  • Gilles Deleuze is a philosopher who replaces the world of representation defined as supremacy of identity with the contemporary reason of non-representation in the history of western philosophy that wants to transcend Plato. Deleuze developed his own philosophical concept through philosophical reason and encounter with arts, for which reason he exerted a great influence on artists and architects in diverse fields. Particularly, 'Logic of Sensation' published in 1981 considers the non-representation painting approach through Francis Bacon's painting theory defined as 'invisible force's visibility'. And it is considered that SANAA's architecture among many contemporary architects accepted the essence of Deleuze's philosophy and continuously reflects it on projects. Hence, objective of the present study is to consider how the non-representation constituting a root for Deleuze's reason has been indicated in paintings and architecture through examining the works by Bacon and SANAA. First, a theoretical consideration will be directed to non-representation, followed by an analysis of Bacon's painting works and SANAA's architecture projects from the viewpoints of the force of isolation, the force of transformation, the force of dissipation and the force of time dealt with by Deleuze in 'Logic of Sensation'. Finally, through such analysis, the characteristics of Deleuze's non-representation indicated in architecture and paintings will be derived.

  • This paper examines the conceptual shift of wilderness and its legacy to the contradictory view of nature in landscape architecture tradition. In hunting and gathering societies, there was no dichotomy between the cultivated environment and wilderness. 'Wilderness' is a word whose first usage marks the transition from a hunting-gathering economy to an agricultural society. We can identify two archetypal responses to wilderness: classical and romantic. In the classical perspective, wilderness is something to be feared-an area of waste and desolation. The conquest of wilderness and the creation of usable places is a mark of civilization. For the romantics, in contrast, untouched wilderness has the greatest significance; it has a purity that human contact tends to sully and degrade. Wilderness for the romantics is a place to revere, a place of deep spiritual significance, and an object of aesthetic experience. In the Western world, the classical position predominated until the last two hundred years when the romantic concept began to gain more ground. The shift was made possible by the change in the way nature is understood. Modernity and modern science objectified nature. The transition of the concept of wilderness exemplifies the objectification and pictorialization of nature. Wilderness in the modern era is not different from the pastoral landscape which can be controlled by landscape architects.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate Korean architects' perception of the Modern Movement in architecture in the West during the Japanese colonial period, by analyzing two Korean publications in the 1930s: Park Dongjin's 'Present Architectural Tendency' (Dong-A Ilbo, March 1931) and Hong Yunsick's 'Trend in the Thought of Moderne Baukunst' (Chogwang, September 1937). As a result of the investigation, it is confirmed that the two men welcomely accepted the universal modernity, regarding the rational and functional - rather than subjective expressions of the individual - as the key to modern architecture. Although their perception of the Modern Movement in Western architecture was inevitably superficial due to the limited condition of the Japanese colonial period in Korea, there was an obvious advancement in the latter's perception from the former's, reflecting the progress in knowledge of it over the six and a half years between the two. Therefore, it is argued that their 1930s' writings are meaningful as the first Korean publications that illustrate how Korean architectural circles perceived the contemporary architectural movement in the West.

  • Objectives: Current information & communication technology is advancing very rapidly and the ripple effects are spreading all over society traditional Korean medicine (TKM) is no exception. We draw up afuture plan and target system's architecture of KIOM's OASIS to follow the information change and reinforce the supporting infra for TKM research. Methods: First, we analyzed the information circumstances of western and eastern medicine, both overseas and domestic, especially investigating the detailed changes domestically. Second, we grasped the present conditions of OASIS and compared it with other information portals. Finally, we drew a future plan and system architecture from the analysis results. Results: First, the information status of western medicine is much more advanced than TKM's, and overseas information circumstances are likewise more developed than domestics. Second, we found that OASIS is performing the central research infra role well in TKM. Finally we designed an information system architecture which is composed of an infra layer, an application layer and a service layer. Conclusion: We must integrate information materials such as literature, research manpower, facilities and standards to make TKM's knowledge portal successful. In detail, we have to make TKM's information classification code, build up the electronic TKM library and offer complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) trends.

  • Personal distance is one of the basic and important concepts in the field of Environmental Psychology in influencing personal space, visible or invisible territoriality and psychological carrying capacity of contemporary urban dwellers. This study aims to analyze the bench users' behaviour and personal distances in urban parks for the first time in Korea, one of the representative landscape spaces in urban areas. For these purposes, this study has adopted a blind observation and pictorial analysis for bench users in Yeouido Park in Seoul. The main results of this study show that the average interpersonal distance between female and male(intimate relationship) is 47.5cm, the distance between female and female is 53.2cm, and the distance between male and male is 70.3cm. These results mostly support the previous western study results, but the interpersonal space and territoriality of Koreans in urban parks may be smaller than that for western societies.

  • The objective of this study is to test the applicability of the Information processing model suggested by Kaplan to the preferences of Korean people as well as to investigate the preference patterns of Korean people and the influencing factors on Korean preferences for the landscape. Photo - questionnaire survey was conducted twice to collect the data concerning the landscape preferences. The samples of the first survey were selected from the citizens of Seoul and the students of Seoul National University. The first survey focused on the preference patterns of Korean people while the emphasis of the second survey was given to the test of information processing model and the influencing factors on the preferences of Korean people. The samples of second survey were also selected from the students of Seoul National University. The photos in the photo - questionnaire for the first survey included the scenes representing both three landscape styles(Korean, Japanese and Western styles)and three landscape qualities such as the layout of space, the use of landscape plants and the use of stones and rocks. For the second survey, four informational factors such as complexity, coherence, legibility and mystery were selected for inclusion in the photos of photo - questionnaire. Respondents for both survey were asked to respond their preferences on the five - point Likers scale. The results of the study suggested that four informational factors influence significantly the preferences of Korean students. The study indicated that both the citizens of Seoul and the students of Seoul National University prefer water and vegetation to rock among the contents of landscape. Among the landscape styles, Japanese landscape style was most preferred and Western landscape style was more preferred than Korean traditional landscape style. In addition to informational factors, it was found that the contents of landscape and landscape style were also major influencing factors on the landscape preferences. The socio - economic backgrounds of respondents such as age, foreign travel experience, income, residency before the age 14, familiarity and respondent's experties in landscape architecture seemed to Influence the landscape preferences.

  • The formation of Chinese Town in Malacca of Malaysia and Singapore would explain that Chinese gradually played an important role of commerce and urban service according to the Western European advance to southeast Asia and the construction of colonial cities from the 16th century to 19th and massed residence in many cites of southeast Asia. Chinese was usually separated from the Western European by western colonial policy and city planning. Common architectural characteristics in Chinese towns of Malaysia can refer to the transmission of the Chinese architectural material, the combination of dwelling and commerce in a house and the space organization centered on a court or an air well in the narrow and long site, lying adjacent to street etc. The Chinese dwellings in Malaysia rooted with Chinese settlement in southeast Asia. The Chinese dwellings was not always a shop on 1th floor and a dwelling on 2nd floor before the 19th century. But as Chinese immigration and commercial activity progressed in earnest in the early of 19th century, the row house of Chinese for dwelling was autonomously changed to two functional shophouse for dwelling and commerce. Chinese row house can refer to the use of Malay regional material, change of symmetrical Chinese traditional housing type by the narrow and long site and the tendency of the eclectic elevation of Western and China. Another architectural characteristics of the shophouse is an appearance of the continuous verandah with a cover regulated by Stamford Raffles in Singapore. This regulation was applied to architecture in Chinese Town as Stamford Raffles constructed Singapore. It was spread to South China reversely and became the regulation of streetscape for the modern city. Shophouse of Chinese towns in Southeast Asia and south China can be understood by context of Chinese immigration, colonialism, housing type of commerce and dwelling and the Western European city planning.

  • To begin with the purpose of protecting human life from the exterior in the prehistoric age, architecture was nothing but a shelter without any relation between the exterior and the intoner. But, today, with the community developed, architecture can not be resisted with her own function and have to change of the reciprocal one. Different with the oriental architecture, we can see, western architecture has developed in the stream of the form. The main idea of the space in terms of the relation, above all, is mostly concerned with relation between the exterior and the interior like between the architecture and the city. So the role of the facade in depth is the intermediation which consist to the relation in the exterior and interior of architecture. Considering a relation between two elements; the exterior and the interior, we can be inspired in the case of paintings, especially in the works of the Paul $C\acute{e}zanne$. $C\acute{e}zanne$ originally show the depth of space by different disposition of three parts : the background, the objects and intermediate space between the former. For instance, different with the other painters who put the background rear in the canvas and objects in the front of the background, $C\acute{e}zanne$ took the background and objects a same value and assure a depth in space by virtue of the intermediate space. Finally, by putting the background in forward of layer in the canvas and objects situated behind the background, the depth of the space can be occurred. Same as the idea of $C\acute{e}zanne$, Giuseppe Terragni and jean Nouvelle in architecture also intensify their effects through the activation of intermediate space between the interior facade and exterior frame. Not limited in the relation with the architecture and the city, space in relation gives us a higher quality of architectural promenade in depth.

  • The aim of this study is to understand the direction of planning for regeneration based on six representative cases of western part of Seoul that were regenerated from the unpleasant facilities since the 20th century. In particular, the similarities and differences were derived by analyzing the characteristics of the history and the location in terms of the 1st establishment and the regeneration in each cases. As a result, looking the tendency to regenerate the unpleasant facility, it can be seen that there is a correlation between the historical and the locational context when establishing and regenerating. Considering the distinct characteristic of the Location and the history of establishment & regeneration, we could classify the characteristics of public facilities as extroverted tendency and intrinsic tendency analysed by a geographic and an architectural, a programmatic aspects. Therefore, when planning the project regenerated from unpleasant facilities, it should be set considering the locational context and the historical context of establishment & regeneration.
