  • The welded defects are usually called user's unsatisfaction for appearance and functional usage. For checking these defects effectively without time loss, setup of weldability estimation system is an important for detecting whole specimen quality. In this study, after catching a rawdata on welded specimen profiles and treating vision processing with these data, the qualitative defects are estimated from getting these information by laser vision camera at first. At the same time, the weldability estimation for whole specimen is produced. For user friendly, the weldability estimation results are shown each profiles, final reports and visual graphics method. So, user can easily determined weldability. By applying these system to welding fabrication, these technologies are contribution to on-line setup of weldability estimation system.

  • Through welding fabrication, user can feel an surficaial and capable unsatisfaction because of welded defects, Generally speaking, these are called weld defects. For checking these defects effectively without time loss effectively, weldability estimation system setup isan urgent thing for detecting whole specimen quality. In this study, by laser vision camera, catching a rawdata on welded specimen profiles, treating vision processing with these data, qualititative defects are estimated from getting these information at first. At the same time, for detecting quantitative defects, whole specimen weldability estimation is pursued by multifeature pattern recognition, which is a kind of fuzzy pattern recognition. For user friendly, by weldability estimation results are shown each profiles, final reports and visual graphics method, user can easily determined weldability. • The ultrasonic guided wave-based technique has become one of the most promising methods in non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring, because of its advantages of large area inspection, evaluating inaccessible areas on the structure and high sensitivity to small damage. To further advance the development of damage detection technologies using ultrasonic guided waves for the inspection of welded components in structures, the transmission characteristics of the ultrasonic guided waves propagating through welded joints with various types of defects or damage in steel plates are studied and presented in this paper. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model considering the different material properties of the mild steel, high strength steel and austenitic stainless steel plates and their corresponding welded joints as well as the interaction condition of the steel plate and welded joint, is developed. The FE model is validated against analytical solutions and experimental results reported in the literature and is demonstrated to be capable of providing a reliable prediction on the features of ultrasonic guided wave propagating through steel plates with welded joints and interacting with defects. Mode conversion and scattering analysis of guided waves transmitted through the different types of weld defects in steel plates are performed by using the validated FE model. Parametric studies are undertaken to elucidate the effects of several basic parameters for various types of weld defects on the transmission performance of guided waves. The findings of this research can provide a better understanding of the transmission behaviour of ultrasonic guided waves propagating through welded joints with defects. The method could be used for improving the performance of guided wave damage detection methods.

  • In this paper, laser vision sensor is used to detect some defects any $co_{2}$ welded specimen in hardware. But, as the best expression of defects of welded specimen, the concept of segment splitting method and mean distance are introduced in software. The developed GUI software is used for deriding whether any welded specimen makes as proper shape or detects in real time. The criteria are based upon ISO 5817 as limits of imperfections in metallic fusion welds.

  • The assessments of weld defects by fracture mechanics are performed for design of welded Joints. In general, butt, T-type, and L-type welded joint are useful for welding structure. When linear weld defects are in welded joint, stress intensity factors for each joints are calculated by finite element method. Analysis results are shown for the fracture modes and characteristics of joint types. And they are founded for the weaken order of welded joints being T-type, butt, L-type.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis results regarding the effects of an incomplete penetration defect on the fatigue lives of socket welded pipes. For the experiment, four-point bending fatigue tests with various defect geometries (defect depth and circumferential length) were performed, and test results are presented in terms of stress-life data. The results showed that for circumferentially short defects, the fatigue life tends to increase with increasing crack depth, but for longer defects, the trend becomes the opposite. Finite element analysis showed that for short defects, the maximum principal stress decreases with increases in crack depth. For a longer defect, the opposite trend was found. Furthermore, the maximum principal stress tends to increase with an increase in defect length regardless of the defect depth.

  • Fatigue failure modes of load-carrying cruciform weld joints are dependent on the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiation and propagation from the weld toe or the weld root. In this study, constant amplitude fatigue tests on load-carrying fillet welded specimen carried out, and fatigue strengths were evaluated. Also, an attempt is made to develop a new analytical model with more accuracy to predict the fatigue crack propagation life of fillet welded cruciform joints of SWS 490B steels containing lack of penetration defects. From the result of this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, containing lack of penetration defects are found to be affected by the weld geometry, stress range and microstructures of the weld zone.

  • It was known that the fracture incidences of offshore structure were mostly originated from the surface defects. Especially, in the case of the welded structures, since the welded region has some defects and incomplete beads which are apt to behave like the surface cracks, it has been necessary to evaluate the environmental effects on crack growth at HAZ for the design crack growth behaviour at multi-pall HAZ for SWS41 steel under free corrosion and cathodic protection(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) conditions. The results are summarized as follows ; (1) Crack growth rate of the as weld in air was faster than that of the parent and PWHT specimens over all .DELTA.K rang. (2) In free corrosion test, surface crack growth rate of the as welded was decreased in comparison with that of the parents. (3) In fatigue test under cathodic protection, cathodic electric potential(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) for the SWS41 steel parent was effective, while for the as welded ineffective. (4) There was a tendency that the exponent(m) of the Paris' equation was decreased in order of microhardness magnititude in air and under cathodic protection conditions and vise versa in free corrosion. (5) Fracture surface has dimples and ductile striations in air test, but transgranular cracks and brittle striations under cathodic protection test.

  • Weldability of Friction Stir Welded(FSW) AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy sheet with 4m thick was evaluated by changing welding speed. The sound welding conditions mainly depended on the suffiicient welding heat input during the process. The insufficient heat input resulted in the void like defect in the weld zone. Higher welding speed caused a larger inner void or lack of bonding. The defects were distributed at the stir zone or the transition region between stir zone and thermo-mechanical affected zone (UE). The size of defects slightly increased with increasing welding speed. These defects had a great effect on the joint strength of weld zone. The weld zone was composed of stir zone, TMAZ and heat affected zone. The stir zone was cosisted of fine recrystallized structure with $5-8\mu\textrm{m}$ in the mean grain size. The hardness of weld zone was near the 60HV, which was slightly lower than that of base metal. The maximum joint strength was about 219MPa that was 75% of that of base metal and the yield strength was also lower than that of base metal partly due to the existance of defects.
