  • Two kinds of oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) 316L stainless steel were manufactured using a wet mixing process(wet) and a mechanical alloying method (MA). An MA 316L ODS was prepared by a mixing of metal powder and a mechanical alloying process. A wet 316L ODS was manufactured by a wet mixing with 316L stainless steel powder. A solution of yttrium nitrate was dried after being in the wet 316L ODS alloy. The results showed that carbon and oxygen were effectively reduced during the degassing process before the hydroisostatic process (HIP) in both alloys. It appeared that the effect of HIP treatment on increase in impact energy was pronounced in the MA 316L ODS alloy. The MA 316L ODS alloy showed a higher yield strength and a smaller elongation, when compared to the wet 316L ODS alloy. This seemed to be attributed to the enhancement of bonding between oxide and matrix particles from HIP and to the presence of a finer oxide of about 20 nm from the MA process in the MA 316L ODS alloy.

  • Dry processes like evaporation and sputtering in vacuum chamber are difficult to make a uniform, large area and high quality film on thin PET substrate because of PET degradation and bad adhesion. On the other hand, wet processes like electro or electroless plating have complex processes and require high environmental cost. In this study, we successfully prepared $2{\mu}m$ Zn/Cu/Ni multilayers coated on $12{\mu}m$ polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by using dry-wet mixing processes. Their surface electric resistances were evaluated around $0.2{\Omega}$ by using 4 probe measurements. Furthermore, their corrosion resistance also evaluated by natural potential test and compared with other wet, dry and mixing process samples.

There was statistically significant difference by process. Urinary MEK concentrations of wetmixing, wet-coating, dry-mixing, dry-coating and printing were $0.93mg/{\ell}$, $0.70mg/{\ell}$, $3.29mg/{\ell}$, $3.29mg/{\ell}$, and $1.06mg/{\ell}$, respectively, and total geometric mean was $1.25mg/{\ell}$. There was statistically significant difference by process. Urinary MEK 3. The concentration of airborne toluene by process was 0.35ppm for wet-mixing, 0.42ppm for wet-coating, 2.95ppm for dry-mixing, 11.67ppm for dry-coating, 4.88ppm for printing, 1.24ppm for total. There was statistically significant difference by process. Urinary hippuric acid concentrations of wet-mixing, wet-coating, dry-mixing, dry-coating and printing were 0.24g/g creatinine, 0.21g/g creatinine, 0.34g/g creatinine, 0.52g/g creatinine, and 0.29g/g creatinine, respctively and total geometric mean was 0.28g/g creatinine. There was statistically significant difference by process. 4. No. of exceeded KPEL was 40 workers(40.8%) for DMF(10ppm), 1 worker(1.0%) for MEK(200ppm), and no worker for toluene(100ppm). No. of exceeded KBEI was 62 workers(63.3%) for urinary NMF($40mg/{\ell}$), 29 workers(29.6%) for urinary MEK, 1 worker(1.0%) for urinary hippuric acid. 5. The regression equations were Log(NMF)=0.4094*Log(DMF)+1.3587(r=0.4516) for DMF, Log(MEKU)=0.1859*Log(MEK)-0.0324(r=0.3303) for MEK, Log(HA)=0.2106*Log(Toluene)-0.5685(r=0.4497) for toluene. Synthetic leather factory workers expose to 3 kinds of organic solvents which are DMF, MEK and toluene. Their urinary NMF and MEK levels were higher than their concentration levels through respiratory. It seems that the urinary levels were affected skin absorption for working habit and alcohol intake.

  • The strengthening efficiency of biopolymer treated soil depends on biopolymer type, concentration ratio, soil type, initial water content, curing time and mixing method. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of xanthan gum (XG) treated kaolinite were investigated through compaction test, Atterberg limit test, triaxial test and unconfined compression test. The results indicated that the optimum water content (OWC) increased from 30.3% of untreated clay to 33.5% of 5% XG treated clay, while the maximum dry density has a slight increase from 13.96 kg/m3 to 14 kg/m3 of 0.2% XG treated clay and decrease to 2.7 kg/m3 of 5% XG treated clay. Meanwhile, the plastic limit of XG treated clay increased with the increase of XG concentration, while 0.5% XG treated clay can be observed the maximum liquid limit with 79.5%. Moreover, there are the ideal water content about 1.3-1.5 times of the optimum water content achieving the maximum dry density and curing time to obtain the maximum compressive strength for different XG contents, which the UCS is 1.52 and 2.07 times of the maximum UCS of untreated soil for 0.5% and 1% XG treated clay, respectively. In addition, hot-dry mixing can achieve highest UCS than other mixing methods (e.g., dry mixing, wet mixing and hot-wet mixing).

  • Austenitic oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) stainless steel was fabricated using a wet mixing process without a mechanical milling in order to reduce contaminations of impurities during their fabrication process. Solution of yttrium nitrate was dried after a wet mixing with 316L stainless steel powder. Carbon and oxygen contents were effectively reduced by this wet processing. Microstructural analysis showed that coarse yttrium silicates of about 150 nm were formed in austenitic ODS steels with a silicon content of about 0.8 wt%. Wet-processed austenitic ODS steel without silicon showed higher yield strength by the presence of finer oxide of about 20 nm.

  • This study was to explore the characteristics of 6 mole% CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ prepared by wet chemical methods. The results of the experiments were as follows: 1. The powder calcined at 1000$^{\circ}$-110$0^{\circ}C$ was partly agglomerated. The morphology of agglomerate was spherical of 0.5-1$\mu{m}$ in size for Hot Petroleum Drying Method, chain-like of 1-2$\mu{m}$ for Freeze Drying Method, and irreqular of 2-3$\mu{m}$ for Coprecipitation Method. 2. Optimum calcining conditions for powder prepared by wet chemical methods were found: 110$0^{\circ}C$, 2h in air for Hot Petroleum Drying Method and Freeze Drying Method, and 100$0^{\circ}C$, 2h in air for Coprecipitation Method. 3. When specimen was calcined at 1000$^{\circ}$-110$0^{\circ}C$ in air for 2h and then sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$ in air for 4h, the specimens prepared by wet chemical methods showed a high sintered density (94% of theoretical density) and a low open porosity (<0.8%); however, the sintered density of the specimen prepared by Oxide Wet Mixing Method was 90%. 4. The amount of cubic phase of sintered body prepared by wet chemical methods was observed to be higher than the one prepared by Oxide Wet Mixing Method. 5. It was found that Hot petroleum Drying Method, Freeze Drying Method and Coprecipitation Method were nearly the same in respect of the results of stabilization grade and sintered density of CaO-stabilized $ZrO_2$.

  • When producing recycled asphalt mix, it is important that the old binder of reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP) should be well melted during blending in the mixer. The recycled asphalt mix is produced by instant mixing(IM) of all materials(RAP, virgin asphalt and new aggregates) all together in the mixer. However, in the same recycled mix, the binder around RAP aggregate was found to show higher oxidation level than the binder coated around the virgin aggregate because the old binder of RAP was not rejuvenated properly while instant mixing. The partially-rejuvenated RAP binder is assumed to be a high stiffness point in IM recycled mix. In this study, the stage mixing(SM) method was introduced; blending RAP and virgin asphalt for the first stage, and then mixing all together with hot new aggregates for the second stage. To compare the effect of the two mixing methods on moisture resistance of recycled mixes, a statistical t-test was performed between SM and IM using indirect tensile strength(ITS) and tensile strength ratio(TSR). Three conditioning methods were used; a 16-h freezing and then 24-h submerging, 48-h submerging, and 72-h submerging in 60℃ water. It was found that the TSR(=ITSwet/ITSdry) values of the mixes prepared by SM was clearly higher than the IM mixes, and coefficients of variation of SM mixes were lower than the IM mixes. It was also observed that the ITSWET of SM was significantly different from the IM at α=0.05 level by statistical t-test. The ITSWET of SM mix was reduced less than the IM mix in severer conditioned mixes. Therefore, it was concluded that the stage mixing method was an important blending technique for producing better-quality of recycled asphalt mixes, which would show higher moisture resistance than the recycled mixes produced by conventional instant mixing.

  • The Construction policy of government ever since 1970s have brought the economical growth, but has been causing environmental problems. Most roads were paved either asphalt concrete or portland cement concrete. These types of pavements has caused to rise temperature by making local heat islands in urban during summer time. Recently the wet-mixing solidified soil pavement, a kind of soil-cement, has developed and has been applied to the environment-oriented pavement. The solidified soil wet-mixed is placed on the subgrade along with asphalt concrete and portland cement concrete. Thermistors are laid in these field test pavements. The temperature gradients of these pavements are automatically measured with time. As the results of this test, the equation estimating surface temperature of pavement is proposed by analyzing measured temperature data. It is shown that the temperature change within the surface layer due to the change of air temperature is the greatest in the asphalt mixture and the least in the solidified soil mixture. Since it is proven that this wet-mixing solidified soil pavement emit less radiant heat than other existed pavements. Therefore this type of pavement can be successfully applied to the roads, such as walks, parkways, and bikeways, which are required to be human-friendly and environment-oriented.

  • Wet/Dry phenomena typically incorporate a number of complex flow mechanism. These include a momentum transfer and turbulent mixing caused by the delivery of water. However currently available one dimensional schemes applicable to wet/dry process cannot effectively simulate such process. Two dimensional finite element model, SU/PG, is used to simulate complex flow in this study. The Wetted Area Method in SU/PG allows elements to transition gradually between wet and dry states. The model is applicable to a straight river reach with irregular bathymetry. Wet/dry calculation using the wetted area method can simulate simple numerical test. The computed results of velocity vectors and water depth agree with those of observed. The methodology Presented in this study will contributed to two-dimensional wet/dry analysis in a river in this country.
