Top-down construction is a construction technique in which pit excavation and structure construction are conducted simultaneously. Reducing construction time and minimizing noise and vibration which affect neighboring structures, the technique is widely employed in constructing downtown structures. While H-steel columns have been commonly used as core columns, concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns are at the center of attention because the latter have less axial directionality and greater cross-sectional efficiency than the former. When compared with circular CFT columns, square CFT columns are more easily connected to the floor structure and the area of percussion rotary drilling (PRD) is smaller. For this reason, square CFT columns are used as core columns of concrete encased and filled square (CET) columns in underground floors. However, studies on the structural behavior and concrete stress transfer of CET columns have not been conducted. Since concrete is cast according to construction sequence, checking the stress of concrete inside the core columns and the stress of covering concrete is essential. This paper presents the results of structural tests and analyses conducted to evaluate the usability and safety of CET columns in top-down construction where CFT columns are used as core columns. Parameters in the tests are loading condition, concrete strength and covering depth. The compressive load capacity and failure behavior of specimens are evaluated. In addition, 2 cases of field application of CET columns in underground floors are analyzed.
Volcanic rocks including rhyolitic tuff, rhyolite and welded tuff in the Bupyeong silver mine area form a topographic circular structure known as a resurgent caldera. Granitic rocks are emplaced inside and outside area of the circular structure. K-Ar dating and Nd-Sr isotope studies were carried out to invesitigate the origin and petrogenetic evolution of the rhyolitic and granitic magma in the Bupeong silver mine area. Whole rock K-Ar age ranges from 208 to 131 Ma for rhyolitic rocks. Radiometric ages for the granitic rocks are 167.6 Ma for pink feldspar biotite granite from inside granitic pluton of the circular volcanic body, 178.8 Ma for the Kimpo hornblende biotite granite and 111.8 Ma for the Songdo foliated granite from outside granitic plutons of the volcanic body. The radiometric age data indicates that the volcanic activities which are partly overlapped by granite plutonic activities in the Bupyeong mine area had recorded early Jurassic and early Cretaceous in age. Initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the rhyolitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.710~0.719 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5118) are similar to those of granitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.709~0.716 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5116) from inside granite stock. This means that similar source materials of felsic magma responsibles for the Bupyeong volcanic rocks and inside plutonic rocks. Based on the Nd and Sr isotopic compositions, rhyolitic and granitic magmas in the Bupyeong area originated from the partial melting of the old continental crust which has Nd model age ranging from 1500 to 2900 Ma. This is analogous to those of the other Jurassic granitoids in South Korea.
In the fabrication of steel bridges, blast cleaning prior to painting is carried out on the steel members to clean the forged surface and to increase the adhesive property of the applied painting systems. The effect of blast cleaning on the fatigue strength improvement of the weld joints, however, is not clear. In this study, Almen strips and steel specimens were blast-treated, conforming to ten types of blast-cleaning conditions deducted from the blast-cleaning conditions of seven steel structure fabrication companies. The arc height, roughness, hardness, and compressive residual stress were measured before and after the implementation of the ten blast-cleaning methods, and the relationship between the blast conditions and the measured values was studied. The geometry of the weld toe and the compressive residual stress near the weld toe were also measured before and after the blast cleaning of the butt-welded joints, and fatigue tests were carried out on the butt weld joints. The test results showed that blast cleaning significantly increases the fatigue strength and limit.
Asymmetric Slimflor Beam had been unveiled with Thor beam (Hat beam) in Sweden since the late 1970s and had been developed by British Steen and SCI. In the major advanced countries in Europe after the early 1990s have interested in and developed this method, it has been concrened as the absence of hot-rolled section steel in the United Kingdom and welded of asymmetric section steel in Finland in the 2000s. It can be increase total floor area about 10%, save the interior and exterior materials, reduce the waste through reduction of the floor height. And it has more excellent fire resistance performance because less exposed than a regular composite steel beam in fire. This study is purpose that, a fire resistance performance of the Asymmetric Slimflor Beam in fire, it compared the temperature range with deflection of structure by fire behavior and load ratio of structure through change the shape of the steel cross-section in standard fire condition.
This study aimed to assess the feasibility on the wide and long 9%Ni steel plate for use in the LNG storage inner tank shell. First, 5-m-wide and 15-m-long 9%Ni steel plates were test manufactured from a steel mill and specimens taken from the plates were tested for strength, toughness, and flatness to verify their performance based on international standards and design specifications. Second, plates with a thickness of 10 mm and 25 mm, a width of 4.8~5.0 m, and a length of 15 m were test fabricated by subjecting to pretreatment, beveling, and roll bending resulting in a final width of 4.5~4.8 m and a length of 14.8m with fabrication errors identical to conventional plates. Third, welded specimens obtained via shield metal arc welding used for vertical welding of inner tank shell and submerged arc welding used for horizontal welding were also tested for strength, toughness and ductility. Fourth, verification of shell plate material and fabrication was followed by test erection using two 25-mm-thick, 4.5-m-wide and 14.8-m-long 9%Ni steel plates. No undesirable welding failure or deformation was found. Finally, parametric design using wide and long 9%Ni steel plates was carried out, and a simplified design method to determine the plate thickness along the shell height was proposed. The cost analysis based on the parametric design resulted in about 2% increase of steel weight; however, the construction cost was reduced about 6% due to large reduction in welding work.

Recently, modular system are popular in construction fields, and they are increasing their marcket share. To compare modular units, bolting and welding are most popular methods. However, the temperature around a welded part might be over than 1,300$^{\circ}C and the composite member might be exposed tp the direct welding heat about 20,000$^{\circ}C. This high welding heat makes decrease of the concrete strength. If the concrete strength seriously decreases, it can affect the behavior and safty of a structure. On this study, To prevent of concrete strength decreases by welding heat, we suggested method of to insert between steel and concrete.

The design of railroad bridges differs from road bridges because of the interface between track structure and bridge structure. The track generally consists of Continuous Welded Rail(CWR) which is fixed by fasteners to the sleepers embedded in the ballast. The ballast provides the interface between the track structure and the bridge structure. Large longitudinal forces can develop from the temperature variation in rail and bridge structure. These longitudinal forces are specially important for long bridges because the bridge layout for span length, pier dimensions and arrangement and type of bearings can be governed by these forces. This report provides a comparison of longitudinal track forces determined by analysis and actual measured track forces. In recent practice the longitudinal track force for European railways is analyzed using a finite element analysis method. This method is very time-consuming and requires the detail design of the bridge to be complete. Redesign is required if the design criteria for longitudinal track forces are not satisfied. There is a need to develop a simple analysis method considering the large number of bridge structures and a relatively short design time on the Korean High Speed Rail Project. The analysis results presented herein, based on a simplified analysis, show good agreement with those obtained by finite element analysis, as well as with those measured on an actual track. The proposed analysis method is particularly useful for the preliminary design of bridge structures.

Power generating unit structures are designed and built to meet standard to secure its safety for expected life time. As the structures have been exposed to combined environment, degradation of structure material is accelerated and it can cause unexpected damage; evaluating precise mechanical properties of weak site like welded area is an essential research area as it is directly connected to safety issues. Existing measuring technique like tensile test requires specific size in testing specimen yet it is destructive method which is hard to apply on running structures. To overcome above mentioned limitation, IIT is getting limelight as it is non-destructive and simple method. In this study, latest technique is introduced to evaluate tensile property and residual stress by analyzing stress field occurs under the indenter while IIT is performed. Test on welded area, the weak site of nuclear structures have been practiced and confirmed that IIT can be usefully applied to evaluate integrity in industry.

While the recent high demand for mega-tall buildings has led to the development of high-performance and high-strength steels, the requirements for architectural-structure-performance steel have been raised as engineers recognize the potential damage that an earthquake can wreak on a tall building. A 600MPa-class steel has emerged to meet such need, and many studies are currently exploring its practical applications on civil engineering works and mega-tall buildings. The available data on the horizontal-force behaviors of structures built with such new steel, however, are still insufficient. There is an urgent need to look into its design data, especially its toughness, and to compare the plastic strain ratios of column-to-beam connections using high-strength steel and regular steel. One of the first studies on the behavior of a column-to-beam connection using 600MPa-class steel (SM570 TMC), this thesis analyzes such steel's structural performance by conducting a structural test on seismic resistance on a full-scale column-to-beam welded connection with non-scallop and recommended-scallop details. Compared with the previous studies on SM490, this thesis evaluates the weldability of SM570 TMC and presents the latter's seismic design data for use in testing its practical application.
CWR (continuous welded rail) tracks on high-speed railway bridges have much more complicated axial force distributions caused by track-bridge interaction than those behaviors on embankments, and additional problems caused by track-structure interaction with the axial force of the CWR. In order to analyze and limit other physical phenomena caused by track-bridge interaction, a design guideline (KR C-08080, longitudinal track-bridge interaction analysis) is used when designing CWR track on bridges. Domestic analysis and design methods for track-bridge interaction follow the UIC 774-3R, and they suggest conservative methods and deterministic properties. Recently, many studies analyzing the methods of track-bridge interaction considering the loading history are being carried out; however, there has been insufficient studies of the variation of the resistance properties with a consideration of the actual loading history. In this study, the performances of rail fastening systems used for concrete track on bridges were tested and analyzed while considering the loading history. For this purpose, longitudinal and vertical loading combinations, applied in order to simulate the practical conditions and resistance characteristics (stiffness and elastic limit displacement), are analyzed through the experimental results. Also, a comparison study was conducted with the properties in the KR Code.
