were distinctly occurred, resulted from difference of hydrological regime and substrate, etc. Degree of naturalness of vegetation at the sampled areas indicated that near nature area of Gap stream and all area of Yanghwa stream were fitted as riverine wetland, while urbanized area of Gap stream has changed into upland condition. In conclusion assessment system using prevalence index would be considered an effective method for evaluating of natural states of riverine wetland, but further integrated consideration of physical, hydrological, and biological factors of stream process, and also with considering the difference between those qualitative data of vegetation community.

HGM을 이용한 용담댐습지의 기능평가 연구 (Functional Assessment of Yongdam Dam-wetland by HGM)

  • 댐 상류지역 및 주변지역에 위치하고 있는 습지는 댐의 수질개선, 동식물의 서식처 확보 등과 같은 생태보전 및 경관 제공 기능을 제공할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 댐이 지니고 있는 습지의 역할을 검토하기 위하여 수문지형학적 방법인 HGM을 이용하여 댐습지의 기능을 평가하였다. 본 연구에서는 우포늪과 보령댐을 기준습지로 선정하여 용담댐의 기능을 평가하였으며, 그 결과 전체적인 기능이 0.6점 이상으로 나타났다. 이는 댐습지와 자연습지를 비교했을 때, 댐습지가 자연습지의 약 60%의 기능을 수행하는 것을 나타낸다. 따라서 댐에 위치하고 있는 습지의 관리와 보전이 잘 이루어진다면 보다 더 효과적으로 기능을 수행할 수 있을 것으로 판단 된다.

HGM을 이용한 질날늪 기능평가 연구 (Functional Assessment of Jilnalnup Wetland by HGM)

  • Wetlands occupy an important ecological position on the earth, carrying out very important functions and roles both ecologically and hydrologically. However, due to past industrialization, not only wetland areas but also the biodiversity of organisms has severely decreased due to several artificial interferences and damage as wetlands began to be perceived simply as targets for development and reclamation. However in recent times, with the importance of wetlands coming to the fore, the assessment of the function and value of wetlands is being made for their wise use and systematic maintenance. Accordingly, this study targeted the Jilnal Wetlands located in Haman, Gyeongnam, and conducted a functional appraisal of this wetland using the modified HGM Model which was modified & developed appropriately for the actual conditions of our country. The result of its appraisal by selecting the Upo Wetland as the reference wetland, which is a criterion of the index, showed a comparatively positive functional index with 0.89 of the Upo Wetland average. This means that the Jilnal Wetland carrys out more than 89% of the functioning of the Upo Wetland. In this regard, it is thought that the Jilnal Wetland could carry out the wetland functioning equivalent to that of the Upo Wetland through a little more systematic management.

신속평가방법(Rapid Assessment Method)을 이용한 습지평가 및 평가항목의 개선 (Wetland Assessment and Improvement of Evaluation Index Using Rapid Assessment Method (RAM))

  • 국내 습지의 가치와 등급을 평가하고 적용방안을 고찰하기 위해, 경상남도에 위치한 146개 습지를 대상으로 신속평가방법 (Rapid Assessment Method)을 이용한 습지평가를 수행하였다. 각 습지에서 평가된 8개 대항목과 주변 피복 비율 간 관계를 분석하기 위해 Self-Organizing Map(SOM) 알고리즘을 이용하여 패턴분석을 실시하였다. 총 8개의 항목 중, '식생다양성 야생동물 서식처'와 '미적 레크레이션' 항목 점수가 가장 높았으며, 대부분 2~3등급의 가치를 가지는 것으로 평가되었다. SOM 분석 결과, 식생다양성 야생동물 서식처 항목이 높은 습지에는 대부분 어류 양서 파충류 서식처 항목이 낮은 성향을 보였는데, 이는 어류 등은 식생다양성이 높은 지역을 선호하지 않기 때문인 것으로 사료된다. 습지 내 수생식물의 높은 풍부도는 미적인 부분을 충족시키기 때문에 미적 레크레이션 점수가 높은 습지는 대부분 식생다양성 야생동물 서식처가 높았다. 또한, 침식조절 기능의 경우 홍수 저장 조절 기능과 밀접하게 관련되며, 침식조절 기능이 높은 습지는 홍수 저장 조절 기능 또한 높은 경향을 가진다. 국내 습지에 신속평가방법을 적용한 결과, 일부 항목이 국내 습지 특성이나 범위에 맞지 않아 개선이 요구되며, 습지 보전 측면에서 '접근성'이나 '시각적 개방성' 등 항목들은 점수 체제의 전환이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 신속평가방법을 국내 습지에 적용하기 위해서는 항목 내 평가기준의 조정 혹은 세분화, 현실화가 필요한 것으로 판단된다. 향후 신속평가방법을 이용한 등급화는 습지의 보전이나 관리 방안 마련에 중요한 지표로서 활용될 수 있으며, 잔존하는 습지를 보존하여 멸종위기종 등 생물상 유지에 크게 기여할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

시화호 연안습지 식생의 공간 분포 분석 (The Spatial Distribution Analysis of Coastal Wetland Vegetation in Sihwa Lake)

  • Human activity has been the major threat to wetlands. Agriculture, industrial development, and urban and suburban sprawl have caused the greatest losses of coastal wetlands. In fact, riceland agriculture, because of the flooding that goes with it, provides some additional wetland habitat not otherwise available. The biggest current source of loss for freshwater coastal wetlands is from urban sprawl. In this study, spatial analysis method such as landscape index were applied to Sihwa area in Ansan city. The SMA (Spectral Mixture Analysis) method using Landsat image showed the change distribution of wetland vegetation from 1996 to 2004. The southern part of Sihwa wetland have been changed with Suda japonica of 24% and reed vegetation of 34% on coastal wetland which were covered with tidal flat.

화포천 습지보호지역 토지 매수 우선순위 산정 - 깃대종 서식지 적합성 지수를 고려하여 - (Prioritizing Land Purchase in Hwapocheon Wetland Protection Area - Based on Habitat Suitability Index for Flagship Species -)

  • This study was conducted to prioritize land purchase in Hwapocheon wetland protection area by reflecting the conservation value of wetlands considering HSI(Habitat Suitability Index) for flagship species. As a result of this study, the flagship species, Oriental White Stork and Been Goose, which can represent the Hwapocheon wetland protection area, were selected through selection criteria and expert feedback. Based on the habitat requirements of the selected flagship species, SI(Suitability Index) for the flagship species was reviewed and the conservation value of wetlands was assessed. The conservation value of the wetlands was divided into five grades from very high to very low. The areas with high conservation value were mainly distributed around wetlands and waters in upstream and downstream of Hwapocheon wetland protection area. The land purchase priorities were divided into five grades by overlapping the thematic maps of the conservation value of wetlands, the economics, and the urgency of restoration. The arable lands which can disrupt wetland ecosystems are analyzed as priority areas where priority purchasing is required. Relatively well-preserved wetlands and areas have low land purchase priorities. This study is meaningful in that biodiversity is considered in land purchase priorities.

AHP를 이용한 산지습지 가능지역 평가 (An Assessment of the Potential Area of Mountainous Wetland Using AHP)

  • The purpose of this research is to assess potential area of mountainous wetland by GIS and AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). Mountainous wetland is topographically located at high altitude, so it's difficult to approach for researchers. And, it's difficult to investigate systematically because of the insufficient information of mountainous wetland. Therefore, it's necessary to study on potential area of mountainous wetland for systematic and efficient investigation. This research selected slope, wetting index, land-cover map and soil map as assessment items indicating environmental characteristics of mountainous wetland and established them by GIS DB. And, spatial value of mountainous wetland for each assessment item was drawn by existing investigation data and overlap analysis of mountainous wetland. Based on the numerical results of each assessment item, a survey was conducted and relative importance for each assessment item was decided by AHP. As the result, slope was the highest as 0.550 and ground coverage was the lowest as 0.083. The subject of this research was Yangsan-si and Ulsan of Gyeongnam and an analysis was conducted for mountainous wetland in those research areas. As the result, all of wetland was distributed in the range of potential area. And, field survey and literature search were conducted for the point that the distribution of mountainous wetland is expected. As the result, mountainous wetland was distributed. Therefore, mountainous wetland should be excavated through the results of this research and it should be helpful for effective investigation as providing information necessary to the following studies on mountainous wetland.

MNDWI와 NDVI의 통합을 통한 내륙습지의 육화현상 추적: 우포늪을 사례로 (Monitoring the Desiccation of Inland Wetland by Combining MNDWI and NDVI: A Case Study of Upo Wetland in South Korea)

  • 본 연구는 육화 추세를 추적하는 과정에서 MNDWI (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index)와 NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)를 통합한 접근의 실용성을 평가하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 사례 연구지역인 우포늪에 대해 MNDWI는 수분 지수에 민감하여, 수문 객체는 더욱 강조하고 습윤 토양의 변화를 추적하는 등 수문 객체 외의 요소들은 더욱 강하게 배제하는 근거를 제시하였다. NDVI는 식생의 수령, 식생밀도에 대한 정보를 제시하고, 수분객체와 다른 토지 피복 유형(식생, 건물, 도로 등)을 가시적으로 추적하였다. NDVI와 MNDWI의 통합접근을 통해 산출되는 정량적이고 거시적인 정보는 NDVI와 MNDWI의 변화가 육화에 대한 정량적인 근거로 활용될 수 있다는 의미있는 결과를 보여준다. 본 연구는 향후 내륙습지의 육화에 대한 장기적 모니터링과 전반적인 육화 대응방안을 도출하는 과정에서 NDVI, MNDWI 통합접근의 근거가 되는 기초자료를 제공하였다.
