The existence of residual stress in the circumferential butt welded pipes is one of the most important problems concerning stress corrosion cracking in service. In this paper, the residual stress distributions in three kinds of circumferential butt welded pipes were measured by the hole drilling strain gage method and calculation using finite element method is performed and its results are compared with the experiments. At the inner surface of the pipe region near the center line of welding is under high tensile residual stress. However, as the distance from the center line of welding increases, the tensile component decreases and finally becomes compressive residual stress at region far away from the center line of welding. The longitudinal residual stress at the outer surface is compressive regardless of the diameter of pipe and the circumferential stress is changed rom compressive to tensile as pipe diameter increases. The results also demonstrate that the residual stress is mainly caused by self restraint bending force in the pipe welding.
Welding defects affect the performance of welded pipe joints. In this study, a three point bend test of welded steel and medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipe joints with defects of various defect locations and defect materials was studied using the finite element method. The defect was assumed to be located at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock or 6 o'clock direction. The results showed that pipes failed more easily on the compression side due to stress or local buckling. The air defect was more dangerous than the steel defect if the defect was located in the compression side; otherwise, the defect material effect on the integrity of pipes was ignorable. It is argued that the integrity of pipes with defects in the compression side is weaker than that in other regions, and the defect should be located in the compression side or the 12 o'clock position in the three point bend test to maximize the effect of defect existence on the pipe structural integrity.

The purpose of this study is to examine the fracture toughness of the welded pipe from the viewpoint of FATT for the S38 and S42 steels used widely as the pipe material. Post weld heat treatment(PW HT) was carried out like following conditions: temperature of 67$0^{\circ}C$, I hour of holding time and cooling in furnace. Fracture toughness was obtained by measuring the crack opening displacement(COD) of the notched specimens over the range of temperature from -14$0^{\circ}C$ to -$25^{\circ}C$. Hardness values at fusion line near around were the highest and the microstructures at welded zone were coarsened. Regardless of the pipe materials, COD and temperature curves of the as-welds were moved toward higher temperature compared with those of the parents. However, COD and temperature curves of the PWHT specimens were positioned at lower temperature compared with those of the as-welds. The more heat input causes to decrease the COD values at the constant temperature. It was verified through the recrystallization treatment that PWHT was attributed to move toward lower temperature region considerably due to the improved plastic deformation at the same applied COD value of 0.3mm and softening effect. In case of the weldment of S38 steel, cleavage fracture was observed at -105$^{\circ}C$ unlike the structural steels, in which brittle fracture mode was generally shown at - 196$^{\circ}C$.
This study is to compare the welding quality of API 5L-X65 Steel- pipe's for natural gas transmission piping applied by SAW at shop and by GTAW-SMAW at site. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) Tensile strength of the welded zone by SAW(611.5 MPa) and by GTAW-SMAW(608.6 MPa) was maintained greater than that of the base metal(583.5 MPa). 2) Hardness of the welded zone and HAZ by SAW(Hv 194.8) & GTAW-SMAW (Hv 196.1) was slightly increased above that of the base metal (Hv 168.8), but less than the maximum allowable hardness(Hv 248). 3) Impact value of the welded zone by SAW(126.8 J) & GTAW-SMAW(88 J) became lower than that of the base metal(282.5 J), but was above the requirement of API 5L(68J). 4) Microscopic structure of the welded zone and HAZ by both SAW & GTAW-SMAW became fine-grained.

AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel is widely used for LNG pipes for LNG transmission thanks to its good metallurgical and mechanical properties. In the present research, impact toughness of a gas tungsten arc welded AISI 304 stainless steel pipe was evaluated between room and liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$) test temperatures. In addition, a comparative study was made of the fracture behavior of FCC crystal structured stainless steel weldments and BCC crystal structured mild steels(A-grade and SS400). The results showed a slight decrease in the impact energy of the AISI 304 base metal, heat affected zone(HAZ), and welded zone with decreasing test temperature. In addition, the welded metal has the highest absorbed impact energy, followed by HAZ and the base metal.
This study aimed to develop the heat treating equipment which could produce austenitic stainless steel welded pipes & tubes maintaining its peculiar brightness even after heat treatment. The results of this study are as follows:- Development of 8.5kHz, 150kw bright annealing system was achieved. - Bright annealing of austenitic stainless steel welded pipes & tubes was performed by the developed pilot-system through this study and heat-treatment effects were quite successful in viewpoint of surface brightness, hardness distribution, microstructure, removal of residual stress, strength and corrosion resistance.
It is required for the steel materials used in the sour environment to have sufficient resistance to hydrogen induced cracking(HIC). For line pipe steels, HIC resistance could be varied during pipe making process due to the large plastic deformation applied in the thick-wall pipe. In order to figure out such effect, HIC tests were performed not only in the plate condition but in the pipe condition and their results were compared in terms of cracking ratio. Test results demonstrated a detrimental effect of plastic deformation to HIC resulting in a substantial increase in the cracking ratio after pipe forming process. All of the cracks found in the pipe material were located in the outer layer of pipe where the tensile strain was resulted during pipe forming stage. In order to understand the HIC resistance of the pipe but in the plate condition, it was suggested to pre-strain the plate to some extent before the HIC test.
This paper presents finite element (FE) analyses to clarify the effects of external pressure on the residual stresses in a girth-welded steel pipe. At first, FE simulation of the girth welding process is carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermo-mechanical FE formulation. Then, 3-D elastic-plastic FE analyses incorporating the residual stresses and plastic strains obtained from the preceding FE simulation are performed to investigate the residual stress behavior in the girth-welded pipe under external pressure. The FE analysis results show that the hoop compressive stresses induced by the external pressure significantly alter the hoop residual stresses in the course of the mechanical loading.
