The effect of metal turnover (MTO) of electroless Ni plating bath on the brittle fracture behavior of electroless nickel electroless palladium immersion gold (ENEPIG)/Sn-3.0wt%Ag-0.5wt%Cu(SAC305) solder joint was evaluated in this study. The MTOs of the electroless Ni for the ENEPIG surface finish were 0 and 3. As the MTO increased, the interfacial IMC thickness increased. The brittle fracture behavior of the ENEPIG/SAC305 solder joint was evaluated with high speed shear (HSS) test. The HSS strength decreased with increasing the MTO of the electroless Ni bath. The brittle fracture increased with increasing the shear speed of the HSS test. The percentage of the brittle fracture for the 3 MTO sample was much higher than that for the 0 MTO sample.
Laser cladding processing allows rapid transfer of heat to the material being processed with minimum conduction into base metal, resulting in low total heat input. The effects of $CO_2$ laser cladding with powder feeding on mechanical properties of VERSAlloy were studied. Their low melting point (under 1093$^{\circ}C$) enables overlays to be applied with minimum dilution and base metal distortion. Experiment results indicated that powder feeding speed and quantity were important for laser cladding with powder feeding. The powder feeding speed should be adapted according to cladding speed for good shaping of clad layer. The effect of heat on the HAZ size can be limited and the growth of grain size of HAZ size was not serious.
6061 aluminum alloy sheets were I-square butt welded using a continuous wave Nd:YAC laser. Heat inputs were varied from 54.6 to 80 J/mm for butt welding using different sets of the laser power and the weld speed. I-square butt welds were also made with and without Ar shielding gas. The effect of Ar shielding gas and heat input on the mechanical properties and formability was investigated using Vickers hardness, transverse-weld tensile and bulge test. Porosity on the weld beads and sections and hot crack on the fracture surfaces of transverse-weld tensile test specimens were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy The experimental results showed that mechanical properties and formability of 6061 aluminum alloy laser welds were degraded compared to those of base metal. Mechanical properties and formability of 6061 aluminum alloy laser welds were not substantially changed when Ar shielding gas was supplied or heat inputs were varied.
This paper is a study on the effect of the cutting speed, length of tip-specimen and cutting thickness in CNC gas cutting of the high-tensile steel plate(AH36). Experiments were performed to investigate the variations of cutting surface, surface roughness and kerf width under various cutting conditions.
This study was performed to clarification of the formation of weld discontinuities in the dissimilar laser fusion zone. Welding parameters were beam power of 1300, 1430, 1560, and 1700 W and travel speed of 1, 1.3, and 1.7 m/min. Most cavities in the fusion zone were observed near the tip. Cavities in the fusion zone observed to be formed and grown from pores in the tip. More cavities were formed as the beam position moves to the tip side. Small cavities were decreased but large cavities were increased when the energy input increased. W content in the fusion zone was increased with heat input and as the beam position close to the tip. In the fusion zone, W content in the dendrite boundary was increased with heat input. Considering the propagation path and fracture morphology, cracks were solidification cracking, and were initiated and propagated along the dendrite boundaries. The formation of cracks might be related with the W rich ${\mu}$ phase which was formed in the grain boundaries and dendrite boundaries.

This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deeply penetrated weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in STS 310S with above 0.017%P and undercuts were formed in STS 303 with about 0.3%S. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in STS 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of STS 310S through a high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. Several laser pulse shapes were investigated and optimum pulse shapes were proposed for the reduction and prevention of porosity and solidification cracking.
Ti-alloys have high specific strength and are widely used for the filed of space aeronautics plant. However, it is difficult to process Ti-Alloys due to its high yield strength and it cannot raise the machining speed because it has a possibility of catching fire while processing. In order to reduce the number of processes for the Ti-alloys, the researches related to Additive Manufacturing(AM) have been actively carried out at the moment. As for the initial stage of AM market related to Ti-alloys, it started to use the raw material of powder metal, and it is currently being developed based on welding. In this study, Interpass peening reduced the size of the primary ${\beta}$ grain in the z-axis direction, increased the nucleation site of ${\alpha}-colony$, and decreased the length and width of ${\alpha}$ laths as though interpass rolling. Interpass peening leads to an increase in yield/ultimate tensile strength without decrease elongation, resulting decrease in anisotropy of the material.
The effect of shield gas on the weldability, mechanical properties and formability of CO2 laser weld joint in 600MPa grade high strength steel was investigated. Bead on plate welds were made under various welding speed and shield gas. Tensile test was carried out under the load of perpendicular and parallel direction to the weld line, Formability of the joint was evaluated by Erichsen test. As the welding speed increases, the porosity fraction decreases. The porosity fraction in the joint used Ar-$50\%He$ mixed gas as a shield gas was lower than that of the joint used Ar gas. Hardness at the weld metal of full penetrated joint was nearly equal to that of water quenched raw metal. In a tensile test under a perpendicular load to the weld axis, strength and elongation of joint produced by optimum condition were nearly equal to those of base metal. However, the strength of joint in a tensile test under a parallel load to weld axis was higher than that of raw metal, but the elongation of joint was lower than that of raw metal. Elongation and formability were further increased by the method of using Ar+He mixed gas as a shield gas as compared with Ar gas. Formabilities of joints were recorded ranging from $58\%\;to\;70\%$ of that of base metal with different shield gases.
Hot tensile tests were conducted at different temperatures ranging from $20^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the mechanical properties of Al5052 seamless tubes. Such tubes can provide the technological foundation for complex forming using hot air bulging. Hot air bulging is one of the recently developed hydroforming techniques and it has some limitations in terms of cycle times. The benefits of hot air bulging are weight and cost savings through part consolidation and reduced post-forming processes such as welding and piercing. In order to extend the forming limits of Al lightweight material hot air bulging was investigated. A heated tube was placed in a heated die and sealed at the ends by sealing cylinders. The heated tube was subsequently expanded against the die cavity wall by internal pressure using air medium. The results of the current study show that axial feeding speed and air pressure have an effect on the formability of Al tubes during air bulging at elevated temperatures.
