This paper was described on investigation to prevent porosity in high speed MIG Welding of Al 6082-T6. Porosity measurement was carried out by using image analysis of micrographs with the help of an analysis software. The main parameter was arc length and torch progressive angle. The porosity ratio was increased as arc length was increased. The arc length was increased depending upon the output voltage. By proper selection of pulse waveform parameter, the stable arc of one pulse one drop was generated. The porosity ratio of optimum condition in one pulse one drop was lower than high voltage condition. When torch progressive angle was an angle of advance $10^{\circ}$, porosity ratio was minium.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of welding parameters such as shielding gas compositions welding voltage and welding current on the pore formation in the weld beads of galvanized steel pipes produced with gas metal arc welding. The porosity was evaluated and rated by metallography and radiographic test in terms of weight percentage, number and distribution of pores in weld beads. The porosity increased with increasing welding voltage and current, in which Ar gas produced the most porosity while $Ar+5%O_2$ generated the least porosity. It was found that the porosity could be reduced by selection of the proper gas mixture composition such as $Ar+5%O_2$ and $Ar+10%CO_2$ and by using current (130~150A) and voltage(16~20V).

Generally, porosity which was formed by pyrolysis of the primer is usually generated in the weld metal in respect of increase of the welding speed. in order to analyze the cause of porosity generation, this study was performed using FCAW(flux cored arc welding) process for three kinds of inorganic.zinc primer. in addition the evaluation by influence of welding method on porosity generation is conducted to compare between FCAW and MAG(metal active gas) welding with the same inorganic zinc primer. As the result of this investigation, not only primer of lower organic binder and zinc but also FCAW process than MAG in fillet welding have been verified the excellent resistance to the porosity generation for horizontal fillet welding.
The lap Joint welding of 6K21 aluminum sheets by Nd:YAG laser were performed with an aluminum 5183 filler wire or without a filler wire. The porosity of laser welding beads were observed through an optical microscope and X-ray photography with various levels of welding speed and gap size. The porosity was observed in the gap between upper and lower sheet near a heat affected zone when autogenous welding. Decrease of welding speed and use of AA5183 filler wire reduced porosity significantly.

The effect of pre-heating on the mechanical properties of laser welding joints has been investigated for the case of SM45C carbon steel welded by a cw Nd:Y AG laser. The occurrence of porosity and cracking was inspected in various welding conditions to find the optimal welding parameters. The results of laser welding experiment with pre-heating technique showed that porosity and cracking can be reduced significantly in most of welding conditions and the welded joints have improved mechanical properties, such as higher tensile strength and better durability.
Laser welding of ASTM no. 1060 Al plate with a pulsed Nd: YAG laser of 200W average power was performed for end capping of KMRR nuclear fuel elements In this research, we performed basic welding experiments. Firstly, laser output parameters which affect laser welding parameters were studied by changing laser input parameters for effective welding of 1060 Al plates. We found that laser power density and pulse energy are important parameters for smooth bead shape. Secondly, welding parameters which affect weld width-to-depth ratio were studied by changing power density and pulse energy, shielding gas, and defocusing. We found that power density must be higher than 0.3 Mw/cm$^{2}$ pulse energy must be higer than 3 J. travel speed must not exceed 200mm/sec, laser focus must be existed beneath 2-3mm from plate surface and helium is proper shielding gas. Thirdly, we studied the weld defects of Al-1060 such as crack and porosity in lap-joint welding. We designed new welding geometry for crack free welding of Al-1060 plates, and obtained crack free weldment but with lack of fusion. However, with Ti, Zr grain refiner elements, we can weld Al plates without solidification hot crack. Finally, we studied the origin of porosity by changing shielding gas. And we found that porosity was resulted from entrapment of shielding gas by the collapsing keyhole.
The use of Zn coated steel has increased in the automotive industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance. Conventionally the BIW(body-in-white) structure and the hang-on parts have been made of Zn coated steel and more recently Zn coated steel began to be applied in the chassis parts. During gas metal arc (GMA) welding of the chassis part, lap fillet joint used to be adopted but spatter generation and porosities are most important concerns. In the industrial applications, an intentional joint gap was made to avoid the weld defects but it is not easy to control the size of joint gap. In this research, gas tungsten arc (GTA) is combined with GMA welding where GTA precedes GMA. As pulsed arc was adopted as GMA, GTA was oscillated along the longitudinal direction by pulsing GMA, but the arc oscillation did not disturb the molten droplet transfer of GMA welding. By increasing the distance between GTA and GMA, the length of weld pool increased and porosity could be reduced. Moreover porosity in the welds was fully removed when the distance between two arcs was 15 mm.
It has been reported that good quality weld beads are not easily obtained during the $CO_2$ CW laser welding of primer coated plate. However, by introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position, the zinc vapor can escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. Therefore, this study examines for keyhole behavior by observing the laser-induced plasma and investigates the relation between keyhole behavior and formation of weld defect. Laser-induced plasma has accompanied with the vaporizing pressure of zinc ejecting from keyhole to surface of primer coated plate. This dynamic behavior of plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser welding. As a result of observing the composition of porosity, much of Zn element was found from inner surface of porosity. But Zn was not found from the dimple structure fractured at the weld metal. By analyzing of vaporizing element in laser welding, a component ratio of Zn was decreased by introducing a small gap clearance. Therefore we can prove that the major cause of porosity is the vaporization of primer in lap position. Mechanism of porosity-formation is that the primer vaporized from the lap position accelerates dynamic behavior of the key hole and the bubble separated from the key hole is trapped in the solidification boundary and romaines as porosity.

This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG Laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deep penetration weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in Type 303 with about 0.3%s. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in Type 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of Type 310S. through high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. Several laser pulse shapes were investigated and optimum pulse shapes were proposed for the reduction and prevention of porosity and solidification cracking.
