  • This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.

  • The restraint force is required for the accurate measurement and analysis to protect weldment from residual stress. Also, this residual stress caused by cracks in weldments is often observed in the weldments of large size nozzles or radial tanks after welding. This paper is preformed to evaluate the welding restraint forces using load cell with STS304 thin plate which is used as the pressure vessel steel in the industry field. As a result, as the welding currents are higher and the welding speeds are more slowly, the magnitude of restraint force in process of the flat plate welding shows to be more large.

  • The stress intensity factor has been calculated theoretically for the cracked plate subjected to remote normal stress and reinforced with a sheet by symmetric seam welding. The singular integral equation was derived based on displacement compatibility condition between the cracked sheet and the reinforcement plate, and solved by means of Erdogran and Gupta's method. The results from the derived equation for stress intensity factor were compared with FEM solutions and seems to be reasonable. The reinforcement effect gets better as welding line is closer to the crack and the stiffness ratio of the cracked plate and the reinforcement sheet becomes larger.

  • Welding distortions of large steel structures had mainly been estimated with some simplified formula obtained by lots of experience and numerical analyses for small steel structures. However, the large structures would have different characteristics of distortion with welding because of their own stiffness coming from the size itself. Therefore, in order to find some measures for preventing welding distortion of large structure, it is requite in advance to precisely analysis thermal stress and distortion during welding of the structure. Numerical analysis for larger structure has been known to take large amount of calculation time and have a poor convergency problem during the thermo-elasto-plastic calculation. In this study, a hybrid method is proposed to analysis the thermal stress and distortion of a large steel plate with the finite element analysis by incorporating with temperature distribution of the plate calculated by an analytical solution. The proposed method revealed that the thermo-mechanical analysis for welding of the large structure could be performed with a good convergence and produced precise results with much reduced time consumption.

  • The study is to investigate the influence on the fatigue crack growth behaviors for the welded configuration in pressure vessel stiffener. In order to perform this goal, the automatic welded specimens were prepared. The material is ASTM A516 grade 60 steel used in pressure vessel mainly. In skip welding of pad-on-plate, continuous fillet welding and PWHT specimen, fatigue crack is generally initiated at the starting and end old toe zone, and ruptured at the starting old toe zone. The fatigue life of pad-on-plate of the continuous fillet welding specimen is larger than that of pad-on-plate skip fillet welding specimen about 85% under low load, about 20% under high load and less than that of two-pad continuous fillet welding specimen about 85%. In da/dN-$\Delta$K curve under low load, skip fillet welding specimen of pad-on-plate showed retardation on the initial crack, and the fatigue crack growth rate at the low region of $\Delta$K greater specimen E($3.8 {\times} 10^{-6}mm/cycle$). And the fatigue life of welding specimen was smaller than that of PWHT specimen.

  • Welding often results in welding distortion during the assembly process. The welding distortion of thin-plate structures such as the living quarters of ships and offshore installations is a more significant problem than in the case of thick-plate structures. Pre-stressing/heating and fairing, which are additional works to mitigate and control welding distortion, are inevitable, and the construction planning is accordingly delayed. In order to prevent welding distortion and minimize the additional work during the assembly process, increasing the plate thickness and/or the number of stiffeners may be a simple solution, but it may give rise to problems related to cost and weight. In this study, the welding distortion control effect of the type of stiffeners on the door openings of various living quarter structures was investigated using an experimental method and a finite element method. The results showed the feasibility of mitigating and controlling the welding distortion, and the optimum selection of the type of stiffeners was confirmed.

  • In this paper, a double spot welding process, utilizing electric resistance heating dies, is suggested for the spot welding of dissimilar metal plates for drawing and concurrent spot welding. This double welding process has two heating methods for the fusion welding at the interfacial zone between steel and aluminum plates, such as heating method by thermal conduction of electric resistance by welding current induced to heating dies, and heating method by electric resistance between contacted surfaces of two plates by welding current induced to copper electrode. This double welding process has welding variables such as each current induced in heating dies and in copper electrode, outer diameters of heating dies, and edge shape of copper electrode. Experiments for current conditions in welding process should be demanded in order to get successful welding strength. It was known that the welding strength could be reached to the value demanded on industry fields under such welding conditions as heating dies of outer ring dia.12mm contacted on steel plate, as heating dies of outer ring dia. 14mm contacted on aluminum plate, and as copper electrode of dia. 6.0mm, and as 3 times continuous heating method by $1^{st}$ current of 11 kA(9cycle), $2^{nd}$ current 11 kA(60cycle), $3^{rd}$ current 7 kA(60cycle) applied in steel heating dies and copper electrodes, flat edge of copper electrode, for double spot welding process of dissimilar metal plates of steel and aluminum of 1.0 mm thickness.

  • Many processes have been introduced to join PE pipes, but most of these methods have lots of disadvantages such as costs and lack of reliability, etc. Recently due to the benefits of cost, safety and reliability, the but welding has been paid much attention to join PE pipes. In case of butt welding, the heat plate which is used to melt PE pipes is the most critical equipment. In this study, after designed secondary developed heat plate of new shape, the PE double wall pipes were but-welding by using the developed heat plate and secondary developed heat plate and comparison of weld-zones and tensile test were performed. As results of tensile test, tensile strengths using secondary developed heat plate were measured higher $1.17{\sim}1.5$ than using developed heat plate.

  • Nd:YAG pulse laser fillet welding of stainless steel plate was simulated to find welding condition by using commercial finite element code MARC. Full model of AISI 304 stainless steel plate was considered and user subroutines were applied to boundary condition for the heat transfer. Material properties such as conductivity, specific heat, mass density and latent heat were given as a function of temperature. As results, Three dimensional heat source model for pulse laser beam conditions of fillet welding has been designed by the comparison between the finite element analysis results and experimental data on AISI 304 stainless steel plate. Nd:YAG laser welding for AISI 304 stainless steel was successfully simulated and it should be useful to determine optimal welding condition.

  • In this paper, a study on the residual stress of plate with longitudinal stiffeners is explained in terms of the welding sequences. In order to verify the results of numerical analysis, the hole drilling method (HDM) is performed, to measuring the residual stresses of the test plates in $CO_2$ Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) under various welding conditions. The non-linear transient analysis technique for the numerical analysis in a large and complicate structure is considered. The residual stress of plate in consideration of the welding sequences and directions is evaluated by some numerical simulations and also by experiments. Comparison of numerical analysis results with experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of the proposed method.
