  • Reliability evaluation of welded structures by mechanical testing of weld heat-affected zones (HAZs) has become general practice throughout the world. HAZs of steel welded Joints show a gradient of microstructure from the fusion line to the unaffected base metal. This study is concerned a correlation between the microstructural change and the fracture characteristics in HAZs of both seam and girth welds of API 5L X65 pipeline steel, which is generally used for natural gas transmission pipelines in Korea. The focus in this study is the investigation of macroscopic fracture behavior of the various regions within HAZ. Changes in microstructure and toughness were observed using actual HAZ specimens. To evaluate the macroscopic toughness of actual HAZ, Charpy V-notch impact test and CTOD test were performed.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of crack orientation on fatigue crack growth behavior in friction stir welded (FSWed) Al 7075-T651. Fatigue crack growth testing was conducted on compact tension (CT) specimens machined from the friction stir welds and the base metal under constant stress intensity factor range control. Tests were performed with the crack propagating nominally perpendicular to the weld line (termed the TL specimen) and the crack propagating in a parallel direction of the weld line (termed the LT specimen), and with three different constant stress intensity factor ranges. Both these specimen orientations were found to have a considerable effect on the fatigue crack growth behavior. Paris's law was adopted for the analysis of experimental results; the exponent m of the WM-LT specimen was determined to be 3.56, which was the largest value in this experimental conditions.

  • The fatigue life of ship structure under cyclic loading condition is made up of crack initiation and propagation stages. For a welding member in ship structure, the fatigue crack propagation life is more important than the fatigue crack initiation life. To calculate precisely the fatigue crack propagation life at the critical welding location, the knowledge of the residual stress sensitivity on the fatigue strength is necessary. In this study, thermo elastic-plastic analysis was conducted in order to examine the effect of residual stress on the fatigue crack propagation life. Also the fatigue crack propagation lives considering residual stress were calculated using fatigue crack growth code, AFGROW, on the basis of fracture mechanics. AFGROW is widely used for fatigue crack growth predictions under constant and variable amplitude loading. The reliability of AFGROW on the fatigue of ship structure was confirmed by the comparison of the estimated results with the fatigue propagation test results.

  • Half-P.C. slab system is the composite structural system which utilizes precast concrete for lower portion and cast in situ concrete for upper portion slab. When the composite slab using Half P.C. slab is deformed by flexural moment, horizontal shear happened at the interface between Half P.C. slab and topping concrete. To resist horizontal shear strength a scratch method has tried. To determine ultimate interface shear strength, shear stress, and shear coefficient, high and normal strength concrete are used for topping concrete. Major variables are compressive strength of topping concrete with or without shear reinforcement, quantitative roughness of the P.C. :surface and tie or untie of the stud with welded deformed wire fabric in the P.C. member. The Icross sectional area on joints is 3,200 $cm^2$ in all specimens. Test results showed that shear stress increased, as the depth of the quantitative roughness increased. The horizontal shear strength could be resisted with safe by the quantitative roughness without shear tie. A shear coefficient determinant equation is proposed such that K = 0.025918 + 0.0068894$\cdot$R – 0.000182354${\cdot}R^2$

  • The fabrication of steel structural members always involves welding process such as flux cored arc welding. Therefore, for the application of structural steels to cold regions, it is a prerequisite to clarify the service temperature of the welded joints in order to ensure the structural integrity of the welded parts. In this study, the Charpy impact test was conducted to evaluate the service temperature of structural steel weld. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The service temperatures of the weld metal, HAZ (heat affected zone) and base metal were derived by the absorbed energy and the impact test requirements; thus the applicability of the structural steels to cold regions was discussed in detail.

  • Al-Si coated boron steel and Zn coated DP steel plates were laser-welded to manufacture a Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) for a car body frame. Hot-stamping heat treatment ($900^{\circ}C$, 5 min) was applied to the TWB weld, and the microstructural change and transformation mechanism were investigated in the Al-rich area near the bond line of the Al-Si coated steel side. There was Al-rich area with a single phase, $Fe_3(Al,Si)$, which was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe$ (Ferrite) after the heat treatment. It could be explained that the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ phase was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe$ during heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 min and the resultant ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase was not transformed by rapid cooling. Before the heat treatment, the microstructures around the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ phase consisted of martensite, bainite and ${\alpha}-Fe$ while they were transformed to martensite and ${\delta}-Fe$ after the heat treatment. Due to the heat treatment, Al was diffused to the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ and this resulted in an increase of Al content to 0.7 wt% around the Al-rich area. If the weld was held at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 min it was transformed to a mixture of austenite (${\gamma}$) and ${\delta}-Fe$, and only ${\gamma}$ was transformed to the martensite by water cooling while the ${\delta}-Fe$ was remained unchanged.

  • An experimental study on the welding part of a heat transfer plate that constitutes the lightweight and high efficiency recuperator is presented in this paper. In particular, to find out the service life of the welded part, fatigue characteristics were determined through experiments. Experiments were carried out on two materials (STS347, AL20-25 + nb), which are selected as the material of the recuperator; further, the specimens were manufactured through the methods used for actual fabrication and the standards recommended by ASTM. To evaluate the mechanical properties of the specimens at room and high temperature, MTS-810 was used in a high-temperature furnace. The tensile test was carried out at room and high temperatures for each specimen. The fatigue test was carried out by setting the load ratio corresponding to 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10% of the tensile strength at the stress ratio of 0.1. Finally, the fatigue life characteristics obtained by the experiment were compared with the stresses owing to the load generated in the operating conditions of the recuperator, and the lifetime of the welds was evaluated to prepare for the operation time required by the UAV.

  • In the study herein, the fatigue test was conducted on the fillet welds of the load carrying cruciform joint, which is frequently used in the steel structures such as bridges, ships, etc. In addition, the fatigue strength was analyzed with respect to the different post-weld treatment. The treatment methods used include Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing, and Weld Profiling. The fatigue test was under constant amplitude with repeated load for these test specimens. In the load carrying full penetration fillet welded joints, regardless the conduction of the post-weld treatment or not, they all secured the fatigue strength of category "F", which exceeds the fatigue design specifications of BS Code. In the comparison of the fatigue strength upon the post-weld treatment, the fatigue strength tends to increase according to the order: Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing, and Weld Profiling.

  • This study proposes improved welding tools for magnesium alloys. Two types of tools were used for friction stir welding (FSW). The effect of the welding tools on the FSW joints was investigated with a fixed welding speed of 200mm/min and various rotation speeds of 400 to 800 rpm. After FSW, the joints were cross-sectioned perpendicular to the welding direction to investigate the defects. A tensile test and Vickers hardness test were conducted to identity the mechanical properties of the joints. Defects were observed when the rotation speed was 400 rpm, regardless of the welding tool, and the amount of defects tended to decrease with increases in rotational speed. Defect-free welds were obtained when the rotation speed was 800 rpm. The best weld quality was acquired using the C type welding tool. The rotation speed of 800 rpm and welding speed of 200 mm/min produced the best joining properties. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the welded region were 90.0%, 69.1%, and 83.2% those of the base metal, respectively.

  • With the increase in the demand for high-rise buildings, the use of high-strength steel has likewise increased. Thus, it has become more necessary to study the resistance force of the high-strength hollow structural section (HSS) joint of 600MPa. Additionally, the current design equation in Korea limits maximum yield stress at 360MPa in the case of HSS. In other words, since the current specification does not apply to HSS of 600MPa, this study aims to investigate the applicability of design equations as well as examine the behavior of the connection through the experiment and finite element analysis (FEA) of the plate-tube connection of 600MPa. In particular, this paper presents the behavior of joints with the gusset plates welded in the longitudinal direction of the circular hollow section (CHS) when the joints are subjected to lateral force. Comparing design equations with the results of FEA and the test, existing design equations are underestimated to be 56~79% in the case of high-strength materials.
