  • Recently, there has been considerable research in the field of application of Laser-Arc hybrid welding for superstructures, such as ship-structures, transport vehicles etc. However, the study on heat distribution and welding residual stress of hybrid weld by numerical simulation leaves much to be desired. Therefore, in this study, an optimized welding condition and numerical simulation for hybrid welding, using previous numerical analysis to calculate the heat source for hybrid welding, has been analyzed. For this purpose, fundamental welding phenomena of the hybrid process, using Laser and, is investigated. In order to calculate temperature and residual stress distribution in hybrid welds, a finite element heat source model is developed on the basis of experimental results and characteristics of temperature. Residual stress distribution in hybrid welds are understood from the result of simulation, and compared with the experimental values.

  • This paper describes the weldability and mechanical behavior of JIS S45C medium carbon steel (corresponding to KS SM45C and SAE 1045) for machine structures in CW Nd:YAG laser welding. In general, medium carbon steels have a limited application to the industrial fields in spite of good mechanical characteristics. This is due to welding difficulty because of the high carbon contents and impurities in this material. Therefore, in this study the laser weldability of medium carbon steel with adjusted contents of S and P has been investigated in order to extend the application to medium carbon steels. Several experiments and numerical simulations have been conducted to determine the characteristics of mechanical behavior in CW Nd:YAC laser welds. The results of the simulations concur with the experiment results. From the result of this study, the application possibility of CW Nd:YAG laser welding to medium carbon steel has been confirmed. Also, the appropriateness of mechanical behavior simulation has been verified to analyze and predict the welding phenomena.

  • In this study the heat transfer and fluid flow of the molten pool in stationary gas tungsten arc welding using argon shielding gas were investigated. Transporting phenomena from the welding arc to the base material surface, such as current density, heat flux, arc pressure and shear stress acting on the weld pool surface, were taken from the simulation results of the corresponding welding arc. Various driving forces for the weld pool convection were considered, self-induced electromagnetic, surface tension, buoyancy, and impinging plasma arc forces. Furthermore, the effect of surface depression due to the arc pressure acting on the molten pool surface was considered. Because fusion boundary has a curved and unknown shape during welding, a boundary-fitted coordinate system was adopted to precisely describe the boundary for the momentum equation. The numerical model was applied to AISI 304 stainless steel and compared with the experimental results.

  • In order to analyze the mechanical phenomena of three dimensional elato-plastic behavior caused by welding of thick plate, it is necessary to solve exactly the three dimensional unstationary heat conduction problem considering the moving effect of heat source and the temperature-dependence of material properties. In this paper, the three-dimensional unstationary heat conduction problem is formulated by using an isoparametric finite element method. Thereafter, the transient temperature distributions, according to time, of thick plate during welding are defined from the results calculated by the developed computer program.

  • The bonding phenomena of Ni base single crystal superalloy. CMSX-4 during transient liquid phase(TLP) bonding was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. Bonding of CMSX-4 was carried out at 1,373∼1,548K for 0∼19.6ks in vacuum. The (001) orientation of each test specimen was aligned perpendicular to the bonding interface. The dissolution width of base metal was increased when the bonding temperature and holding time were increased. The eutectic width diminished linearly with the square root of holding time during isothermal solidification process. Borides were formed in the bonded layer during TLP bonding operation. The solid phase grew epitaxially into the liquid phase from substrates and single crystallization could be readily achieved during the isothermal solidification.

  • To clarify the debonding phenomena of clad steel, the effect of thermal treatment (temperature, holding time) on the interfacial strength of clad steel was preliminarily investigated. From this study, it was confirmed that the interfacial strength of clad steel was deteriorated by thermal treatment and the amount of strength deteriorated, depending on the condition of thermal treatment, could be evaluated by the following equation. ${\sigma}_{ HT}/{\sigma}_{i}/=A_{0}-A\;exp(-Q/RT)log(t/t_{0})$ This equation implies that temperature has a far strong effect on strength deterioration than tiem. The deterioration of interfacial strength of clad steel after thermal treatment may be derived from the thermal stress caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between component materials and microstructural change along the interface.

  • The debonding of clad steel was often occurred at interface between stainless steel and carbon steel during the fabrication of pressure vessel. In order to clarify the causes of debonding phenomena, the fabrication sequences were fully analyzed. As a result, possible factors were noticed for causing the debonding of clad steel, that is, thermal treatment on weldment and welding. Moreover the existence of hydrogen diffused from surroundings also expedites the debonding of clad steel. In this stud, the effect of welding thermal cycle, hydrogen and mixed condition under thermal treatment on the interfacial strength of clad steel were investigated to understand the debonding mechanism of clad steel. From this study, it has been confirmed that the interfacial strength of clad steel was remarkablely deteriorated due to welding and/or existence of hydrogen under thermal treatment. In the case of welding thermal cycle effect, the higher temperature at interface experienced by welding, the more reduction in interfacial strength of clad steel resulted in. And the existence of diffusible hydrogen also reduced the interfacial strength. It is also found that the interfacial strength of clad steel became much lower value than that of the as-received plate under coexistence of above mentioned factors.
