A Study on the Size of Oust in Workplaces of a Shipyard (조선작업장의 분진크기에 관한 조사)

  • To obtain the basic information that can be used as a factor for explaining the diversity of welders' pneumoconiosis, the authors measured the concentrations of dust according to the size of dust in 71 workplaces of a shipyard where welders' pneumoconiosis have occurred. The concentrations of dust according to the size of dust showed no difference between workplaces regardless of kinds of work.

A Study on Control of Fume for Various Parameters in CO2 Welding (CO2 용접에서 용접변수의 변화에 따른 용접흄 제어방법에 관한 연구)

  • The concentration of welding fume was measured by 221 welders themselves in chassis frame workplace of the manufactory from February, 1, 1996 to May, 31, 1997. Welding parameters were the welding current and the distance between helmet and arc. Those two optimum conditions were proposed by excess probability analysis using logistic regression, so the best position in the workplace was proposed considering two factors to control the welding fume. The results are as followings; 1) The excess proability of welding fume TLV was over 99% in above 260 Amperes of welding current and also in below 30cm of distanced between helmet and arc. 2) The equation from logistic regression analysis using SPSS/PC+5.02 had the welding current as a independent variable and the excess of welding fume TLV as a dependent variable (p<0.05). Logit(welding fume TLV) = 0.1296 ${\times}$ wlding currnet - 28.8750 3) The equation from logistic regression analysis using SPSS/PC+5.02 had the distance between helmet and arc as a independent variable and the excess of welding fume threshold limit value a, a dependent variable (p<0.05). Logit (welding fume TLV) = -0.6809 ${\times}$ distance between helmet and arc +25.1665 4) Considering both cases or 2) and 3). the result equation is following. (p<0.05). Logit (welding fume TLV) = 0.1346 ${\times}$ welding current -0.3859 ${\times}$ distance between helmet and arc -15.7382 5) The excess probability of welding fume threshold limit value was 100% in above 240 Ampere of welding current. Thus, below 220 Ampere can be suggested to reduce the 40% number of welders who have a excess welding fume threshold limit value. 6) The excess probability of welding fume TLV was 100% in below 34cm of distance between helmet and arc. Thus, over 38cm can be suggested to reduce the 33% number of welders who have a excess welding fume TLV. 7) Considering both 5) and 6) cases, first of all, the best welding current can be 200 Ampere to have a below 15% of welding fume excess probability for the welders who works in distance of 34-37cm. Secondly, to have a below 30% excess probability of welding fume TLV, the working distance must be over 38cm in 220 Ampere and 32cm in 200 Ampere. 8) To reduce the average exposure concentration of welding fume ($8.21{\pm}5.83mg/m^3$), the movable local exhaust system equipped with flexible hoods can be used.

Occupational Exposure of Semiconductor Workers to ELF Magnetic Fields (반도체 제조 근로자의 극저주파 자기장 노출 평가)

  • Objectives: To compare the exposure level of extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields among semiconductor workers, shipyard welders and office workers. Methods: To measure the ELF magnetic field concentration, EMDEX LITE (Enertech, USA) were used and monitored for eight hours continuously. Five companies handling the electric and magnetic field (EMF) source were investigated, which the exposure groups were classified into three groups: semiconductor workers, welders, and office workers. Welder group was chosen as a high exposed group and office group as a low exposed group. Results: The arithmetic mean (${\pm}SD$) and geometric mean (GSD) of personal exposure level of semiconductor workers were 0.73 (${\pm}1.33$) ${\mu}T$, 0.43 (2.88) ${\mu}T$, respectively. The ceiling value ranged between 0.18 and 123.2 ${\mu}T$. Welders were exposed high with the arithmetic mean value of 3.46 (${\pm}\;13.46$) ${\mu}T$ and geometric mean value of 0.45 (4.70) ${\mu}T$, respectively, and ceiling value range of 75.5~129.6 ${\mu}T$. The exposure levels of office workers were low compared to other exposed groups; the arithmetic mean 0.05 (${\pm}0.13$) ${\mu}T$, geometric mean 0.03 (2.38) ${\mu}T$ and ceiling value range 0.37~3.35 ${\mu}T$. This study revealed statistically significant differences of the mean ELF magnetic field exposure doses among three groups (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The average ELF magnetic field exposure doses of semiconductor workers were much higher than those of office workers in control group, but were lower than those of welders in high exposure group.

  • The use of flux cored arc welding(FCAW) process has grown dramatically since it has been developed because of the remarkable operating characteristics and the resulting weld properties. The feature that distinguishes the FCAW process from other arc welding processes is the enclosure of fluxing ingredients within a continuously fed tubular electrode. The benefits of FCAW process are the increased productivity due to continuous wire feeding, the metallurgical effects derived from the reactions with flux, and the shapes of weld bead formed by slag. However, FCAW process causes the problem in working environment because it generates much more fume than other welding processes. Recently, the welding fume became a hot issue in the field after some welders were diagnosed as manganese toxcosis and siderosis. This study was started to investigate the characteristics of welding fume and utilize the results from the investigation to protect the welders from welding fume. As a first step, the effect of welding conditions on the fume generation rate(FGR) were investigated during FCAW process with $CO_2$ shielding. The considered welding conditions were welding current, arc voltage, travel speed, contact tube to work distance, and torch angle. The results showed that FGR was affected by all of these factors.

  • Respiratory effects in full time welders include bronchitis, airway irritation, lung function changes, and lung fibrosis. Welder's pneumoconiosis has been generally determined to be benign and not associated with respiratory symptoms based on the absence of pulmonary function abnormalities in welders with marked radiographic abnormalities. Accordingly, to investigate pulmonary function changes during 60 days induced by welding-fume exposure, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to manual metal arc-stainless steel (MMA-SS) welding fumes with concentrations of 64.8$\pm$0.9 mg/$m^3$ (low dose) and 107.8 $\pm$ 2.6 mg/$m^3$ (high dose) total suspended particulates for 2 hr/day, 5 days/week in an inhalation chamber for 60 days. Pulmonary function was measured every week with whole body plethysmograph compensated (WBP Comp, SFT38116, Buxco Electronics, Sharon, CT). The rats exposed to the high dose of welding fumes exhibited statistically significant (p<0.05~0.01) body weight decrease as compared to the control whereas cell number increase of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) (total cell, macrophage, polymorphonuclear cell and lymphocyte) during the 60 days exposure period. And only tidal volume was significantly decreased in dosedependantly during 60 days of MMA-SS welding fume exposure. This pulmonary function change with inflammatory cell recruitment confirms the lung injury caused by the MMA-SS welding fume exposure.

A Study on the Development of Welding Clothes in Shipyards (조선소 용접복 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a questionnaire was compiled by conducting interviews and preliminary surveys, and then handed out to a total of 270 welders working in shipyards to investigate their opinions on welding clothes. By which investigation, it was intended to understand their dissatisfactions and issues with conventional welding clothes and then propose of such welding clothes as may offer better fit and suitability. A total of twenty welding suits were collected to find the locations and degrees of wear and tear. Due to too large differences in the locations and degrees of wear and tear among the clothes, the evaluation was focused on ten suits out of the twenty suits collected. The researcher’s subjective judgment was used to select the nineteen most severely damaged parts, which were then photographed in a uniform distance and evaluated by a group of experts in terms of the degree of damage in order to locate most severely damaged parts and select adequate materials for those parts in designing an experimental suit. Based on two above evaluations, the experimental welding suit was produced in consideration of the design, materials and patterns. A lab evaluation and a site evaluation were conducted to compare the experimental suit and other conventional suits, a lab evaluation and a field evaluation were performed.

  • According to the industrial development welding technology is necessitated to develop in the direction of full automation, high efficiency, energy saving, and full safety. In this study, thus, a simple holder ampere controller for welding systems is developed and applied to arc welders and its capability is examined and tested. The results are as follows: 1. It has a simple structure, since the primary AC power for the welder can be directly control led using a triac. 2. It can control the electric power strength in several steps as well as on and off easily, since a small-sized variable resistance is installed in the small controller on the welding holder. 3. In real field applications a welding system with this controller increases the working efficiency greatly compare to the conventional arc welders without the system, because the controller can control the ampere onsite far from the main power supply. 4. It can reduce the probability of the electrical mishap due to electrical leakage, since the electricity is disconnected as soon as the switch is off or welding person's hand is taken off from the welder after the work or for rest. 5. It can control the welding depth in the beginning and do the crater treatment well in the ending of welding, since it always supplies the relevent amount of electrical current. Therefore, it can improve the mechanical properties of the welding zone.

  • 플랜트, 가스용기 등의 압력용기 제작 및 스텐레스, 알미늄 등의 특수금속용접에서 TIG 용접은 매우 중요한 기술적 위치를 차지하고 있다. 이런 용접에서 현재까지는 국내에서 노동 집약적인 수동 TIG 용접이 적용되고 있으나 인건비의 상승, 3D 산업으로 인한 숙련자의 부족으로 자동화가 급속히 추진되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 10A 이하에서도 용접이 가능한 극 정밀 직류 TIG 펄스 용접기에 관한 연구결과를 다룬다.
