  • The modern welding technology hue more then 100 years history, and during that period, the welding has been playing an important role in the development of the manufacturing processes/systems as a key technology. In the time we enter the 21st century, it is question how to develop the innovative and attractive welding technology, in particular by the younger generation. The present report discussed the future trend of welding engineering mainly in Japan after reviewing the previous growth of welding engineering.

Recent Study of Overlay Welding on Welding methods (용접방법에 따른 오버레이 용접기술의 연구동향)

  • Recent developing tendency of overlay welding on welding methods are studied by searching of NDSL, ScienceDirect and KIPRIS. PTA, Laser cladding, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW and ESW are selected as welding methods. Development and improvement of various new overlay welding processes and technology are introduced, especially PTA and Laser cladding in abroad overlay welding technology are activated substantially.

  • Magnesium alloy is being used for structural material since it has high specific strength. Tubular shape was effective way for enhanced structural design. To manufacture the tube, it is necessary to weld the butted joint of both tubular formed sides. But the magnesium alloy was hardly welded with conventional welding processes. The laser welding was effective way to joint magnesium alloys because it had high weld strength and productivity compare with other welding processes. In this study, magnesium alloy sheets was formed at elevated temperature to tubular shape and welded with laser. Consequently, the magnesium alloy tube was making successful with warm forming and laser welding and bicycle frame was making with it.

A Study on Temperature Profile and Residual Stress in Pipeline Repair Welding Using Sleeve (슬리브덮개를 이용한 배관 보수용접시 온도분포와 잔류응력에 관한 연구)

  • Korea Gas Corporation has operated high pressure gas transmission line of about 600 kilometers and, therefore, a series of repair welding processes are required in order to cope with external defects such as dent, gouge, cracking usually due to mechanical attacks. Most of gas pipelines repair processes are performed after completely venting remaining gas. However, in some case, though it is very unusual, repairs require without venting gas. For instance, this case is that damaged pipeline is remedied with split sleeve by welding. In this paper, in an effort to confirm a safe application of the split sleeve welding, residual stress, strain and temperature distributions are evaluated by computer simulation and experiments. The results obtained are as follows : 1) Computer modelling is supposed to be reasonable because microstructure changes due to welding is simulated coincidently as compare to that of real condition. 2) The maximal temperature on inside surface of pipeline is 50$0^{\circ}C$ for the repair welding process. 3) The amount of residual stress is estimated as the stress corresponding to 0.8% strain. 4) The repair process employed is determined to be technically preferable because of its avoiding cracks and fractures in the course of welding.

  • With an expansion in automation of welding processes, emphasis has been shifted from other welding processes to the GMA welding. However, there is a problem with this process that the spatter occurs very frequently. In GMA welding, there are several types in the way of metal transfer from the electrode wire to the weld pool, which have a close relatonship with the spatter genetration. This study was concerned with the spatter occurring in the short-circuiting transfer. In welding with short-circuiting, the electromagnetic force formed by the welding current facilitatics the rupture of the metal bridge between the wire and workpiece and ensures the normal process of the welding process. However, the spatter can be genetrated from the droplet because of the upward magnetic force, when the droplet contacts with the weld pool. The passage of current through the bridge results in the accumulation of the thermal energy, which causes the bridge to explode in the final stage of short-circuiting, thus forming the spatter. Based on the above phenomena in conjunction with other experimental results published, the physical phenomenon related with the occurrence of spatter was modeled and the current waveform was investigated to reduce the spatter. Finally, the fuzzy rule based method was proposed to predict the time of short-circuiting and arcing in the metal transfer.

  • This paper describes the design of a neural network estimator to estimate weld pool sizes for on-line use of quality monitoring and control in GMA welding processes. The estimator utilizes surface temperatures measured at various points on the top surface of the weldment as its input. The main task of the neural net is to realize the mapping characteristics from the point temperatures to the weld pool sizes through training, A series of bead-on plate welding experiments were performed to assess the performance of the neural estimator.

  • This paper describes a method to measure a weldment surface temperature for estimating variations of the weld pool size in the gas metal arc(GMA) welding processes. An Infrared sensing system is designed to measure the radiation emitted from the top surface of the weldment, The interference effect of the electric arc to the measurement is rejected by detecting the low peaks of the noisy signal. An optimizing criterion, in which the correlation between the weld quality and the measured temperature is maximized, is also proposed to determine the optimal measurement location.

Mechanical properties of fine grained steel weldments formed with low heat input (세립강 저입열 용접부의 기계적 성질)

  • Low heat input welding methods have been investigated in order to minimize the HAZ softening of the 600MPa grade fine grained steel weldment. The welding processes of interest were a high speed FCA welding with a multi-torch welding system, laser welding with filler feeding and hybrid laser welding. No HAZ softening was found for all the weldments formed with low heat input less than 10kJ/cm. Tensile strength of the weldments was high enough to satisfy the required value. Impact toughness of the weldments was also good even at -20$^{\circ}C$.

  • Welding is one of the most important joining processes and the effect of welding residual stresses in the structure has a great deal of influence on its quality. In this paper, recent development in computational welding mechanics, particularly calculation of welding residual stresses, is introduced. The hypoelastic formulation of finite element analysis for thermoelastic-plastic deformation is applied to welding processes to find residual deformations and stresses. Leblond's phase evolution equation coupled with the energy equation is employed to calculate the phase volume fraction; this plays an important role as a kinetics parameter affecting phase fraction effects in the mechanical constitutive equation of welded materials. Furthermore, transformation plasticity is taken into account for an accurate evaluation of stress. The influence of the phase transformation and the transformation plasticity on residual stress is investigated by means of numerical analyses using metallurgical parameters in Leblond's phase evolution equation that are adjusted with respect to various cooling rates in a CCT-diagram. Coding implementation is conducted by way of the ABAQUS user subroutines, UMAT.
