  • Practice evidenced by reliable knowledge is essential for professionals and practical studies. Because nursing is a human science and practical science, theory and knowledge development is an indispensable task to improve nursing. Nursing is a very special paradigm not exactly correlated to Western medicine and Oriental medicine. However, nursing was influenced by on Western medicine at the beginning, and most nursing theories were established western philosophies. Caring is the essence of nursing. To provide qualitative care which satisfies clients, it is required to respect cultures of the clients. Western and Eastern approaches of thinking are coexisting in Korea no, so the needs for developing a nursing model, East-West Nursing, which blends two approaches are increasing. In this paper, concepts of the East-West Nursing, differences between Oriental and Western medicines, and comparison of nursing metaparadigm in prospects from and Western Philosophies were briefly covered to define the East-West Nursing. Strategies and directions to develop the East-West Nursing were also discussed.

  • To investigate daily variations of water mass distribution in the west and the east parts of Jeju Island, we implemented observations from June 20 to 22, 1997. (The results are as follows : Temperatures in the east and the west were similar in the surface, but $15.02^{\circ}C$ and $13.8^{\circ}C$ in the bottom, respectively.) In the east and west, the surface and the deep salinities are 33.81, 33.34 and 34.33, 34.11 respectively. The east shows higher temperature and salinity than the west. The distributions of nitrate in the east and the west were very similar in the surface regions.(In the deep regions, however, the east shows higher than the west.) The east shows higher phosphates than the west both in surface and deep regions. The silicate had similar distributions to nitrate. Chlorophyll-a of the west was twice higher than that of the east. The daily variations of temperature and salinity were largest at 30m depth, and pH was not much changed in the depth and the pH in day was higher than that at night. The variations of nutrients were much changed in the depth, and nitrate and phosphate at night were higher than those in day. Daily variations of silicate, however, was not much changed in the observation times. Ratio of N/P in the east and the west were 13 and 16, respectively, so that the west was higher than the east. However the ratios were two times higher both in the east and the west in day, when planktons are more active than at night. Si/P ratio showed little different between day and night and between surface and deep regions. The correlation of nitrogen and phosphorus was high (plus relation), and the correlation of AOU, nitrogen and phosphorus was high(plus relation) in the east, however, not high in the west.

  • Background and Aims: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potential prognostic biomarker for patients with resected gastric cancer. However, its role remains controversial. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. Methods: Relevant literature was identified using Medline and survival data from published studies were collected following a methodological assessment. Quality assessment of eligible studies and meta-analysis of hazard ratio (HR) were performed to review the correlation of VEGF overexpression with survival and recurrence in patients with gastric cancer. Results: Our meta-analysis included 44 published studies with 4,794 resected patients. VEGF subtype for the prediction of overall survival (OS) included tissue VEGF (HR=2.13, 95% CI 1.71-2.65), circulating VEGF (HR=4.22, 95% CI 2.47-7.18), tissue VEGF-C (HR=2.21, 95% CI 1.58-3.09), tissue VEGF-D (HR=1.73, 95% CI 1.25-2.40). Subgroup analysis showed that HRs of tissue VEGF for OS were, 1.78 (95% CI 0.90-3.51) and 2.31 (95% CI 1.82-2.93) in non-Asians and Asians, respectively. The meta-analysis was also conducted for disease free survival (DFS) and disease specific survival (DSS). Conclusion: Positive expression of tissue VEGF, circulating VEGF, VEGF-C and VEGF-D were all associated with poor prognosis in resected gastric cancer. However, VEGF demonstrated no significant prognostic value for non-Asian populations. Circulating VEGF may be better than tissue VEGF in predicting prognosis.

  • In Korean waters, there are two color types (blue and purple) of the blue crab Portunus trituberculatus. The blue type is common, but the ratio of the purple type has increased in landings. To determine whether there were significant morphometric or genetic differences between the blue and purple types, crabs caught from the West Sea of Korea were examined. Based on covariance analysis, there were significant differences in 1 of 10 morphometric characteristics of males between the two types, in none of the ten characteristics for females. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting, no specific AFLP marker was detected for each type. The heterozygosity and genetic diversity were very low. Analyses of pairwise distance, the Fst index, and genetic similarity revealed similar results, with very low genetic differentiation. Therefore, there is no significant difference between blue and purple types of the crab from the West Sea of Korea, and the two types in the West Sea can be managed as one stock.

  • Purpose : In order to study the effectiveness of East-West pain treatment on central poststroke pain(CPSP), we evaluated its effect on alleviation of pain and rehabilitation of CPSP patients who were treated with eletroacupuncture and west pain treatment for four weeks. Methods : Twenty four patients diagnosed by their pain characteristics of central pain form stroke were treated with sympathetic nerve block, gabapentin, amitriptyline, and electroacupuncture for four weeks. Pain intensity through the visual analogue scale(VAS), and improvements of mobility and rehabilitation through the modified Barthel index(MBI) and Rankin scale(RS), respectively, before and after pain treatment were also assessed. Results : VAS pain scores were significantly improved from $7.7{\pm}1.7$ to $4.4{\pm}2.0$ with pain treatment(p<0.05). In accordance with improvement of ain scores, RS and MBI scores ere also improved from $2.88{\pm}0.95$ to $2.13{\pm}1.01$ and from $83.0{\pm}16.9$ to $94.7{\pm}9.5$(p<0.05), respectively, with pain treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : It was suggested that the active pain treatment was contributed to the rehabilitation of CPSP patients, resulting in improvement of quality of life of CPSP patients. Futhermore, East pain treatment in combination with West pain treatment may be useful modality to alleviate CPSP.
