Today, implementation of the defect detection in laser welding has been researched for a long time, but most studies have been made around thin plate within $1{\sim}3mm^t$. Therefore, this study was measured and analyzed light emission signals of the induced plasma in $CO_2$ laser lap welding of $6mm^t$ Zn primer-coated steel, and based on this analysis, research made an investigation into possibility of monitoring in thick plate welding. It was been analyzing the measured signals by RMS and FFT processing, as a results, we were able to confirm definite difference of two signals between humping bead and sound bead. Thus, possibility of real time monitoring in $CO_2$ laser lap welding verified experimentally.
Fluctuation of light intensity from the keyhole becomes more significant in full penetration welding than partial penetration welding, since the plasma produced in the keyhole can escape from the rear side of the keyhole. The plasma optical radiation emitted during Nd:YAG laser welding of S45C steel samples has been detected with a Photodiode and analyzed under different process conditions. As the results, the BOP was performed for welding, behavior of plasma, spatter or plume was monitored to determine the reference signal. Then, random combination was made for comparison with the reference signal, which aimed at verifying reliability of the welding monitoring system that this study intended to develop.
During laser welding, a laser induced matal vapour and plasuma is formed. The plasma shows strong fluctuation combined with acoustic sound emission. On-line monitoring of the process is possible by measuring and analysing the plasma and acoustic sound emission. This paper introduce the method of on line process monitoring in the laser beam welding and analysis being monitoring signal. The results show the complementary information on the process.
Fiber laser is a heat source which is introduced recently, and so has a little researched data compare with conventional laser processing. Moreover basic data for welding monitoring are also insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the change of signal with measuring position and angle of plasma emission signals were analysed as a basic experiment for real time monitoring in fiber laser welding. As a result, the signals measured from the side, front and rear had the biggest intensity at $60^{\circ}$, and frequency peak to reflect the behavior of keyhole and swing of plasma by shield gas was detected at $45{\sim}60^{\circ}$. However, both intensity of signal and the result of FFT for monitoring were satisfied at the angle of $45^{\circ}$ from the side.

Time series analysis results show the SVD is a candidate of on-line monitoring of welding penetration when the covariance matrix of a full penetration is used as a mapping function. As the reconstructed embedding vectors from the chaotic scalar time series are manipulated by the covariance matrix, the mapped tim series lie on a hyper-ellipsoid which the lengths of semi-axes are the squared eigenvalues of the covariance matrix in the case of full penetration. These visualize by two dimensional stroboscope views. The other cases like partial penetration, are different in the sense of sizes and shapes. Here we test two types of time series; the ion current and the X-ray. The ion current is better than the X-ray as an on-line monitoring signal, because the difference of the eigenvalue spectrum of the ion(between the pull penetration and partial penetration) is bigger than those of the X-ray.
On the laser weld production line, a slight alteration of the welding condition produces many defects. The defects are monitored in real time, in order to prevent continuous occurrence of defects, reduce the loss of material, and guarantee good quality. The measurement system is produced by using three photo-diodes for detection of the plasma and spatter signal in CO$_2$ laser welding. For high speed CO$_2$ laser welding, laser tailored welded blanks for example, on-line weld quality monitoring system was developed by using fuzzy multi-feature pattern recognition. Weld qualities were classified optimal heat input, a little low heat input, low heat input, and focus misalignment, and final weld quality were classified good and bad.
Real time monitoring has become critical as the use of laser welding increases. Plasma and spatter are measured and used as the signal for estimating weld quality. The estimating algorithm was made using the fuzzy pattern recognition with the area of data that is beyond the tolerance boundary. Also, an algorithm that detects the spatter and the localized defect was created in order to kd the partially produced pit and the sudden loss of weld penetration. These algorithms were used in quality monitoring of the $CO_2$ laser tailored blank weld. Statistical program that can display the laser weld quality result and the signal transition was made for the first stage of the remote control system.
Both in-process quality control and reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns is applying friction welding. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So that, this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the effects of initial acoustic emission(AE) counts on the weld strength relating to the rotating speed as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE counts occurring during plastic deformation period of welding were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds, tube-to-tube (SM 20 C to STS 304) and then an AE technique using the initial AE counts can be reliably applied to in-process strength monitoring of the weld.
The current waveform was analysed to monitor the weld quality in real time process. The acquired current waveform was discretely analysed for the top and bottom limits of peaks as well as the pulse frequency measurement. Fast Fourier Transform was implemented in the program to monitor the pulse frequency in real time. The developed algorithm or program was tested for the validation purpose. The cross-section of weld profile was compared to the current waveform profile to correlate the monitored signal and the actual parts. Pulse frequency was also used as auxiliary tool for the quality monitoring. Based on the results, it was possible to evaluate the quality of welding by measure the current waveform profile and frequency measurement.
