The membrane of the LNG carriers consists of thin strips of INVAR(Fe-36%Ni) steel plates, and the junction between INVAR strips is fabricated by welding. Thousands of the raised edge joints, regularly spaced, are located around all the side of the tank corner near the transverse bulkhead, and TIG welding is manually made on the top of the raised edges. Since the thickness of all the laminated edge plies is extremely thin and the weld position is under a bad accessibility, highly skilled workers are required to perform welding relatively for a long welding time. An alternative scheme for the corner membrane fabrication is proposed in the study to improve the installation workability and thus productivity. The scheme replaces the welded edges with the preformed corrugation ones. A panel strip with regularly-spaced corrugations is installed at the corner instead of the individual flat strip of which edge is vertically raised to be welded with the adjacent strip. In the study, a series of the evaluation on the corrugated edge members was performed to assess the applicability to the real LNG carrier fabrication. Opening displacement at the raised edge was experimentally examined. Elastic stiffness regressed from the displacement was nearly same in both edge types. Edge displacement and local stresses were calculated under hydrostatic pressure and temperature change due to liquefied cargo. Fatigue test was performed on both corrugated and welded edge specimens consisting of two or five plies of invar strips. Fatigue strength of the corrugated specimens was not less than that of the welded specimens.
Currently, Induction welding is attracting attention as a non-contact, clean and fast welding process. However, since thermoplastic resins are not affected by electromagnetic fields, induction welding requires a heating element called a susceptor. Researches are being conducted with the aim of achieving high-quality bonding, however, the factor of a heating element is an issue, hence the need to set a standard. Specimen fabrication and testing are conducted according to ASTM D5868. In this study, we propose that the evaluation criteria be judged on the basis of three factors; the condition of the welded joint surface, void content, and lap shear strength. Since the adhesive surface to be welded melts and solidifies as it cools, rapid temperature changes can generate pores. In addition, if the heating is not uniform, it is difficult to expect the desire performance. Using PA6 (CF 30%) thermoplastic, susceptor fabrication, induction welding and performance verification were conducted.
The porthole extrusion process is a classic metal forming process to produce complex cross-section shaped aluminum profile. It is very difficult to design porthole die and extrusion process because of the complex shape of extrusion die and internal metal flow. The main variables in this process are ram speed, initial billet and tool temperature, and die shape. In general, the metal flow of porthole extrusion process can be divided into two steps. During the first step, the billet is divided into several parts in the porthole die bridge. During the second step, the divided billets are welded in the welding chamber. In the welding chamber, the level of welding pressure is very important for the quality of the final product. The purpose of this study is to increase the welding pressure in the welding chamber by using a two stage welding chamber. The porthole extrusion die was designed by using the Taguchi method with orthogonal array. The effectiveness of the optimized porthole die was verified by using the finite element analysis.
The laser welding was performed for the flange joint of two overlapped coaxial circular pipes which serve as the inlet and connector pipes of STS 316L. The laser welding test finally resulted in a good penetration depth of 1.8 to 2.0 mm. On the way to get the good welding quality, two important parameters were found to be optimized. One is the focal positioning which is the offset of the laser beam focus to the exact welding seam line, which is more critical in the inner flange laser welding. When the beam spot size was deviated more than $200\;{\mu}m$ from the seam line, welding of two pipes is failed. The other is a gap size since a certain amount of gap is inevitable due to fabrication tolerance, or artificial allowances for smooth insertion of a pipe. However, it is required to restrict the gap allowance within 0.2mm to avoid undesirable undercut on a welding bead.

There have been continuous efforts for automation of joint tracking system. This automation process is mainly used to do in root pass of gas metal arc welding in the field of heavy industry and shipbuilding etc. For automation, it is important using of vision sensor. Welding robot with vision sensor is used for weld seam tracking on welding fabrication. Recently, it is used to on post-weld inspection for weld quality evaluation. For real time seam tracking, it is very important role in vision process technique. Vision process is included in filtering and thinning, segmentation processing, feature extraction and recognition. In this paper, it has shown performance comparison results of seam tracking for real time root pass on gas metal arc welding. It can be concluded better segment splitting method than iterative averaging technique in the performance results of seam tracking.

Dissimilar-metal welds(DHWs) are used widely in various industrial applications due to the pratical importance from the technical and economic aspect. However, DMWs have several fabricative and metallurgical drawbacks that can often lead to in-service failures. For example, the most pronounced fabrication faults are hot cracks. Recently, DMWs have used the various of heat source to decrease such as faults. In this paper, the weldability on dissimilar metal welds of Austenite stainless steel and Low carbon steel using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser was experimentally investigated. Experiments were conducted to determine effects of welding parameters, on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence parameters such as focus length, power, beam speed, shielding gas, and wave length of laser.
The demand to increase productivity and quality, the shortage of skilled labour and the strict health and safety requirements have led to the development of the automated welding process to deal with many of the present problems of welded fabrication. To make effective use of the automated arc welding process, it is imperative that a mathematical model, which can be programmed easily and fed to the robot, should be developed. The objectives of the paper are to develop the mathematical equations (linear and curvilinear) for study of the relationship between process variables and bead geometry by employing a standard statistical package program, SAS and to choose the best model for automation of the $CO_2$ gas arc welding process. Mathematical models developed from experimental results can be employed to control the process variables in order to achieve the desired bead geometry based on weld quality criteria. Also these equations may prove useful and applicable for automatic control system and expert systems.

For many years and primarily for economical reasons, Dissimilar Metal Welds have been used as transition joints in a variety of equipment and applications. But Dissimilar Metal Welds have several fabrication and metallurgical drawbacks that can often lead to in-service failures. In this paper, the laser weldability of STS304 stainless steel and SM45C at dissimilar metal welds using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser are experimentally investigated. An experimental study was conducted to determine effects of welding parameters, on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence parameters such as focus length, power, beam speed, shielding gas, and wave length of laser were tested.
Temperature distribution of thick plate during welding was investigated. Applied weldng process was shielded metal arc welding which was known as one of the most utilized processes in fabrication fields. Heating and cooling cycles were recorded by imploying high fidelity recorded and K-type thermocouple of 0.3mm in diameter. Both analytical and numerical calculations were preformed so as to verify the thermal cycle measurement. Results showed that the temperature of a welded points at given time could be predicted by the theoretical calculations. It was considered that methods could be applied to real structural components with slight modification.

In irregular curtain walls, the nominal stress required for each member varies greatly depending on the shape, so it is inefficient to design members based on the maximum required stress. Then, built-up members are absolutely necessary, but built-up members manufactured by Manpower-welding cannot be constructed in an irregular curtain wall building because it' not precise. In order to address the problems, this paper presents why Robotic-laser-welding should be used in irregular curtain walls using Gwanggyo Galleria Department Store involving 3D printing as an example. Results verify the performance of Robot-Laser-Welding as an efficient solution for precise steel curtain wall members.
