  • This study investigated the effects of bifidus enhancer yogurt (BEY) on loperamide-induced constipation in rats. The bifidus enhancer, made of rice-DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles), improved proliferation of bifidobacteria (BB-12). Male SD rats were induced with constipation using loperamide and were then used to test the effectiveness of BEY in relieving constipation. The rats were divided into four groups: normal group (NOR), loperamide-treated group (LOP), bifidus enhancer yogurt and loperamide-treated group (L-BEY), and commercial yogurt and loperamide-treated group (L-CY). Treatment of loperamide reduced the wet weight and water content of fecal pellets, but increased the number of fecal pellets in the distal colon. Meanwhile, the fecal weight of the L-BEY group showed an increase of 43% and 23% versus the LOP and L-CY group, respectively. Also, the fecal water content in the L-BEY group was 14.5% and 6.8% higher than that in the LOP and L-CY group, respectively. In addition, the L-BEY group had the fewest fecal pellets in the distal colon. In the serum lipid parameters, the LOP group had a HDL/total cholesterol ratio that was 43% lower than the NOR group, but the L-BEY group had 27% lower than NOR group. These results suggest that bifidus enhancer yogurt has superior effects when it comes to relieving loperamide-induced constipation in rats.

  • Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in about 400km section at 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. This wetting collapse problem for the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills, has been recognized by several researchers. For this wetting settlement problem, we showed the test results carried out with 4 fill materials. These tests were performed under the condition that the fill materials were inundated at the first wetting. Subsequently, in this study, we investigated the long-term settlement characteristics of the fill materials under the repeated partial wetting and rising of the ground water table happend by rainfall.

  • It studies that effect of limestone of physicochemical characteristic on the performance of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and application examination for technology of wet type FGD process and to utilize the limestone in Donghae-Samcheok. The experiment method was measured total neutralizing capability (TNC) using the lab scale experimental apparatus based on the HCl titration test. The results of TNC of limestone samples were more dependent on the physical characteristics including particle size rather than chemical compositions such as CaO content and particle size of limestone get smaller, TNC is increased.

  • The occurrence of the ventricular fibrillation is directly dependent on the magnitude and duration of the current. The current which flows through the human body is proportional to the touch voltage applied across the body and is in inverse proportion to the impedances in the circuit. The circuit impedances consist of human body impedance, line impedance, equipment impedance, earth terminal impedance and impedance of shoes which a person put on. The impedance of shoes greatly affect the severity of the electric accidents. The human body impedances relevant to the contact areas, contact conditions, current paths and touch voltages are already determined in the IEC 60479-1. However, the impedance of shoes is ignored or substituted by a simple value because of the absence of the sufficient data. For example, the impedance of shoes plus ground contact resistance is postulated to be $1,000{\Omega}$ in the IEC 61200-612. In IEEE 80, the shoe resistance plus ground contact resistance is assumed to be bare foot with ${\rho}/4b{\Omega}$. In this paper, we measured and analyzed the impedance of shoes with respect to conditions such as applied weight, environment variables and voltages. The results showed that the impedance of shoes is dependent on environment variables regardless of the types of shoes. Most of shoes showed the correlation with the applied force, whereas a few shoes showed characteristics related to the applied voltage. In terms of severity of electric shock, one thirds of test samples indicated to be dangerous in saltwater conditions.

  • This study was initiated to understand the mechanism of selective toxicity of diazinon and carbofuran to killifish and loach. Conventional LC50 was calculated from fish test. IC50 with acetylcholinesterase activity was estimated using whole body and wet brain homogenate of the two fish species. Acetylcholinesterase activity of killifish was approximately twice as high as that of loach. The selective toxicity of diazinon to killifish and loach was partly (14 : 4) explained by the IC50 of diazoxon, a toxic metabolite of diazinon. IC50 of carbofuran also partly (14 : 3.4) contributed to the selectivity. These result suggested that the enzymatic method might be utilized as a screening tool for the chemicals affecting fish species of environmental concern with certain limitations which should be overcome in future studies.

  • This paper deals with the correlations between the results of the physical property tests and the mechanical property tests for estimating the mechanical indexes by the physical property test results. The soil samples were taken at changweon area, Gyeon-gsangnam-do, where the structures would be placed on the alluvial clay foundation. The outcomes of the study are as follows: 1. Judging from casagrande's plasticity chart, it is considered that the almost all soil samples belong to inorganic silty clay with medium plasticity (clay 14∼62%, silt 36∼73%, sand 1∼29%). The specific gravities are between 2.61 and 2.72, the wet unit weights 1.53g/㎤ and 1.93g/㎤, the liquid limits 28% and 51%, the plastic limits 15% and 31%, the plastic indexes 7% and 27%, the natural moisture contents 33% and 64%. 2. The unconfined compression strengths are between 0.07kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.77kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the cohesions 0.04kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.37kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the internal friction angles 0$^{\circ}$ and 9$^{\circ}$. 3. The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios are between 0.68 and 1.68, the precompression loads 0.27kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 1.15kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the compression indexes 0.12 and 0.59. 4. The correlations between the results of the physical property tests and the mechanical property tests for the soil samples are presented as follows: rt=0.011 (203-wn), Cc=0.025 (LL-27.2), Cc=0.46 (e0-0.58), Cc=0.013 (wn-23.2), C=0.021+qu/2.08, qu=2.268rt-3.635

  • Micro- and nanoscale texturing and control of surface energy have been considered for superhydrophobicity on polymer and silicon. However these surfaces have been reported to be difficult to meet the robustness and transparency requirements for further applications, from self cleaning windows to biochip technology. Here we provided a novel method to fabricate a nearly superhydrophobic soda-lime glass using two-step method. The first step involved wet etching process to fabricate micro-sale patterns on soda-lime glass. The second step involved application of $SiO_x$-incorporated DLC to generate high intrinsic contact angle on the surface using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. To investigate the effect of surface roughness, we used both positive and negative micro-scale patterns on soda-limeglass, which is relatively hard for surface texturing in comparison to quartz or Pyrex glasses due to the presence of impurities, but cheaper. For all samples we tested the static wetting angle and transparency before and after 100 cycles of wear test using woolen steel. The surface morphology is observed using optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results shows that negative patterns had a greater wear resistance while the hydrophobicity was best achieved using positive patterns having static contact angle up to 140 deg. with about 80% transparency. The overall experiment shows that positive patterns at etching time of 1 min shows the optimum transparency and hydrophobicity. The optimization of micro-scale pattern to achieve a robust, transparent, superhydrophobic soda-lime glass will be further investigated in the future works.

  • This research investigated the hygrothermal effect on the strength of bolt jointed section and moisture contents of composites exposed to hygrothermal environment for composite aircraft radome. The decrease in strength in the test environment is mainly attributed to the change in the material properties of the matrix due to temperature and moisture. The composite specimens were tested in three different environmental conditions: RTD(room temperature and dry), CTD(cold temperature and dry) and ETW(elevated temperature and wet). The failure mode of the bolt jointed composite specimens were studied using tests and finite element analysis. Finite element analysis reasonably predicted the failure load and mode of the joints. A reliability-based design was carried out for the bolt jointed composites of radome.

  • Among the phases of flight operations pilots feel much pressure in landing segment. There is a number of factors affecting landing safety while pilots reduce aircraft speeds and make a touchdown and stop completely. If runway length is sufficient for landing, there maybe is no problem. But it is not the case all the time. So it is necessary to confirm whether landing performance is within limits or not. Required landing distance is actual landing distance demonstrated by flight test pilot plus allowances for average airline pilots. FAR(Federal Aviation Regulations) AFM certification is based upon manual landing for dry and wet runway. Other runway conditions are not the certification basis. JAR dictates even contaminated/slippery runway is included by prescribed allowances. Automatic landing is not certification basis, so actual landing distances are provided. In this paper I would like to analyze distance allowances included in each type of runway condition. In addition there is no regulation about allowances for specific runway condition, I would suggest adequate allowances for that case.

  • Fish aggregating devices(FAD) or artificial fish reefs deployed in the ocean space have been developed in various forms. The objective of FAD is to aggregate, cultivate and proliferate aquatic resources by making changes in ocean flows around it. developing spawning grounds, improving feeding areas and protecting larvae and juveniles. Most floating fish aggregating devices(FFAD) are in the form of surface buoys or subsurface buoys with a single point mooring system(SPMS). The mooring line of SPMS for the secure positions of FFAD is expected to keep great stresses as a result of the harsh ocean environment. Laboratory static tests on synthetic fiber ropes used for the SPMS were run. The Nylon wet rope specimen tests under increasing-and-decreasing loads showed about 20% strength drop. Also the logarithmic creep-tie behavior of fiber ropes was observed in the constant load test and compared with Flessner's formula.
